Title: The Gell Family
Post by: Scott Thompson on Friday 01 February 08 23:01 GMT (UK)
It's me again!
I am looking for information on my great grandmother Mary Ann Gell or the Gell family.
She was born sometime in the 1870's or early 1880's in either Stockton or
West Hartlepool (as it was then). I have had little luck, made worst by the
confusion with the name Gill. She married Edward Hill, a sailor/sailmaker from
either Stockton or West Hartlepool. I have the diary he kept on one of his voyages
and his, rather unfortunately named Seaman's Discharge Certificate.
Can anyone help?

Saw that birth, Isobel, discounted it at first as the 1901 census said Hartlepool, 1891 makes it clear!

Thank you very much for all that. That is all very amazing stuff!
You both have helped tremendously.
Is there any way of linking my grandmother Olive May Hill born in 1903-1904
to Edward and Mary Ann?

Post by: Ecneps on Saturday 02 February 08 09:05 GMT (UK)
Hi Scott,

As she was born after the 1901 census, you would need to get her birth certificate which would show her parents.
If you look on www.middlesbrough-indexes.co.uk you can order it through the local register office by clicking on the reference number next to the name
I found a Mary O Hill b 1903 Hartlepool, and two Olive M Hills born 1899 and 1906 Stockton.. you could check with the register office if you have the right one before you buy it by asking them to check the parents first

Would you like earlier census for Edward Wilson Hill & his parents?

Hello Barbara
Thanks for all your help. I have been able to relay all your finds back to my aunt, Olive's daughter. She can
dimly remember some of the details and even has a photo of the Gell's house in Holme. I would love to have
any further info on the Hills, in particular Emily Jane Wise. No one knew of a Kent connection.
Thanks once again.

Thank you very much for that because it sets the correct starting point.
There was a lot of uncertainty in the family about some of these dates, which
I guess is a reoccurring theme in this business. My grandfather Fred was raised
a Catholic because of his mother's side (Atkinson) and this caused problems on that
hot day in August 1934.
Just one more small question - what does inst stand for?
Thanks again for your diligent detective work.
Yours
Scott :)

'inst' means of this month.
'ult' means of last month.
there is a b+w picture of the 1934 wedding in the paper BUT, it is doubtful whether you would get a clear copy of it. there are no catholic church frecords available for my perusal.

Hello. I'm back!
Is there a marriage cert for Ralph and Mary Hill parents of Edward Wilson Hill.
Or one for Robert and Sarah Gell, parents of Mary Ann Gell?

Hello! It's me again.
Can anybody help me with the following:
Ralph Gell's death cert
Robert Gell/Ann Gell marriage cert
Hannah Gell's death cert
Robert Gell's death cert
Ann Gell's death cert
Is Ralph Gell on the 1851 census?
It would be a great help in wrapping up this side of the tree.
Thanks Scott

Hi

There is a partially transcribed website http://freebmd.rootsweb.com which people use to lookup BMD's - it's very useful and it's free

There is also the IGI at www.familysearch.org

If the info you are looking for is not on either of those websites you will need to search the full GRO index  which is available at your nearest main library if you live in the UK.  It can also be searched online if you have an Ancestry subscription or at www.findmypast.com which is a paysite

Also - I don't know whether you are aware of this but most libraries now have free Ancestry access which is very useful as it enables you to make a note of all the info you need and then (hopefully)  get all the loose ends tied up in one visit

Hi Scott !

I just wanted to say ..... you're a very lucky person ...... ( wish I had  research in Durham !!  ;D ;D ;D ) it's lovely to see ... when somebody goes out of their way to help !! hpool didn't get all that information on line ... sometimes you have to physically go to the records office and look up the information .... it can be very time consuming going through all those books .... though in the case of Rootschatters - ( the "girls" with their census ! ) we get much pleasure knocking somebody's socks off with the information we find .... nearly as much as if it were our own !!

Enjoy your family !

Annie  :)

Don't I know it!!
The information has been flowing fast and furious. At times I have barely been able to keep up with it.
I would like to thank hpool and the Rootchatters and anyone else who took the time to help me out. This has
inspired loads of of my relatives to get involved and I've found a couple of long lost family as well!
Rootchatters...I like that.
Thank you all again!

Hello again.
Could someone please check to see what William and Mary Schofield were up to in 1851, 1861 and 1871?
I would also like to find out what Ann Gell, Robert's wife was doing in 1891 and 1901. In 1881 she is down as a 48 year old charwoman, living with my great grandmother (aged 10) in Holme.
Any help would be great.

1911 look-ups are not allowed for copyright reasons. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,355485.0.html

You can find out quite a lot about the family by careful use of the advanced search features. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,355239.0.html

In any event, the 1911 is pay-per-view for everyone - it is not available on any of the subscription sites. So anyone doing a look-up for you would have to pay for it!
