Can someone help me.
I have a person in my family tree called Angelina Wood. She was born in 1842 in Bradden, Northamptonshire. Her mother was Mary Anne Wood who was born in 1822 in Bradden Northamptonshire.
Now for some reason i have Angelina's father down as being Thomas Wood born in 1826 in Bradden Northamptonshire. However, this is actually Mary Anne's brother.
I've done a bit of searching on familysearch.org and i know that John maycock is named on Angelina's christening records as being the father. Now here's the confusion.
Mary Anne did marry John Maycock but not until 1842. Now would I be correct in assuming that he is the father. I'm not trying to cover up some incest as I can't find in my notes where I got Thomas as the father in the first place. I'm just trying to make sure I have it correct.
Can anyone help.

The IGI has her listed as ch. 1842 but born before, Have you found her or her parents on any census to asertain thier correct d.o.b. ???
It could well be that Maycock was her father but he may have been a minor therefore she could not take his name at birth as they were not married.
-
She's on the 1851 & 1861 census as being born in 1842. Both of these her and her mother are living with her grandparents.
-
On the 1851 Braddon it gives her mother Mary Ann Wood as the unmarried daughter of J ames and Elizabeth Wood.
Mary Ann is 28 and Angelina 9 so she was very young when she was born.
I cannot see her birth record in 1842 in complete index's.
Mary Anne did marry John Maycock but not until 1842
I suspect this is an error
Marriage took place in Sept. q 1853 Towcester, 3b - 39

Hi to you both.
If you go to Mary Taylor's site it list the family you are looking for.
If you look at Family Trees on the left hand side of the page it will direct you to the Surname Page.

On the 1851 John Maycock is aged 27 a servant so he would have only been 19 at the time of Angelina's birth.

There is no birth registered in the complete index's 1842 under Angelina Wood or Maycock so it was probably not registered as she was illegitimate.
I wonder if you have a marriage cert for Angelina ??? very often illegitimate women gave either a brothers name or grandfathers name as thier father or sometime even a ficticious one. I have one of these myself ::)
I doubt very much if there was any incest in this particular case.

Wow!! Thanks for the help especially the link. On that site it's got her as being born around 1838. i wonder if that is nearer the truth.

Hi Sandy,
She must be on them as she is on the IGI ;)
-
I think I've figured it out. Looking on Mary's website for John Maycock, he was married at the time. He got Married in 1836. Mary has got him down as being married twice before he married Mary Anne Wood.
-
In that case its a different John Maycock on the 41 and 51 census's :-\
He must have been older
-
On the 1861 & 1871 Census, John Maycock is down as being born in around 1815/1816 which would make him around 27 when Angelina was born.
Also on Mary's website she has a death record for Angelina which would match up with her being born in 1842.
-
I stand corrected :) I was getting confused with John Wood ;D Mary Annes brother.
-
I heard back from Mary Taylor this morning.
This is her reply
Angelina appears to have been born when her mother, Mary Ann, was just 18,
and a single parent, and brought up alongside her aunts and uncles in her
grandparents house.
It would be very unusual in these circumstances for there to be anything
in writing anywhere about her father. If Mary Ann's parents had disowned
her, and she had had Angelina in the Workhouse, there may have been
affiliation proceedings, as the Workhouse tried to recover some of the
costs of looking after mother and baby, but apart from that there is
rarely any paperwork. She clearly didn't have the baby in the Workhouse,
as there is no birth certificate.
It is also unlikely that Mary Ann's later partner, John Maycock, is the
father of the baby. The father will have been either unable to marry Mary
Ann at the time of Angelina's birth, or no-one knew who he was but Mary
Ann, and she wasn't telling! Either way, it is very unlikely that she
later married the father - he would have been associated with a very
unhappy time of her life
Just thought I'd let you all know.
Thanks for all your help

Hi Treenie,
I also have Angelina & her family in our family tree so we may have a connection somewhere down the line.
Now there is only one problem with me being able to give you any further info as at xmas hubby managed to delete all my genealogy reseach from my P.C (including all backups).
So i am having to start again using all the paper info i have but with over 30,000 people to redo it is taking me a little while, i know i have Angelina's etc info somewhere its just a case of finding it.
once i have i will pm you and we can see if or where there is a connection
