Hi I'm hoping that someone may be able to help with this. I have got census records for George Edge of Ashover from 1841 - 1861 but those records say his wife's name is Mary. Not sure of her maiden name.
According to my Great Aunt Jesse's diary, George married Hannah Marriott of Alderwasley and they had the following children:
George
Mary
Edward
Bessie
Isaac
William
Maria
John
I can't find any record of a George Edge marrying a Hannah Marriott.
I'd be very grateful if anyone can help please.
Thanks

Hi Deb
The 1841 has 2 George Edge's - both with wife Mary and both in Ashover so could be father and son
One is shown as b 1786 and the other 1806. As none of the children you mention show up on George the youngers entry - is it the older George you are enquiring about?
Could Aunt Jesse have been wrong?
Isaac was b around 1831 Ashover according to the 1851 census - this is from the IGI
Isaac Edge Christening: 24 MAY 1829 Ashover, Derby
Father: George Edge Mother: Mary
If you do a parent search on the IGI you will find most of the children you listed as born to George & Mary
PARENT SEARCH ON IGI
www.familysearch.org - On home page - click on “Advanced Search” to the right of the blue SEARCH button
Select “International Genealogical Index” from the left hand menu
Input fathers name and surname BUT only put mothers christian name as not all entries have the maiden name
REGION – select British Isles from the menu
COUNTRY – select one or “All countries”
COUNTY (will appear when you select COUNTRY) – select whichever matches what you know about the family

Thank you Carole
I guess Great Aunt Jesse must have been a bit confused! I don't know how old she was when she wrote in her diary.
Thanks again

The 2 George Edge's in Ashover married:
Mary Pogmore 26/12/1808 by banns
Mary Needham 27/5/1822 by banns
Nothing for a Hannah Marriot marriage in Ashover until 1844
All the best

Thank you Shirl.
What is banns?
If I'm on the right track I'd say it is Mary Needham that was married to our George. Still not sure though.
Does it say who Hannah Marriot married in 1844? I'm just interested to know as her name was in my aunt's diary.
I also noticed that you are researching the name Hole. I mention this because my g aunt also wrote in her diary that Albert Edge married Annie Hole at Trinity Church Chesterfield in 1936.
Thanks again

Hi Deb
Banns were read to the congregation in the parish church for 3 consecutive Sundays so that the union could be blessed .
The Hannah Marriott who married Henry White (from Ashover) was from Kelstedge, they were aged 18 & 19 yrs on marriage. The Hannah who married Anthony Marriott (from Ashover)shows that he was a widower, she was from Rattle.
Also found an earlier marriage of a Hannah Mariott (different spelling) 12/5/1841, Ashover to a George Holmes Cowley, parents George Mariott & Joseph Cowley.
You never know we might come across a link with the Hole family yet, good luck with your research
