Title: Alston Gravestones
Post by: Adamand on Monday 14 January 08 20:27 GMT (UK)
Hi. I ventured out of Co Durham and collected what gravestone inscriptions that I could from St Augustines, parish church of Alston. Although the graveyard is kept in very good condition the gravestones are in a very poor condition. I think it must be a combination of the poor quality stone and the
exposure to harsh weather conditions. Here are the surnames that were readable. Milburn,Craig,Gill?,Wilson,Fair,Carrick/Garrick?,Walton,Bell,Little,
Stagg,Walton,Cooper,Hodgson,Smith,Snowdon,Ridley,Vipond,Westmoreland,
Borrow,Laws,Bullickk,Hewitson,Harrison,Friend,Dickenson,Rowle.

Hi Adam

Can you give me the details for the Walton's please.

Hello Jay. Here it is.:-Here lies the body of Gilbert Walton of Gallagill who departed this life ye 9 day of March 1732 aged 46 years. Mat: son of Tho Bell of Gal: died 17th of Decb 1746. age 10 years.
I have typed it as it was shown on the stone other than the name Bell. That was Bel with the other L being above the name. It looks like the mason misspelt the Bell name and had to add the L later and that was the only place he had to put it.

Jay,

I have a few Waltons in Alston myself. I have the full transcription of the Alston Gravestones, there a lot of Waltons among them though as Adam says a lot of the stones are virtually unreadable. If you can give me some names & dates I will take a look for you.

Hello,
Do you have any Simpsons, Watsons or Renwicks please?  I'd be interested in Bell too, if possible.
Best wishes,
Jackie

Hello Jackie. I do not have any for Simpson,Watson or Renwick.
Maybe Terry will have a look to see what he has got?
There is another stone for Jay that may be of use:-
To the memory of Mary, sister of William Walton of Raise who died at Skelgill
Oct the 25th 1751 aged 23.
Also Ann, the daughter of William Walton who died at Raise Sep the 23rd (looks like  1795) after that the stone is unreadable.

Hi all

I'm stuck with my Walton's about 1810 at the mo so the 1700's are a bit off yet so will leave these until (if) I manage to get any further.

But if Terry doesn't mind looking any Thomas', Elizabeth's & Utrick's might help me get unstuck.  ???

7 Feb 1826 Thomas SIMPSON to Jane Hardy

Gravestone inscription:
William SIMPSON of Alston, died 1 April 1844 aged 13.

Sorry no 20th Century stuff. I don't know where burials would have taken place in 1940, there is an old SIMPSON grave at the nearby Kirkhaugh Church.

I would recommend that you look at the North Pennine Ancestors site http://www.northpennineancestors.co.uk/Index.htm it is used by a lot of knowledgable  people.

Hi Jacky

There's a separate cemetery at the south end of the town, some way from the church.  I would imagine the later burials were there.

Link to aerial photo of the cemetery http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=54.808419&lon=-2.441665&z=19.5&r=0&src=ggl

(zoom out to see its position relative to the town - the church is close to the town centre)

14 Nov 1822 Thomas SIMPSON to Elizabeth Kidd
Sorry no 20th Century stuff. terry

Terry, thank you very much for this.  I think the Kidds will be mine - ironically, through marriage to my Watsons (of Renwick) not to the Simpsons.  Unfortunately, I don't know if I've got earlier Simpsons in Alston.  My g-grandfather moved there from Renwick where he'd married Margaret Watson but I believe he's from Morland originally.  The question is whether it's his Simpson family who moved out to Renwick and Alston before him or if he's completely unrelated.
Back to the drawing board...  :-\

Hi Geoff,  that map is astonishing!  I think that's the cemetary that I went to last year - unfortunately, I didn't know Isaac's d.o.death then or that he wasn't originally from Alston so only looked at the earlier headstones.  I'll be back later in the year and will find him then.

Thank you,

Title: Re: Alston Gravestones
Post by: Adamand on Sunday 04 January 09 13:43 GMT (UK)
Hello Aja. Here is the inscription for the single Borrow gravestone:-

In memory of Thomas Borrow of Hartley Burn, who died November/8/1841? aged 59 years.
Also Mary his wife, who died at Monkland in Ayrshire April/9/1844 aged 54 years.
Also Betsy, Mary, Jane, Isabella, George, Thomas and John, sons and daughters of the above who died at Jarrow.
Also John his brother, who died at Alston August/3/1846 aged 67 years.
Also Ann, wife of John Borrow, who died August/5/1853 aged 62 years.

This is the only graveyard that I have done in Cumberland most of my work is from Weardale in Co Durham.

I noticed that there is one 1790 ish Borrow gravestone in West Auckland , Co Durham
(Thought I would mention it in case it may be of interest.)

Hello Aja. Yes you can have the inscription but you need to put your request on the Durham board.
I do not want to confuse anybody by putting Co Durham inscriptions on the Cumberland board.
I think the last posting for West Auckland was 27th December so it is easy to find.
There is another gravestone for Lanchester. Again if you want that one use the Lanchester link

have the following family in Alston/Garrigall, and wondering if you have burial info for them.

Thomas Ritson -  b Kirkosward

John Vipond mar Margaret Harrison -  from Garrigal and Alston

Christopher Harrison died 25 dec 1713 Alston

and his wife married 13/5/1703

Grace Walton, Alston

Hello Mary. The Walton inscriptions have already been posted (see posting number 10)
Here is a vipond inscription for Alston:-
To the memory of John Vipond, who died July/5/1758 aged 82 years.
followed by a long verse.

There are 6 Vipond gravestones for Garrigill.

I first posted the surname list on March/8/08. So if you go to that posting and put your request on the Garrigill thread I will post them

There are also 2 Harrison gravestones but they are not as early as your request.

The Garrigill grave condition are not very good because they are all affected by the dreaded lichen.

Thought I might add my Alston brick wall here... Looking for Hannah Bailes born c1800 in Alston (according to her one birthplace mention in census returns). She moved to Liverpool and married Ralph Johnson Sedgwick. She died 1856. I have found evidence of a John & Joseph Bailes from Alston of the same generation. I also found a marriage between Caleb bailes & Nancy Teasdale, occurring a couple of years after Hannah's estimated birth.

If anyone has access to more Alston records than is available online, I'd really appreciate the help

Post by: Candolim_Imp on Tuesday 24 March 09 19:12 GMT (UK)
Sorry, have now found Hannah... I expected IGI's soudex to include likely variants of Bailes, but a search for Bales threw up other results. I have now found Hannah Bailes (baptised Bales) born 1798, daughter of Jacob Bales & Sarah Elliott. Though Jacob's baptism isn't listed, the birth names of his firstborn children indicate that he was nson of John Bailes & Hannah Little (John & Hannah's other children also had very biblical names).

If anyone has anything useful from Alston on any of these people, I'd be very grateful

I have the full transcription of the Alston Gravestones

Terry, I don't know how easy it is to look these up, but if you are able/willing, I have INDIANs who died in Alston. Elizabeth, Margaret, and Susan died in 1836, 1833, and 1831 respectively, but I suspect there are quite a few more (or shall I say I *hope* there are). Thank you.

Adam, I notice you don't have the name INDIAN listed. Were there a lot of headstones that are now illegible? I cannot visit, so I've no idea what the cemeteries are like. Also, in visiting cemeteries, do you know if many graves are unmarked? I've visited many in the US that are in terrible condition, and others where the stones have simply become worn over time; also, in some, there are few marked graves, in others mostly marked, and that changes over time with more in place today than 100 or even 50 years ago. Thank you.
Title: Re: Alston Gravestones
Post by: Adamand on Friday 03 April 09 19:08 BST (UK)
Hello Laurie. Yes, most of the headstones in the graveyard are unreadable.
I think it is because they were made if a poor type of stone of that area that did not weather very well.
I did not see any Indian gravestones although there may have been some once upon a time.
As for the Forster stones! I have posted inscriptions for Foster at Lanchester post 121, Etherley post 14, Willington post 1, Tow law post 45, Crook post 35.
There are  more at other graveyards so I think you have problems.
One problem that you will have is between FORSTER/FOSTER
Here is an example from Brancepeth:-
In memory of Elizabeth, daughter of John and Mary FORSTER of Brandon, who died September/28/1834 aged 18 years.
Also the above John FOSTER who died November/24/1835 aged 52 years.
So Foster and Forster mistake on the same gravestone.

Hi Adam, and thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to tell me a little more of the cemetery's condition. As for Forster, I noticed right off in the census that I was going to have a problem, and you've just confirmed it for me! There are so many of them, and with Foster tossed into the mix, it gets a lot more complicated.
Title: Re: Alston Gravestones

Laurie..
I can agree with Adam that there are no (readable) enscriptions for Indian in Alston & I have looked at the other graveyards in the area….. Nenthead & Carrigill & there are none there either. I also looked at the pre civil registration marriages in Alston & again none, though this was only Church of England so any marriages could have been in another Church. There were 2 Church of England baptisms, William 9 July 1813 & Margaret 12 July 1815 both of Thomas & Susannah Indian. I can recall seeing them on the census, I presume you have all that information.

Are you aware that images of the Bishops Transcripts for Alston Parish are on the new LDS pilot site?
