Hi,
I've got the Glasgow Post Office Directory 1852/3, if anyone wants a look up.

Can I ask how the directory is indexed; by names or streets? :)
Thanks,

Hi Hume24
It's indexed by name, although it allows for searches by street or occupation.

Hi again,
In that case, could I have a look-up for the name Herbertson? First names are Thomas, James and possibly a Mary living in her own home. I have all three in Lynedoch Place, Barony district, if it's any help? :)
Thank you,

Hi Hume,
Found 2 James Herbertsons - I think the first one may be yours:
Herbertson, James, of J. Herbertson & Brothers, - ho. 1, Lynedoch Pl, Woodlands Rd.
Also:
Herbertson, James & Brothers, wrights and builders, - Lynedoch St, Woodlands Rd.
Nothing found for Thomas or Mary.

Thanks for that, Sueky! Definitely the correct James. I suspect Thomas and Mary may have still been living with James. :)

Hi,
At least 2 ancestors had businesses in Glasgow at that time. I'd greatly appreciate further information on them:
Archibald Fleming was a grocer or victualler. On the 1851 census he was listed as living at 81 Great Eastern Rd., Barony, Glasgow.
There is a possibility that there were 2 grocers named "Archibald Fleming" in Glasgow at that time - any indications in the Directory of more than one?
Another ancestor businessman was James Anderson, spirit dealer, probably at 46 Milton Ln., Milton, Glasgow - does he show up in the Directory?
many thanks for your help,
Brian

Hi Brian,
Welcome to Rootschat :)
I've checked the Directory for Fleming.
There is no Archibald Fleming listed and no Fleming's at Great Eastern Rd.
There is a:
Fleming, James, victualler, 28 Main St, Glasgow
and also:
Fleming, Mrs, victualler, 49 Main St, Calton.
Also looked for Anderson.
There is no James Anderson at the Milton Lane address.
There is a:
Anderson, James, wine, spirit and provision merchant, 26 Bedford St.
There are other Anderson's listed as spirit dealers/merchants, but none are called James - if you would like these details please let me know.

Hi Sueky, a bit new to this.
Have tried to look up these sort of directories from OZ to no avail.
Was wondering if you could look up a business for me.
Hutcheson & Dixon, Licensed Auctioneers & Appraisers in Glasgow. (as stated in Will)
Will dated 1862, so hoping they would have been around a while. One of the ptrs may have been relative of Wife of Deceased. ta muchly

Hi Jane,
Welcome to Rootschat :)
Found one reference to your Hutcheson & Dixon:
Hutcheson & Dixon, auctioneers, valuators and general agents, 8 and 12 Virginia St, Glasgow.
Hope this helps

Thanks for that, do you know of anywhere else I might be able to find more info on this business. Proprietors, employees and longevity.

Hi Sueky.
In the 1851 census there was a Margaret Harvey 60 General Dealer (Small Wares) Head (of a Household of 1) living at 50 Nelson St Parish of Gorbals, and at the same address there was Daniel Jenkins 54 Mariner and his wife Margaret 51 and their daughter Agnes Harvey 31 Seamstress and her son Samuel Harvey 4.
Could you look these up for us please, and see what your Directory has to say about any or all of them ?
It would be much appresicated. :D
Jeenie :) :)

Hi Jane,
You might find more information in:
Scottish National Archives, the Mitchell Library Archives or the Scotsman Newspaper Archives.
Not sure where else would be best to look.
Or you could always ask on the Scottish board :)

Hi Jeenie,
Have searched for Harvey (Margaret and Agnes) and also Jenkins (Daniel and Margaret)
Also looked for General Dealers and Seamstresses and Nelson Street.
Unfortunately there's nothing listed that matches what you've given me :(
It may be that there place of work was not there home address. In which case I found a possibility for Agnes?:
Harvey, Mrs, milliner and dressmaker, 6 Cathedral St.
There were other Mrs Harvey's listed. Those that had named occupations did not match Margarets and those without occuptations did not match with Nelson St. (if you would like the details on these Mrs Harvey's just let me know)

Thanks, Sueky. :) But every little bit of information helps.
By 1861 I can find no record anythwere of the Jenkins or of Agnes or her son, so they had to have moved sometime. (But I shall note Mrs on Cathedral St.)
On the other hand, by 1861 Margaret Harvey was living with her daughter Margaret Gilmour (nee Harvey) and her husband Patrick, Mason's Lab at 52 Ann St - but probably (?) not married at the time of your Directory. And there was a Robert Harvey, Mason's Lab (previously Weaver Cotton) also living with them.
In 1851 daughter Margaret Harvey, Winder was living with her brother Daniel, Labourer and his wife Bridget in 115 Garscube Road, so perhaps mother Margaret moved in with them, before daughter Margaret got married. (By 1861 Daniel Harvey and his family had moved to 107 Maitland)
I hate to do this to you, but could you check out these also - including Robert, at all 3 addresses ? :-[
Much appreciated :D
Jeenie. :) :)

Hi Jeenie,
I've checked all names and occupations at all the addresses given and found nothing - sorry :(
If you need anything else checking let me know.
