Title: Does anyone know Dover?
Post by: Uncle Reff on Friday 01 February 08 09:53 GMT (UK)
I have just received a certificate of a marriage that took place in the Wesleyan Chapel at Dover in 1845.

I cannot find anything on the Internet about this place and wondered if anyone knows of it.

The addresses of the happy couple were given as Old Post Office Lane, Dover; and Finnis / or Tinnis Hill, Dover. I cannot find any reference to them either.

Thanks in advance.

Finnis's Hill was in the Pier District http://www.dover.freeuk.com/town/thepier.htm and the Chapel was, until the 1960s, in Snargate Street, near the Grand Shaft http://www.dover.freeuk.com/church/snargate.htm.

I can't find any reference to Old Post Office Lane in the standard reference (Bavington Jones http://www.dover.freeuk.com/misc/booklist.htm#jones).

Let me have your e-mail address and I will send you a map of the area from the late 19th c.

I've found mention of a Rd BUSHELL, coal merchant, of Old Post Office Lane, Dover in an 1847 directory but I couldn't match him in a census to try and pinpoint anything :-\

I think this must have been Old Post Office Lane - this Insurance map from the turn of the 20th century shows the Stationer's and Post Office at 119 Snargate Street, just a few yards from the Wesleyan Chapel.

Behind the Post Office, built into the lower part of the cliff, is a small row of cottages up a flight of steps.  There is no obvious entrance from the street, so I can only assume they were approached via a passage-way through the terrace at the side of the shop.  The Post Office is shown here on the earliest map, surveyed in the late 1850s, so would be contemporary with the period you are looking at.

Im really interested in the map of Snargate Street - my forebears were at number 20.  Any chance of seeing this area?
