I am hoping someone can help me with this, but I think it is really a longshot.
I am trying to find the birth of Robert Carlos Hardy, who according to the 1930 American Census was born in Aberdeen about 1887.
Family lore is that his parents were diplomats in the West Indies and then in America.
We do NOT know anything more about Robert except that his children were born in New Jersey and that he died in America in 1933.

Hi Eveline,
I am not a World Ancestry member so can't view but perhaps someone will for you- I found reference for
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 Robert Carlos Hardy This should confirm his birth place for you.
Name: Robert Carlos Hardy Index to declaration of intent for Naturalization New York County 1907-1924 :)
-
Thank you for that. I am not a member, but I think a distant cousin is and I have written to her asking if she would look this up for me.
I do appreciate you looking for me.

There is only one Robert Hardy birth registered in Scotland between 1885 & 1890 on Scotlandspeople
He was born in LUNNASTING, SHETLAND in 1885.
Not sure if he's your man or not.
-
Thank you for your reply. It doesn't sound like my Robert Hardy as Shetland is a long long way from Aberdeen. However, I will keep this in mind just in case.

Hi Eveline
Do you know the name of Robert's wife in America? There is this marriage entry in Manhattan:
Hardy Robert C
Date of Marriage: Mar 22 1928 Manhattan
Certificate No. 7293
Bride's name: Perdew Alice G
When searching for births for Robert in Scotland, it is probably worthwhile searching the surname as Hardie as well, a more common variant. There is one entry coming up for births in Aberdeen area for a Robert HARDIE (without initial C for a middle name) between 1883-89:
1888 HARDIE ROBERT M KEMNAY /ABERDEEN 207/00 0029
From the 1891 Census, this Robert's parents look to have been a William (farm servant) and Janet ~ doesn't bode well for a diplomat's family....
I would probably look to America for confirmation of his parents' names (Robert's marriage/death certs) and then work back from there.
Have you looked for Robert and family in any of the earlier American censuses? You might want to put up a new post on the emigrants to the US board here on RootsChat where people with better access to these resources may be able to help:

I've just had a look. It doesn't say very much:

Aged 36, Clerk, British, Residence - Port of Spain. Father R H Hardy Colonial Hospiltal, Port of Spain
So born circa 1880

I wonder if this is R H Hardy in 1881

Born 1856 Barbados, West Indies - Lieutant In XI Hussars married no sign of wife and possibly RC Hardy Lancaster Lodge Census Place London, Middlesex, England

Hi Irret ;) I was just looking at this one (Baby Mary skills coming to mind!)
Eveline, your Robert looks to have been born in Nova Scotia according to the ship's manifest SS Marval 1916. Have at the Ellis Island site for full details www.ellisisland.org. It's a two page manifest (pgs. 0679/80 - they are the wrong way round, 680 should be first then 679). There's quite a lot of info on it.
Regards.

Thought this one was made for you :) Scotland - Diplomat- and a New Jersey connection, yes happy days ;D
-
Thank you to everyone who replied to me. I never expected this much information it is brilliant.
I have checked out the Ellis Island site and agree that it looks as though he was born 1880.
The 1887 was from the 1930 american census which said he was aged 42. We know that is right as he is with Mildred and five of the children at that time.
I am not sure about the marriage in 1928. Mildred had a son in 1927 a daughter in 1929, a son in 1930 and another daughter in 1932.
Robert died according to family lore in 1933 in New Jersey and then Mildred and the children came home.
The Barbados link to the West Indies is interesting.
As is the 1881 census. I cannot open Ancestry.com but I can look and found that census there. I have asked my cousin to open it for us.
I also notice that Robert H born 1856 Barbados in the 1871 census, this time living in Rutland, so I have asked Mary to open that one as well.
Once again that you for all help and yes irret this one is made for me. I am thoroughly enjoying trying to sort out this little knot.

I found the 1881 census on http://www.familysearch.org :) which is free.

Eveline
If wife's name was Mildred, then the ref for a 1928 marriage to an Alice is not relevant.
I don't know if you have yet noticed, but on the 1916 ship's manifest, Robert shows as already married (first marriage or had he married Mildred by now?)

Extracted birth entry for Robert snr ?:
ROBERT HENRY HARDY Christening: 20 DEC 1855 Saint Michael, Barbados, Caribbean
Parents: ROBERT HARDY and MARY ELIZABETH BOND

Thanks to you all for responding again.
Yes Irret, I managed to find it afterwards, by putting born Barbados in the search engine. It just said he was with a cook and a servant, I couldn't find Robert Carlos - probably looking in the wrong place. Will have another look in a minutes.
I also looked on Ancestry.com. I cannot open the files, but I can look to see if they are there and found Robert Henry on the 1871 in Rutland. Gosh these Hardys get everywhere. I have asked my cousin to open that one.
Thank you Monica for finding Robert Henry's birth. I know have a father for Robert Carlos and one set of Grandparents.
Family lore was that Robert was previously married before Mildred, so obviously that was before 1916. No I hadn't noticed it, thank you for bringing it to my attention. So it looks as though he might have married either in the West Indies or Nova Scotia.
Mary lives in the States and can usually find her way around their archive system, but so far has been unable to find a death.
Thanks once again.

Irret and I spent a long time researching together in New Jersey for a marriage and death in the county. Our sympathies for your cousin Mary - it's sooo hard!

Hi Gadget and Irret
Loved the little exchange, it made me laugh.
I have clicked on the link to see what was there and I have now sent it to Mary to open for me. Thank you.
I have actually gone on the the Barbados mailing list to ask if someone is able to confirm the IGI details regarding Robert's father. Also asked if there was a marriage index where it was easy to look up the marriage of his mother and father.
As my cousin Mary (a Canadian living in Maine) had never heard of Slandall or Slandale in Nova Scotia, I have also written to the Halifax list (only big city I knew in Nova Scotia) to ask if they could point me in the right direction as to where to find the town.
I appreciate all you have done for me, especially the laughs.

Hi Eveline
It would probably be worthwhile just double checking his birth place (in the absence of confirmation of a Nova Scotia birth for him) on a number of other sources.
Now, he arrived in the US in 1916. Going by his info on the ship's manifest, it was his first visit. If he remained in the US, I wonder if he fought in WW1. If so, you may be able to find his WW1 army card which would include his birth place I believe.
Also, you have him in the 1930 US census in NJ. Have you (Mary) tried to find him in the 1920 Census?
Regards.

Hi I have never heard of a Robert Carlos Hardy before but I have got his father in my family tree -Robert Henry Hardy who married Lily Deane Tanner and whose parents were Robert Hardy and Mary Elizabeth BOND. In my records they had a son called Henry Harmer Cyril Hardy born about 1879, who did cross the Atlantic to New York in 1919. He married in 1901 but I'm not sure of his wife's name. I have more of the Hardy family history dating back to La Rochelle in about 1692. They were a Huguenot family who first went to London, then to Dublin, then Cork and became involved in the sugar trade with Barbados.

Hi Jenny
I would have loved to have contacted your direct, but Rootsweb deleted your e.mail address.
This seems a bit daft, but my e.mail address was compromised back in 2008 and I changed it, therefore I did not get the reply you made to me in the August, so sincere apologies for that.
In the meantime I have a little more about Robert Carlos Hardy, he travelled to New York in 1904 and when asked said he had been there before in 1902. In 1904 he says age 22 (1882) He also was at Ellis Island in 1916 age 16 (1880)but there has already been talk of that before. He gave his father as RH Hardy who was a Clerk in Trinidad.
Robert signed up in WW1 for the Gordon Highlanders 30 Aug. 1917 and I have his war record. It looks as though he did not fight said in 1918 that he had a weak heart and gave names of two physicians who attended him in Trinidad before he signed up. He gave his employers before signing up as Trinidad Shipping and Trading Company in Port of Spain, Trinidad and his history shows him as being born in Port of Spain and he was transferred to the reserves in September 1919. It does not give his date of birth, at least I haven't found it. He travelled back to New York from Liverpool on 14 May 1919 to stay with Mrs Johnson 70W 131st Street, Manhattan and this is where he was on the 1920 census.
I have found that he was married before in 1905 Trinidad to Ellen Gouveia and that he had one daughter.
Apart from that I have details of Robert Henry Hardy he was at Uppingham School from 1870 - 1873 His school roll record reads as follows "Hardy, Robert H (E) Nov. 1855. Son of R. Hardy, Knockeven House, Queenstown. Queenstown is now Cobh in Co. Cork.
Here also appears (as well as Harmer Brabazon Bond Hardy) to have been a daughter Louisa, but I cannot find anything else out about her.
It would be nice to actually exchange what information we have as I do like to get things right, but obviously Rootsweb automatically deletes e.mail addresses, so lets try in the long way all lower case with an @ in the middle and no spaces. Please note it is a moderator who deletes the email addresses, it is not done automatically! I have removed your email address accordingly.

Hi this is to Eveline.
Wow what a lot to catch up on. I had a notification about your post today.
Now I will have to go back to my tree to see where your man fits in.
Now I have got another tree The Belling Family Tree, which is by lacrosseny and it has got robert Carlos hardy on it. If that is you Eveline then we can communicate via ancestry.
The tree has the wife and child of Robert Carlos on it.
If he was the son of Robert Henry Hardy then that wasn't known in the main body of the family.
If you are on ancestry then I can give you permission to see my tree as its a closed one.
There are also children for the daughter of Robert Carlos shown on the tree. She was Gladys Hermina Hardy born in Trinidad and Tobago 24 February 1898. She married Edward Emanuel Pinheiro. The tree shows four children so there are probably descendants living today in the US.
Henry Harmer Ceriol Hardy had an interesting life. I have written all about it in my Hardy history - which I call The Hardy Compilation. He had three wives and three children by a lover.
At the moment I am writing about the other branches of the families in Barbados. They were connected to some really interesting people.
I have discovered that Camilla (the wife of Prince Charles ) and I have a common ancestor called Thomas Maxwell who lived in Barbados. Its amazing what you can discover through investigating the family history.
I have all the details you need about Robert Henry Hardy and his wife Lilie Deane Tanner. I have researched the family back to La Rochelle, France in the 1600s. There is also a large branch in America, mostly in Louisiana.
So if you can get online onto ancestry then you can see my tree and also leave your address there and I could tell you more. I think you can leave your email there.
That's all for now.

Hi Jenny
Lovely to know that you read my message, I was very dubious after all that time.
Unfortunately I have let my subscription to Ancestry.co.uk lapse, but I am still on there as a free member and I know that I can view other trees if the owner gives permission for me to do so. My husband's cousin Margaret has allowed me to view her tree as have other members of the family.
I think I said I was researching on behalf of a cousin Mary and she is extremely interested in the Hardy family, she mentioned something about a tree on ancestry, I wonder if that was yours.
The tree you speak of is for Robert Carlos Hardy and his wife Ellen Pinheiro with their only daughter Gladys.
If you look at Robert in the 1830 census, you will see he is living with 'wife' Mildred and children Hope, Carlton, Robert, Rosa, Mary and Stanley. I have not been able to find the marriage to Mildred, hence in inverted commas. I know Robert died c 1933 and that Mildred came back to England at that time. Mildred was born Mildred Bartlett, daughter of George Bartlett, George was the son of George Bartlett and Harriett Bennett. It is the Bennett family I am related to.
I have details of Robert Carlos's war record and I know he went back and forth between Trinidad and Ellis Island. I also have his Ellis Island record from when he left England after WW1.
I know a little about Robert Henry such as he was at school at Uppingham and a lieutenant in the Hussars and was promoted to Captain in 1884. I also know his father was Peruvian consul in Barbados. I would love to know more about the family as I am putting this together on a family tree and then printing it out for the other Bennett clan.
What is really bugging us, is the fact that we cannot find a death for Robert, or for his son Stanley and daughter Mary, they must have died in the USA as they did not come back home with Mildred. That would have had to be late 1932 or very early 1933 as Mildred arrived back in London in April 1933.
I would love to know more about the French connection and as I said, I can give you loads of details about the Bartlett/Bennetts.
I am on Genes Reunited as well. If I put Robert Carlos on there - haven't so far, we might be able to get in touch that way.

Hello, this message is for jenny if she still monitors this board.
You mentioned lacrosseny and the Belling Family tree in connection to Robert Hardy. That tree on ancestry is mine.
I am a direct descendent of Robert and Ellen Hardy. They were my great great grandparents.
I'd love to be able to review your tree on ancestry and learn more about the past history of Robert H Hardy and beyond!!
I have connected with Eveline and we have been able to share some wonderful information!!
