Just wondering if someone could help with some information.
Some of my ancestors I`ve recently found on the 1881 Census lived at 251 Syston Street ( Seg Mem Bk ).
Firstly, What does Seg Mem Bk stand for or mean?
Secondly, Is 251 Syston Street still standing today?
Many thanks Steve
-
Well I thik it READS (See Mem Bk)
I think it's a notation, not part of the address.

251. Syston Street - Corner of Syston Street & Curzon Street.
Next door to the Elementary School
1916 Trade Directory = Newsagents Shop
Wm Tom Goodrich.
To day = That part is a small Industrial Estate
Doubt if the shop is still standing ....sadley
Re:~ See Mem Bk ...?
Just wonder if this refers to an amendment Book of the Enumerator?
I see that according to the Trade Directory for 1881
I has Henry Wells as Shop keeper
But on the Census return it states his occupation as Shoe Riveter
& his wife as the Shop worker .... ?

Hi Zena,
Thanks for your reply and the information enclosed. Hope its not too cheeky to ask :-[ but should you ever find a photo of Syston Street, would love a copy if possible please. :)
I live in Norfolk and although I visited Leicester with my parents on many occasions I can not remember the scenery or landscape as I was very young at the time.
Best wishes Steve
-
Hello Steve
Yes I certainly will let you have a copy if I manage to get one .
Have wrote to the Leicester mercury today. they publish some old pictures most days.

Just wondering if anyone could point me to a map website that could allow me to see the layout of this area :)
Ideally what I would like to do is print out a street map of the area so I could place my ancestors in their locations.
I have checked various auction sites, they have ordnance survey maps for the 1900`s but no street maps are listed.
Any suggestions most welcome. :) :)

Greeting’s Again Steve
Have tried the Alan Godfrey Map site ?
http://www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk/acatalog/Leicestershire.html
Very good value for £ 2.25 per map
You need :~
Le 31.11. Leicester ( NE ) 1913. for Syston Street.
Le 31.10. Leicester ( NW) 1902. for King Richards Road .
By the way in the Leicester Mercury ( Mr Leicester Page )
Last night.
There was picture of a Railway Engine & it’s crew standing beneath
Catherine Street road bridge about to go into the Belgrave Road Station.

Great photos Xinia ;D ;D
Thankyou very much for taking the time to post them. I`m interested in the photo with the lady standing beside the car because you can see the bottom of the Street. If the photo was taken in Syston Street what is the name of the Road/Street behind the cyclist?
I`ve got a map of the area which I`ve enlarged so I can place where some of my ancestors lived. looking at the map it appears it might be a terraced row to include shops before Leadenhall Street????
Great pics and thankyou. Steve ;)
-
looks like a couple of shops or something down there... I am checking my memory -- Syston Street ran from Melton Rd which has always been full of shops so it could be that..........?? not sure will see if my sister remembers she has a better memory.
-
If its any help, on my map Syston Street has Fose Way and Tramway at one end ( this is at the T junction I was talking about earlier near Leadenhall Street ) and Cobden Street the other end. Can`t find any mention of Melton Road :( Although I have found Melton Street sandwiched between Belgrave Gate, Junction Road and Britannia Street?

Welll?!?!?!? memory testing time now... when I was very young My Gt. Aunt lived in Cobden street (which is no longer there) and we used to walk from there to Aunt Ethels in Syston St.
Aunt Ethel lived half way down... I remember the pub on the corner which I think is still there. Sainsburys is there now. Wish I could go and have a look round...but not able just now. Need an old map
These days Belgrave gate leads to Melton Road which leads to the Fosse Way (A46 or A47)
and that was the end I was thinking the shops may be..
The other end of the street that cut through to Cobden St. I am not sure if there is still that end of Syston St.. Sorry getting confused very old now..... will have to check it out and get my husband to drive me around the area (if nothing untoward happens and we will take some snaps??? (hopefully))

right this shows a map of the area as of now....
this is where I was getting mixed up...
there are two areas of Syston street.
My Aunt lived in the area that is near Dysart street. that now leads to the flyover. Hope this helps will have to leave it for now....
But will try and get back to it over the weekend. bfn
-
Thanks very much Xinia for those replies and the information enclosed. ;D I can`t even remember the area at all, so its nice when people like yourself go to the trouble of explaining how the streets and roads joined up compared with today.
Steve
-
heres the map see if you can get an idea
when my aunt lived there the street was not closed off at the end near the flyover....
-
I was wondering if you could help with the pub you've marked. Do you have any idea if that would be 123 Syston Street? An ancestor of mine worked for a Beer Retailer and lodged in the premises.
Many thanks in advance
-
sorry not sure... could check it out ...but it will not be for a while.
xin
-
Not to worry. Was out of curiosity more than anything. It's on the other half's side of the family. I'm getting a little concerned. The fellow that worked at the pub on Syston Street isn't the only one to work in or own a pub!
-
thats fine its a good trade even nowadays...

Hi to all posters on this thread. Found it by accident whilst researching the Culpin/ Ballard families.
Just recieved a copy of a death certificate and the address of the deceased was 199 Syston St. 1899.
Sadly my Great Great Aunts daughter died aged 9 months at that address. Many more relatives lived around the St Savours Rd area. Stanhope St, Halsead St.
Although I was raised in the Coalville area my Grandparents lived in the Freemans Cottages on Welford Rd. Whilst on leave from the RN I would work aweek or two for extra money, one job was at The Midlands Club Brewery, I'm sure it was on Syston St. It was in 1963, the street was in very poor shape, do not remember many houses left on it, lots of vacant lots.
Living in Florida now, retired. Returned to Leicester last December and like my Grandfather and earlier descendents was made a Freeman of Leicester.
Hope I did'nt bore you all to much........
-
Hello Mike,
Well no not bored at all, very interesting. And more so regarding Welford Road.. My Father who is 89 lived in Welford Road as a small boy. His 2 up 2 down was opposite the Police Station.. and he often talks about spending time in prison as a child, (he was allowed to play in the wardens yard?!) Not sure if they were the Freemans Cottages though. He also served in the Royal Navy. If you served in the Pub on or near Syston Street - its very possible you met My Great Aunt Ethel she was a barmaid and proud of it. Our family have never been accredited with being a 'Freeman' it still costs a fortune to live here ??? ::) ;D ;D ;D (sorry)
xin
-
Hi Xin
that was a quick reply, thanks. The Freemans Bldg was directly opposite University Road, on Welford Rd. Old Victorian bldg, still there, but now offices for the University.
Sold years ago and the money used to build the Freemans estate in Aylestone.
Just checked and the Midlands Club Breweries was on Syston St. Still standing as a food warehouse. Think they paid me about 11 quid a week, it was'nt really a brewery, it was a bottling plant. Dark, damp and very dreary, not a very nice place to work.
Don't remember a pub on Syston St, after a day drinking in Midlands Club Brewery (during work, no one minded ) A pub was the last thing on my mind at knocking off time.
My Great Great Aunt, who lived on Syston St (and Olson St, Stanhope St) lost all her 4 children , three under the age of1, and 1 aged 12, Her husband died a year after her oldest child died , then she immigrated to Queensland and married her brothers sister in law. A marriage of convinience I'm sure. She had no more children but her brother had 8 children, his oldest son had 10 children! I am in touch with them, they live in a small town called Wallumbilla. We all descend from the York family who came from Sibbertoft, N.Hants. Still searching for Frederick York, last residence was Leicester.
-
oh..crikey... I am descended from the York'e' family from Shenton... Leicester..
another almost almost almost link
xin
-
My gr-gr aunt was born at 110 Syson St. in June 1889. would like to know more about your search.
-
Hi
my research has been limited to the York and Ballard family. All the Yorks came from Sibbertoft in N,Hants and the Ballards came from Barrow upon Soar. No one famous, most were agricultural labourers and appeared to migrate to Leicester during the Industrial Revolution. The early Ballards were Freemen of Leicester, I went back to Leicester last year and was ''made free''. All the Yorks are now in Australia, I am in touch with them and hope to visit them in the near future. (All 100 of them !!! )
The other side of the family, Johnsons and Clay come from Coalville and Bream, not been able to trace many before 1840 tho. Will continue to work on it.
-
Hi Xin
long time since last post, I eventually traced Frederick York, sadly he died aged four. Hard to believe so many children back in the 1800's (and earlier ) never reached adulthood.
-
Yes so sad.. I have oooodles of York/es but mostly from around Hinckley/shenton... some did move around though...
glad you found him... so no pics.... shame...

Hi all.. just wanted to add i to had family on syston st Leicester. listed in 1875 directory.- Allen jph (Joseph) of Allen and southam bottled water manufacturer. ( his wife was Elizabeth Southam).

Hello,
I was born in Syston Street. No.81 opposite the Clubs Brewery. The Street then was known as the longest Street in Leicester. It started at Belgrave road and ran right to the top ( forgotten name just for now) The railway station at the top was The Great Northern. My Grandad also lived in the street and use to go to the Willow Bridge Inn with a jug to get some beer to bring home. The houses were mostly rented and a toilet was shared by 4 family's. If you would like any other information I will try to help.
-
Hello
Your Grandad must have known my Aunt then as she lived there for years and worked in the pub....
;D
