Hi Olias,
Here is your Philpott family on the 1851 census:
ref HO107 1626b folio 243, Preston
Thomas Philpott head mar age 40 ag lab born Sheldwich
Sarah do wife mar age 41 born Margate
Jas do son age 14 ag lab
Ann do dau age 12
Sarah do dau age 8 scholar
Maria do dau age 6 scholar
William do son age 4
Jane do dau age 1
all children born Preston
(no sign of Thomas at home, there is an entry on a neighbouring farm for Thomas Philpott age 12, and John Philpott age 16 both ploughboys born Preston, living with John Brett)
I've checked all of Preston and Boughton 1851 for your Smith family, but couldn't find them.
xx Carol.

Hi Olias,
I think this may be the entry for Thomas on the 1851 census, although it doesn't quite match:
ref HO107 1626b folio 339, North Lane, Ospringe (but included with the Faversham census)
Thos Smith head mar age 39 letter carrier born Boughton
Mary A do wife mar age 38 born Faversham
Thomas do son age 11 scholar born Boughton
Ann M do dau age 8 scholar born Faversham
Richard do son age 5 scholar born Faversham
The entry for Thomas snr on the 1841 gives his age as 30, so this could tally. I suppose that Thomas's wife could be known as Ann or Mary Ann, and their daughter here is shown as Ann M, maybe named after her mother.
Maybe you can make some headway with this family now,
xx Carol.

Definitely the philpotts but I,m not sure about the Smiths. I think it maybe but there was another Thomas around at the same time so I will check my other references to be sure.
Thank you for taking the time to do this research for me I am very grateful

Hello Olias,

I can empathisize with your SMITH quandry.  I have a line of Smith at Faversham that married into my Gregorys and then later my Duncans.  So, I hope I can add some information that might help to keep you in the right track.  I also have a direct Smith line in Somerset.

1851 Census at Faversham, District 3c, page 42:
Thomas P. Smith, head, married, 39, postman. born Boughton-under-Blean
Ann M. Smith, wife, married, 38, born Faversham
Thomas Smith, son, 11, born Boughton-under-Blean
Ann M. Smith, daughter, 8, born Faversham
Richard F. Smith, son, 5, born Faversham

I realize that this information has already been posted but there are a few corrections here that may help you.  Additionally, I have the following christenings and marriages pulled from the parish registers and bishop's transcripts:

1.  Thomas Peirce Smith christened 8 Apr 1832 at Faversham parents being Thomas /Ann Maria Smith.  [Note: There is no burial for this child at Faversham, but there is a later marriage - see further down this message.]

2.  Ann Maria Smith not christened at Faversham but a later marriage appears.

3.  Richard Frederick Smith christened at Faversham on 1 July 1845, parents Thomas and Ann Maria, he postman.

4.  Burial at Faversham of Thomas Pearse Smith on 2 August 1860 at age 50 years "a letter carrier for many years", resided on Gatefield Lane.

5.  A posthumous christening of Mary Elizabeth Smith on 09 Nov 1851   parents being Thomas Pierce Smith/Ann Maria Smith, North Lane, postman found in Faversham BT.

6.  Marriage of Thomas Pierce Smith on 26 April 1884 to Emily Kate Sladden: he aged 24, labourer, residing at Faversham, father Thomas Smith, labourer & she 23, no occupation, residing at Faversham, father Harry Sladden, labourer.  Witness:  Henry Cripps and Amelia Tricker (entry #66) in Faversham BT.

7.  Christening of Thomas Pierce Smith on 3 Apr 1861 at Faversham to Thomas Pierce Smith and Sarah of Quay Lane, mariner, found  in Faversham BT.

8.  Christening of Christopher Alfred Smith on 06 Nov 1853 parents:    Thomas/Sarah, Quay, dredger, found in Faversham BT

9.  Marriage of Ann Maria Smith to William Roe on 06 Apr 1862 - he 22, hoopmaker, resides Gatefield Lane, father William Roe, hoopmaker & she 20, no occupation, resides Gatefield Lane, father Thomas Pierce Smith, letter carrier. Wit: Benjamin Berry and Lydia Tookey (entry #32)   found in Faversham BT.  One child was christened at Faversham - William Robert on 13 Sept 1863.

10.  Marriage of Mary Elizabeth Smith to Ebenezer Joseph Ballard on 02 May 1869, he 23, labourer, residing Gatefield Lane, father Joseph Ballard, a bricklayer & she 20, no occupation, residing Gatefield Lane, father Thomas Pearse Smith, postman.  Witnesses:  William and Catharines King. Found in Faversham BT.

I hope this all helps and I think you can now welcome the 1851 family into your fold   :)

Best wishes,
Susan

Wow thank you
I have not been 'doing' the family tree for a while now, having lost broadband then recovering it after two months but this has refired my imagination and I will start boring non-interested parties again
Many thanks for your hard work

Hi,
I was interested to read your topic; I realise it was a while ago, but i am researching Roe's and have a William Roe as mentioned by Susan; born 1840, occupation hoopmaker, father William b 1815 also hoopmaker.
May have some further info for you if you need it. Would also be interested to hear about Ann Maria Smith and William Roe's family. We are descendants of his brother George!
Best wishes,
Sarah  :)

Hi, this is my first posting for a couple of years. I had completely forgotten about the sterling work carried out by zacktyr. I have finally tried to collate all my info in a computer program so now I can see where I am.
As you can probably see there are a number of Thomas Pearce Smith's so it can get a bit confusing.
At the moment I don't know when Thomas and Ann Marie were married but I am assuming its Faversham
Thomas parents were William and Catherine he was christened July 7 1811 in Boughton under Blean church (village next to Faversham)
Thomas died in Faversham 1860 and I believe Ann Marie died in 1861 but I haven't got the death certs yet
I believe William died in 1843 and Catherine 1865 but again I haven't got the death certs yet
Catherine is listed as an almswoman on the 1861 census although on the 1851 she is living with son James and family she is listed as a pauper but born in Ospringe
As you will appreciate Smith is very tricky and where I have said 'I believe' I cannot 100% prove it but as more records are appearing on tinternet, more evidence becomes available
I will order the death certs now.
I can only do net research as I am self employed and I made a major error getting side tracked jumping generations on my grandmothers side only to finally realise she was adopted and therefore all the research was not blood related. A lesson learned.
If I can be of any more help please don't hesitate. I would like what info you have regarding Ann-Marie junior if you have the time

Hello Olias,

Since my post in 2006 responding to your initial query, I have expanded my information concerning the Smiths of the Faversham area of Kent, as well as a few other families, several of which have brushed up against your Smiths in Boughton.

I wanted to write back in response to your most recent post as I want to clarify for you that there are two (2) separate families in that area that are headed by a William and Catharine Smith.  Yes, 2 separate families!  And because of the complexity of the information, I am going to separate it into two separate posts, this one dealing strictly with the William and Catharine Smith problem.

The William and Catharine to whom you are referring (she being with her son James Smith in 1851 and an almswoman in 1861) is NOT the couple for whom you are looking.  This particular couple were married at Ospringe on 14 Oct 1816, she being Catharine Barber.  Both were of Ospringe and both were single.  The marriage was by banns with witnesses Elizabeth Barber and John Lott.  The date of this marriage, singularly, precludes this William and Catharine Smith couple from being the couple who christened your Thomas Pierce Smith at Boughton in 1811.  Furthermore, this Catharine Barber, appears to have had a very small family with William Smith - James and a daughter named Sarah who christened an illegitimate child, Mary Clackett Smith in 1839.  Additionally, this Catharine Smith (nee Barber) had an illegitimate child of her own named James who was christened during July of 1816 at Ospringe and was living a few doors down from her in 1851.

So, scouring my records, I have been able to follow the William and Catharine Smith at Boughton, for you.  As it turns out, the William and Catharine at Boughton had a daughter who married into the Rook family and it was that collective family that I was researching in an effort to keep all my Rucks straight.  At any rate, William at Boughton was still living in 1851 at Boughton with his wife, Catharine, but Ancestry has mistranscribed his name as "Rothe William Smith".  In fact, his name was Richard William Smith and that is the name from my records, which were obtained from the LDS GSU microfilm of Boughton 1851 census.  Here are the details:

1851 England Census

Civil Parish: Boughton Under Blean
Ecclesiastical parish: Canterbury
County/Island: Kent
Country: England

Registration district: Faversham
Sub-registration district: Boughton

Richard Wm Smith, head, married, 67 (bc 1784), victualler, Faversham
Catharine Smith, wife, married, 62, born at Boughton-under-Blean, Kent, England
Anne Smith, female, daughter, unmarried, 24, born at Boughton-under-Blean, Kent, England
Edith Smith, female, granddaughter, unmarried, 4, born at Maidstone, Kent, England
Richard Wm Rook, male, unmarried, grandchild, 14, born at Boughton-under-Blean, Kent, England
Joseph Rook, male, unmarried, grandchild, 12, born at Boughton-under-Blean, Kent, England
Edward Brydges, male, unmarried, servant, 24, ostler, born at Eastry, Kent
Edward Minter, male, unmarried, lodger, 25, bricklayer journeyman, born at Canterbury, Kent

As there has been some discourse concerning the use of and proper format of source citation details, I have set out the full and proper source citation details here, which are:

Name of Compiler:  Office of National Statistics, England
Title of Publication: 1851 Census, England and Wales
Publication Details:  On microfilm by Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A..
References:  Edition number - see Class: HO107, piece 1626, p. 5, folio 90

ISBN or ISSN number:  None
Additional Comments regarding state or condition of source:  None

Copy made and/or in my possession:  No, but could be easily retrieved.

For interested parties a template of a full source citation can be found at:  http://www.ancestrysolutions.com/Source%20Citation.pdf

A source citation such as that above can easily be abbreviated to resemble this:  Class HO107, piece 1626, p. 5, fol. 90, GSU film #0193527, particularly where it is widely known who the compiler was and that microfilms of almost the entire series were undertaken by the Genealogical Society of Utah and are available via any Family History Centre, worldwide.  For future references, I promise, I will use the abbreviated version.

I'll have to break this into three (possibly four) posts as I've exceeded the maximum number of characters.

Check next post for remainder of the William/Catharine Smith saga!

Sincerely,
 Susan

Continuing with Richard William and Catharine Smith from previous message:

Now continuing with this William and Catharine Smith at Boughton, as I said previously, he was actually Richard William Smith and was christened at Faversham on 4 Jul 1784 [BT] to John Smith and Mary (nee Mann).

In 1841 Richard William Smith was at home in Boughton with his two daughters, Anne aged 13 and Catharine aged 15.  His wife was not at home and I have not found her elsewhere in Boughton up to this time.

By 1861 Richard William Smith had died and his wife Catharine was living in Maidstone with her daughter, Anne, who had married the lodger from the 1851 census, Edward Bridges (note alternative surname spelling).

By 1871 Catharine Smith had apparently also died as I have been unable to locate her after the 1861 census.  However, in 1871 the Bridges family moved back to Boughton under Blean and became landlords of one of the local inns, when two of my extended James family from Dunkirk pops up as lodgers with the Bridges family.  Another family also lodging with the Bridges, the Branchetts was the subject of another research for a different posting.

I have not followed the Bridges beyond this point.

So, here you have the elimination of the William and Catharine Smith at Ospringe but the adoption of the Richard William and Catharine Smith at Boughton, with an extra generation prior to Richard William thrown in for good measure.

I know that it will take some time for you to digest all of this information.  But hold on, because the next post will put all of the Thomas Pierce Smith's together with their respective Richard William and Catharine Smith.

Sincerely,
Susan

Hi

I was interested in your Thomas Peirce Smith.  My fathers family were living in and around the East Kent/Dover Canterbury area.  The name pierce as a middle name has cropped up through several generations.  I wonder if he could possibly be connected to the Wellard family.

Hi. At the moment I have no idea where the pierce comes from and so far I havent come across a Wellard. Having said that my research is quite narrow at the moment.
The thos pierce's all come from Faversham and Boughton under Blean. I do have a connection with Preston under Wingham (Sladden) but they are a very late connection with the thos pierce's

Hi Thank you for your reply.  My fathers family scattered all around the area between deal, Ramsgate and Canterbury areas and appear to be prolific breeders.

I must admit when I was growing up in Minster in Thanet the only Wellards were my close relatives and I was the only Wellard at school.  We seem scarce but there are a lot of us.
