I have a relative in govan in 1861, 71 and 1881 as a coal miner.
i've looked on old maps and i can't see a coal mine  ??? it seems odd there would be one there.

could anyone point me in the right direction :)

their address was burnbank row, william gemmell born crawfordjohn.

 thanks, caroline

Do you mean Govan parish or Govan burgh?
If it was Govan parish it may well be north of the Clyde.  Perhaps there were mines or collieries in Anniesland or somewhere?
-
There was extensive coal mining in different areas around Govan - Craigton, Drumoyne  & Nitshill were just some of them

				sorry falkryn,

 i hit post too quckly!

in 1855 they actually lived in colliery houses, govan hill.

Govanhill was a major area for mining and even today is one of those areas where people buying houses are urged to have a mine survey carried out

Govanhill started out  as a miners village before developing into a community in its own right. There is also "Little Govan" which no longer exists but which was a major source of coal.

				thanks falkryn

that link is interesting!  I've just realised that his wife was called jane RAE (it says the rae family owned a lot in that area)  I wonder......
-
Seems the Govan colliery was a bit of a magnet for miners from the Leadhills area, I have Stewarts and Gordons move to Govan from Leadhills/Crawford area.

The book 'Gorbals an Illustrated History' has 2 excellent detailed maps of the area in 1858 and 1910. The 1858 shows 'Burnbank' on the Rutherglen Road (where  William lived in 1881) at Polmadie Burn and a short walk from Govan Colliery.  Burnbank was roughly just west of where Shawfield Stadium is today.

I don't know where you are but you can get it from your library if you're in Glasgow.

				Hello,

I see you are researching William Gemmell in Burnbank Row, Rutherglen. I have some info on the family if you are interested but you may already have it.
-
Poppysmum,  I have Rae folk in Burnbank Row, off Rutherglen Road, Little Govan.  This was quite a bit east of Govan-proper. They were mostly coal miners. I have Rae folk buried in the Southern Necropolis and Burnbank Row was, I believe, in this area.

The William Gemmell (coal miner) in my tree married Jane Drummond in 1876. His parents were David Gemmell & Jane Rae.

-
I also see that William Gemmell's sister, Jane, married William Rae. She was a millworker and also lived in Burnbank Row before and after she was married. Her husband was a coal miner too.
