I saw a post on another Family Tree Message Board yesterday and want to warn people to be carefull. It concerns the Family Tree Software package Who Do You Think You Are - Family Tree Maker.
With what it says the package includes a 14 day free trial to Ancestry.com. This person did the free trial but decided not to subscribe. They have just got her Credit Card statement and £199.95 has been taken from their account by TGN Ancestry.
They have telephoned them and hopefully is being credited.
If anyone has got this package or decides to do one of the many free trials that are on the net PLEASE READ THE SMALL PRINT AND TERMS AND CONDITIONS.

That is pretty standard. If you have to enter Credit Card details when signing up for a trial it always means they will take the money at the end if you don't cancel. You must physically opt out and preferably don't wait until the last minute to do so.

Yes I realise this is what happens but I thought I would warn people, there are a lot of new people starting on their Family Tree and might not realise you have to cancel.

Oh my !!! this person actually gave THEM her credit card details just for a trial period download, wow. That stinks of a catch,no one should ever give card details to a site.Unless its a shop on line one,and you have used it before as said
READ ALL THE SMALL PRINT. Websites don't charge for trial offers.I have one at the moment for 30 days."Tune up" but i didn't have to give any personnel info,i would not have tried it if i personnel info was required first.I do like the program but i think it is American not sure.If they don't except a cheque i don't want it ;D

Hi,
Ceila It's standard for Ancestry, there is no catch. You need to give them your credit card details for a free trial , they do not charge your credit card within the free trial period, and they do not charge your credit card if you cancel your trial in time _ BUT you must cancel it before, or on the "free trial time limit" is up or they will charge your credit card for an on going subscription after that 14 days
Custard pot, I don't think the person should have any trouble getting a refund if he/she explains the situation to ancestry and asks them if they could cancel the subscription, and refund their credit card ; I now subscribe to ancestry, but a few years ago I took out a 14 day free trial with them and didn't cancel it in time. They charged my credit card, so I wrote them an email explaining that I had canceled it on the given date ( which was bit of a fib, I was actually one or two days late ) - I explained as I was in Australia there is obviously a time difference between the two countries and had cancelled on time.
They refunded my money no problem at all.
Kind regards :)

As well as being standard to ancestry, from my own experience and comments from other RootsChatters they will refund if you explain the situation.
