Her name was Sarah Ellen born around 1880 give or take a year or two.
Her married name was Laverack and I know plenty about that side of the family but would like to know more about her parents if possible.
I believe her mother was called Harriet Burgan/Burgen or could have been Young. There has been a lot of silence about her past so I suspect she may have been born out of wedlock.
Sarah was born in Bradford West Yorkshire.
Any info would be appreciated, thanks

It looks like she married in the name of Burgon.
From FreeBMD
Sarah Ellen Burgon and Frank Laverack on same page. June Q 1904 at Bradford. Vol 9b Page 158.
Hope this helps.

There is also this 1891 census entry which seems to meet your criteria.

Harriet 42, Washerwoman, b Bilton Staffs
Sarah E 12, b Bradford

Hi DS
I was just about to post that in 1891 Harriet is enumerated as born Bilton, Scotland but it looks like Stafford to me on the manuscript and in 1901 as you say she is born Bilton, Yorkshire. ???

Do you think this may be where the Burgan/Young confusion comes in?

Hi Sandie
Well done 8)
I think that you might have found the Marriage there, but just in case anyone else has difficulty finding the entry on FreeBMD his name is spelled as Birgan on the Index.

Possible Birth Registration
1848 Tadcaster JAS quarter 23 658
Harriett Young
This is the only Harriett Young registered in Tadcaster between 1845 and 1855, so there is a good chance that it is the right one to match with the census entry.

It all looks very promising doesn't it. ;D
As the marriage of William and Harriet is later than the birth of Sarah Ellen (Young) it looks possible that William is not her father.

It certainly all seems to fit :o (but whether it is right is another matter ;D)

..in 1891 Harriet is enumerated as born Bilton, Scotland but it looks like Stafford to me
The 1891 original census document does say Stafford Bilton. I am convinced that this is a mistake and that it should have been Bilton in Yorkshire, as indicated in 1901. The enumerator possibly confused it with Bilston.
Apart from the positive evidence (census and birth registration) shown above in the earlier replies to support this, there is also the negative evidence that there was no birth registration for anyone called Harriet Young (or variants of the first name) between 1845 and 1855 anywhere in Staffordshire and certainly not in Wolverhampton which would have covered Bilston.

DS and Sandie
thank you so much for your input, it seems like I'll have to spend some time putting it all together but it should be fun - and interesting

Found a scrap of paper last night in amongst some family papers saying that Harriet Young was born in Bilton, Aberford in 1851 and that her father was called George. Harriet died 6.11.1924 in Bradford, she lived with William Burgon in Wilsden and they were married in 1883.
I wonder why the person who wrote all this wasn't more detailed, maybe the info was available. This means that the census for 1861 & 1851 may not be my family as the dates don't match and there is no mention of George
-
Well, look what else I found :o ....
1841
Tadcaster HO107/1356/9 Folio 7 Page 6
William Young 60 Ag Lab
Hannah 50
Ann 20
George 13
Jane 12
Elizabeth 9
Thomas 5
Township of Bilton
All born in County. Ages over 15 rounded down

So, Harriet could be the daughter of George Young, the person shown in 1841 or she could be the illegitimate child of one of the unmarried daughters shown in 1851 or 1861 and the father could still have been called George.
As mentioned in an earlier post, there was only the one Birth Registration for anyone called Harriet Young in Tadcaster during the ten year period from 1845 to 1855 and that was in the third quarter of 1848. This date matches the census information.
I would therefore question the 1851 birth date shown on the scrap of paper but the rest of the information seems to tie in.

So, if Harriet was born in 1851 then she could be on that census with father George - he was listed as 13 in 1841 so I suppose he could have married and had a child in 10 years.
the other family did seem to have a lot of unmarried daughters and I guess it's possible the date of 1851 could be wrong.

Hi Judith

IGI Batch M011891 has this Marriage...
09/11/1803 Bilton in Ainsty
William Young & Hannah Brown
There are also the following Christenings in Bilton in Ainsty for children of William and Hannah Young....
Batch C011893
02/03/1806 Sarah Young
16/08/1808 Hannah Young
27/04/1810 Thomas Young
29/03/1812 Richard Young
Batch C011892
16/08/1813 William Young
16/10/1815 Edward Young
07/01/1818 Anne Young
23/08/1820 John Young
26/02/1823 Elizabeth Young
05/07/1828 George Young
Based upon this information, the last three children shown in 1841 (Jane, Elizabeth and Thomas) were probably grand children of William and Hannah.

I'm writing this from memory so forgive me if the date's out but wasn't registration voluntary until around 1875, marriages and deaths tended to get registered but it wasn't compulsory to register births before then so there will be people missing :(
-
Thanks for the further info.
I don't think William and Hannah are anything to do with Harriet. The note was accurate about other things so I think Harriet's father was called George and I also noticed that it said he was a shoemaker in York! Sorry missed that bit before.
-
I don't think William and Hannah are anything to do with Harriet.
OK Judith. I will not pursue that line of enquiry any further.
If at some future time you change your mind and do come to believe that William and Hannah were her grand parents, most of their children, as shown on the IGI list, are quite easy to track through the censuses (they all lived a few doors from each other) but you will need to be aware when looking for BMD information about them that the Registration District covering Bilton changed during the relevant timescale as follows...
Tadcaster - 1837 to 1862 (May)
Bramham - 1862 (June) to 1869 (August)
Wetherby - 1869 (September)
Best wishes
DS :)
