Title: Can anyone help with this LATIN inscription?

I know its not really clear, but some looks decipherable.. pity my Latin is so poor :-[

Regrettably, it's a long time since I did Latin too.

I can't read the small print, but can say that you should read "v" as "u", and "uxor" is "spouse".  I think (am not sure) that "obiire" means "to die" and "obiit" is the third person singular.  I think that "O spes sola" means "O only hope".  "Nulla" is "none",  The middle section is blacked out but I think I see a word beginning with "defunct..." meaning "dead".

The other thing I can say to you is that I think there is a Latin tutorial on the National Archives site.  If you look at it, it may help you to decipher your inscription.

Or alternatively, someone who is a Latin scholar may come on here and do it all!  :P

Thanks guys.. I looked at those.

This is what it *looks* like so far (mid-section). I'm sure it doesn't make sense as I have written it

If you change your subject to read "Can anyone help with this LATIN inscription", you may get more help.  I'm sure there is a Rootschatter who has translated Latin before on here.

I know some Latin, but this is difficult as I can't read it!

"Spectatores" probably means "Onlookers" - It's addressing those looking at the memorial.

"Sepulcorum memoria" "(This) burial place (is) in memory".... not sure of the rest.

"Corpore fuiit haec sunt Thomas & Alicia Gerard" Here lie the bodies of Thomas and Alicia Gerard"

Then I'm lost again...

"Elizabeth, Edwardus, Gulielmus Alicia pulchra"  "E, E, William (and) beautiful Alice"

Thats a great start! :) I kind of thought Spectatores meant anyone who was looking, but wasnt certain.
 I think Iuncta Deo might mean "next to/near to God"?

I think that line is something like: in life, close to [something], in death, close to God.

But iuncta Deo is not grammatically correct - it should be iuncta deus. I think. :-\

Tenses and declensions were always my downfall.. I got "Ungraded" for my Latin O'Level, I'm afraid :-[.

There, I've learned something, ludovica!  Would have got "nobilis" but never heard of "stirpe"!

When you get it all translated, do post the translation!  Would be most interested to read it!
