I am new to the list and interested in the names Gathercole and Pye. I have traced my family back from Sheffield present day, to Lakenheath, previous to 1800. I am stuck on the marriage of John Gathercole and Sarah Pye. He was born in Lakenheath and baptised there in 1787 and I believe that she might also have been baptised there, but not sure about this. I cannot find their marriage at Lakenheath, which I imagine took place around 1800. All their children are baptised there, the first one being in 1801.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Carose

Hi Carose
I am also looking for information Sarah Pye and John Gathercole, I am descended from their daughter Betsy Gathercole.
I am going to Suffolk Records next week to look again at the records of Lakenheath and nearby villages. I have looked through some of the Lakenheath ones before but they aren't very clear so I might see something I missed the first time. If you can think of anything else that might help let me know.

Welcome to Rootschat Jane!
There's a marriage in Lakenheath of John Gathercole, widower otp and Mary Seaman otp on 23 Dec 1814, so perhaps Sarah Pye died fairly young.
The dates quoted by Carose look suspect, unless John's was a late baptism, as if he was baptised shortly after birth then he'd have only been 14 in 1801.

Hi David
Thanks for the information, I'll look into that one, see if there's a burial for Sarah. Unfortunately Gathercole is quite a common name in Lakenheath and a lot of them seem to be called John! I haven't attempted yet to sort them all out.

Hi pb104
Thanks for the information, but it must be a different Besty as my ancestor married and moved to Norfolk and died there, but they maybe related.

I'm new to rootschat and I've recently been researching the Gathercole tree. i too have traced my family back from Sheffield to Lakenheath.
I descended from Betsy Ann Gathercole, daughter of William Gathercole (b. abt 1813) and Elizabeth Hannah Clow. I'm stuck on the parents of William Gathercole as there were a few born around the same time in that area. The most likely William is in Eriswell but the census pieces always name Lakenheath as his birth place.
Can anyone help?

Hello Katie, I have only just read your message on rootschat about Betsy Ann Gathercole. She was the sister of my greatgrandfather George David Clow Gathercole. I do have quite a bit of info on them. Do you go to Sheffield archives? I will be there next week the 11th of August if you want to meet me, but if you don't read this in time will fix something up later

Hi,
I am trying to determine the validity of a claim that the William Gathercole who married Eliz Clow, was the son of Matthew Gathercole and Mary Billman. I have William marrying a Tabitha Brown, widow. Any help would be appreciated.
This is the site where I saw the claim.

Note if you look closely at the Wedding Certificate the father is John, and his birth would have been c1819 not 1813.
