Title: Upper Hasson
Post by: Little Mac on Saturday 26 January 08 15:55 GMT (UK)
1851 census states that Joseph Wells was born in Upper Hasson Surrey abt 1797.  Cannot find Upper Hasson - did it or does it exist? Or is this a transcribing error?  Many thanks Little Mac

It's not Pepper Harrow is it?  As Suz says it's very difficult to read the writing but I had a look on the GENUKI Surrey page & there's no 'Upper' anything & the only 'Harrow is Pepper Harrow,

Just had another look at the census image & it's definately 'Upper' something, so rule out Pepper Harrow  ::)
I did a Google search & there's Upper Hale a village between Farnham & Aldershot & Upper Halliford a small village, a part of Shepperton but I think that might be in Middlesex rather than Surrey.
In 1861 he's not very helpful as he only says, born Surrey  :-\

Just a thought but might it be Upper Harrow in Middlesex.  Not that there is a place called that but he might have known it as that.  He is living in Middlesex at the time of the 1851 census & maybe the enumerator made a mistake...clutching at straws here.
Just had a look on the IGI & indeed there was a Joseph Wells baptised in Pepper Harrow;

 JOS WELLS
 Christening: 19 FEB 1797 Holy Trinity, Guildford, Surrey

 JOSEPH WELLS
Christening: 07 JUL 1799 Peper Harow, Surrey.

Both extracted records,

Hi Jane

I'm begining to think its Peper Harrow as I have found a document today which states that 2 of the Wells are buried at Peper Harrow and checking the burial index and the IGI there certainly seems to be a family connection there.

Thanks for your help - I think I'm headed in the right direction now, cheers!

Wendy :)
