Hi
I am looking to track down the birth details and parents of my gg grandmother Christina Cameron. I think she was born c1863 but cant seem to find any records. From the certificate to her 2nd marriage in 1907 her parents are listed as Allan Cameron and Christina Cameron ms Cameron, however, on her death certificate in 1934 her parents are listed as Allan Cameron and Janet Cameron ms (?) Whitet (?).
Christina had an illegitimate daughter, Annie, to William Scott then married James McGimpsey (i can find no record of this marriage). He died in 1902 and she married William Middleton in 1907.
Her father is described as a steelworker/ironworker and Christina's occupation is detailed throughout all the certificates as a farm servant.
Can anyone help me track her down?
Thanks
Tracey

Hi Tracey,
Going by the details you have for Christina, this may be her birth?
Christina Cameron
Birth: 9th October 1862 Dalziel, Lanarkshire
Parents: Allan Cameron and Janet Whitehead (married 1841)
This is the 1871 census for them, and Allan's occupation matches pretty well!
Address: 169 - 171 Queen St, Dalziel, Lanarkshire
Allan Cameron, m, head, 48, farmer lab in iron works, Fort William, Invernesshire
Janet W ", f, wife, 48, -, Dunblane, Perth
Alexander ", m, son, 20, -, Alloel (?), Perth
Margaret ", f, dau., 16, -, Motherwell, Lanarkshire
Allan ", m, son, 14, -, Motherwell, Lanarkshire
Hugh ", m, son, 12, -, Motherwell, Lanarkshire
Christina ", f, dau., 9, -, Motherwell, Lanarkshire

WOW! ;D
So quick! Yes it seems to match....guess i've got a lot more to go on. I can't thank you enough! This has stumped us for soooo long.
Thanks again

Ok...I now have a huge family link to Dunblane via Christina's mother Janet Whitehead. I have spent the last 2 days searching for Janet and Allan's death certificates but with no luck. I assume that they did not move back to where they came from so they must still be in Lanarkshire?
Help!

Hi TL
I think this is a possibility for Janet W's death, with her name registered as Jane (a common variant for Janet/Jean/jessie etc.):
1875 WHITEHEAD JANE CAMERON F 53 DALZIEL /LANARK 639/00 0048
Regards.
Monica :)

I also think there is a possibility that Allan may have remarried following the death of Janet (to be confirmed!): From the 1881 census:
Allan Cameron 53, Iron Works Labourer, b. Fort William, Invernesshire
Sarah Cameron 42, wife, b. Fort William, Invernesshire
Address: 15 St Vincent Place, Dalziel

The only entry I can see that fits for Allan in 1891 (if it is him) is this one:
Elizabeth Darling 41, head, laundress, b. Edinburgh
Allan Cameron 65, brother, Soda Water Bottler Unempld, b. Fort William
Margaret Cameron 63, sister, laundress, b. Fort William
Address: 198 Mowat Place, Edinburgh St Cuthberts
And maybe a death:
1899 CAMERON ALLAN 74 CANONGATE EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/03 0867
If you know the name of Allan's siblings, maybe the names in Edinburgh in 1891 will connect.
Regards.

Thanks for both replies Monica
I have virtually nothing on Allan before his marriage to Janet Whitehead in 1841 in Dunblane. He is aged 19 then so it would put his birth at c.1822/3. I have seriously struggled with finding his birth in Fort William, possibly Kilmallie parish. I have spent a fortune on SP credits lol.
I have done a search for allan cameron death records for scotland from 1875 to 1920 and there are none in the Motherwell area. Unless he moved back to Perthshire or into Glasgow or even emigrated....i am lost!
Can anyone help?

You need to try to narrow down the dates for Allan Cameron's death. Daughter Christina's re-marriage in 1907 should show on the cert whether her father Allan was alive or deceased. Also I think I found her first marriage entry:
1893 MEGEMCEY JAMES CAMERON CHRISTINA DALZIEL /LANARK 639/00 0039
The Al(l)an Cameron I showed living with siblings in 1891 is the only one showing a Fort William birth place on the transcripted index. Let me know how you get on :)

:D Tracey, this is your Allan:
1898 CAMERON ALLAN 70 DENNISTOUN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/03 0603
Regards.

Allan and 2nd wife Sarah in 1891. No wonder I couldn't find him, he was transcribed as Allon ::)
Allon Cameron 62, General Labourer, b. Killmaley, Invernessshire
Sarah Cameron 54, , b. Killmaley, Invernessshire
Address: 16 Lamb St, Dennistoun Glasgow

Allan's second marriage to Sarah:
1875 CAMERON ALLAN CAMERON SARAH ANDERSTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/10 0080

Allan's christening entry together with siblings. To parents Alexander Cameron and Janet WHYTE (White and variants):
1. ALEXANDER CAMERON Christening: 30 DEC 1804 Kilmallie, Argyll, Scotland
2. CHRISTIAN CAMERON Christening: 27 JAN 1807 Kilmallie, Argyll, Scotland
3. KATHARINE CAMERON Christening: 27 JAN 1807 Kilmallie, Argyll, Scotland
4. Mary Cameron Christening: 21 MAY 1809 Drimnasallie, Kilmallie, Argyll, Scotland - submitted entry
5. Mary Cameron Christening: 24 MAR 1814 Drimnasallie, Kilmallie, Argyll, Scotland - submitted entry
6. ALLAN CAMERON Christening: 04 NOV 1821 Kilmallie, Argyll, Scotland
There is a different couple with the same names having children in the Gorbals Glasgow late 1820s to 30s, married 1827 in Glasgow.

Monica - I cant thank you enough! Sorry its taken so long to acknowledge your hard work but I hadn't noticed that you had replied later on with all this information. I clicked on the link for new replies to my posts but this topic never came up for some bizarre reason which is why i turned my attention to posting on the Inverness-shire board.
I've checked out all the information you so kindly provided and it is my ggg grandfather Allan! He's been kind to himself in terms of his age a few times but what's a few years between family? :P
I am now heading off to try and get further back on the Kilmallie Camerons. Wish me luck!
Thanks sooooooo much again Monica

Hi Tracey,
I appreciate this is an old post, and you may not even be on here anymore, but I just thought I would pop in. My great great grandfather is James McGimpsey, Christinas First husband! I was just wondering if you are aware of any children they had together? I know they weren't married for long!

Hi Rachael
Welcome to RootsChat :)
Just curious. Was James McGimpsey previously married before meeting Christina? Could this be him in 1901?
James McGimpsey 27 coal miner b. Ireland
Maggie McGimpsey 26 b. England
James McGimpsey 7
Barbara McGimpsey 4
Thomas McGimpsey 2
Agnes McGimpsey 8 Months
Address: 127 Roman Rd, Motherwell, Dalziel

Likely not the correct census entry for him as the death in 1902 in Dalziel showed that James McGimpsey as aged 43.

Hi Monica,
Thank you so much :)
He was married before Christina, but it was to Annie (or Ann) maiden name Thom, and she was born in Motherwell. I have been struggling to find him in the 1891 census but have just found him with christina in 1901, and it would appear they have 3 children together (from what I can tell on the census). This family is driving me crazy lol!
Thank you for the info though, McGimpsey isn't really a common name around here (motherwell, scotland) so I'll take note of the census you found, as they will likely be related!

Their children's birth certs should include date and place of parents' marriage. They may have passed themselves off as married though!

Annie died in December in 1892 and he married Christina in February 1893. I am wondering if its possible he and Annie weren't together in 1891 and thats why I can't find them together on a census! Although I can't seem to find anyone, so who knows! Lol!

This is all I can see so far for 1891 in Dalziel. I think it is the James we had already who shows in 1901 with Maggie above:
Andrew McGimpsey 59 gen lab b. Ireland
Bella McGimpsey 47 b. Ireland
James McGimpsey 19 b. Ireland
Agnes McGimpsey 16 b. Stonehouse, Lanarkshire
Thomas McGimpsey 11 b. Motherwell
Address: 39 Watsonville Dalziel
This family there too in 1881.

Hey
Sorry for the delay in getting back about this post.
James was married to 1/ Annie Thom 2/ Christina Cameron
He was listed as MCGEMCEY on his marriage cert to Annie Thom and was living at 20 Shieldmuir, Motherwell at time of their marriage.
Listed as MCGEMCEY on his marriage cert to Christina in 1893, made his mark so was illiterate.
1901 Census 70 Shieldmuir, Craigneuk
James McGempsy HEAD 41 Puddler Tollcross
Christina McGempsy WIFE 38 Dalziel
David McGempsy SON 18 Labourer Dalziel
Annie McGempsy DAU 14 Dalziel
Hugh McGempsy SON 12 Dalziel
Robert McGempsy SON 15 Labourer Dalziel
James McGempsy SON 3 Dalziel
Frank McGempsy SON 5 Dalziel
Alexander McGempsy SON 6m Dalziel
James' death cert lists as MCGIMPSEY. He died at 1.20am aged 43 years. Chronic bronchitis, 10 months. Registered by Christina McGimpsey, widow, by her mark.
James and Christina had 3 children (that I have been able to find). Christina was a 'character' and I'm trying not to judge her life - she was my 2xgreat granny after all but she had numerous relationships/marriages that resulted in children.
Francis was born 1896 in Motherwell.
James was born 23/4/1898 at 70 Shieldmuir, Motherwell and died 26/1/1902 at 106 Shieldmuir, Motherwell.
Alexander was born 2/10/1900 at 70 Shieldmuir.
Alexander married Annie McKee 25/8/1923 in the RC Church Craigneuk and had 2 children that I know of - Annie McKee McGimpsey born 1923 and Alexander born Dec 1925 in 115 Wellington Place, Craigneuk and died 8/3/1926.
