Title: 1st july 1916 KOSB 3RD BN
Post by: ev on Sunday 27 January 08 22:05 GMT (UK)
hi all

just found andrew mccracken on CWGC died 1st july 1916
given the date can anyone confirm that he had taken part on the first
day of the somme offensive(attack wise)
army number 19772 3rd bn kosb
i've a fairly good knowledge of the ww 1 but not down to the level
of individual units
did the king's own scottish borderers take part in that attack ?

ev

PS his wife christina gorrie re-married james strachan 1920 and the address
scott street baillieston glasgow is in the family
andrew & christina were married 1913 old monkland lanark

but 3rd btn was a reserve unit  ???

would a death in france be registered in edinburgh ?
then "remembered with honour edinburgh comely bank cemetery"

thanks atom12

i had a feeling that his death did not happen in france
what are the chances of a young enlisted man losing his life at home
when on the same day 20,000 lost theirs in france
looking at the internet entries the KOSB 1st btn suffered many losses on
the 1st of july 1916
what a strange thing fate can be

Ev,

I should have added - if your research takes you to anyone or anywhere else in Baillieston, let me know, I've got the MI's and Burial Records for the only 2 Churchyards there.

I have only just joined this website and was looking for information on my family Gorrie/Eadie when I came across this thread.  Andrew McCracken was my great grandfather, he was in the KOSB but at the time of his death he was a garden and he died of peritonitis.  My great grandmother then remarried James Strachan.  Any information on my family would be grately appreciated.  Also, without knowing my brother joined the army in KOSB's without knowing our great grandfather had served with them!

Hi Faye , welcome to RootsChat  :)

Unfortunately all my detailed stuff for the Gorrie's and Eadie's is now in storage , however I've managed to find some limited info.

Your great grandmother was Christina Gorrie(1894 - 1963).
Parents Robert Gorrie(1853 - 1908) and Elizabeth Eadie(1856 - 1901) , married 17th Oct. 1873 Old Monkland Lanark.

My line is Christina's sister Elizabeth Eadie Gorrie(1883 - 1935) and William Boath Brown Hendry(1881 - 1963) , married 3rd July 1903 , Scott Street Baillieston Lanarkshire.
