I was wondering if anyone can help me find where New Mills is in Northumberland? I have found out my great grandfather may have possibly been born there in and around 1886. Also can anyone tell me of which churches are nearby so I can try and search. I have looked on the census for George but to no avail...any help with any of the above would be fantastic
Cheers

New Mills is approx 3 miles from the English Border Town of Berwick on Tweed and approx 500yds from Scotland and the border county of Berwickshire
found this by googling
Have you checked Scottish census for George?

Would you like to give more details of George, his parents names etc, and why you think he was born in New Mills, and we'll help you look.
Do you have his marriage certificate with his father's name and occupation etc?

I have a marriage certificate from 1911, where George Uren Married Margaret Harle in Houghton le Spring, County Durham. His Father is named as being 'George Uren' as well, his Fathers occupation was that of a domestic coachman and George (son) was a groom, living in the Hetton area. I have searched everywhere for him using his age of 25 years in 1911 as a starting point. He was also killed in the Great war in 1917, listed on the CWGC as G Uren. All I have of New Mills Northumberland is because of something a family member has told me, this information isn't first hand either. His medal card I got also told me that he informed the military he was born Northumberland, Newcastle! But his surname is popular in Cornwall, so after years of searching I am still no further forward.
Any help would be brilliant
Cheers Chappie!

It's quite a mystery, isn't it? Of course he could have been born in Cornwall, as you say, lots of them there. The only ones I can find in Durham/Northumberland are Urren, but no George of the right age.

Chappie,
Yes, according to the Surname Prfiler web site, the name Uren is exclusively from Cornwall... centred around Truro...and fairly rare (for 1881 it was England/Wales 3418th most numerous name)
On 1881 census (probably too soon for George junior) there were 23 George Urens.. not one was connected to coaches/horses !
New Mills..... On Census 1901 there were over 4000 folk born in/at New Mills... but there were several places called New Mills spread throughout the English Counties...
There was/is a New Mills in Cornwall..(in fact three of them ! ) all close to... Truro... Alas but no good candidates for either of the Georges on censuses.
Where did George enlist for WW1 ?
I cannot see any record of births from a Uren/Harle couple !
What was the name and occuipation of Margaret's dad ?
The surname Harle is almost exclusive to County Durham... and it is even more rare than Uren... 5257th in rank of surnames .
Do you have her on Census 1901 ?

George Uren enlisted into the Royal Field Artillery in Newcastle upon Tyne, this is something I have been told, not researched. It has been mentioned about Newmills of Northumberland being his birth place, but to be honest apart from his marriage in 1911, and his death in 1917 any census records from 1901 back have me baffled, I've tried a million ways to spell this name and have come up with nothing. I'm now trying to do a search for his birth via parish records as his name is not mentioned in the BMD, a George Uren was born in 1885 in Falmouth near the year of the person I'm looking for but he diead a few years later so it's not him unfortunately.
George Uren's father was George (as if we wouldn't of guessed) no idea about his mother or other siblings. They were married in Hetton le Hole, Durham. At the time of the marriage he was living in Station Road Hetton le Hole. Both he and his Father were Coach man. I've noticed that Uren is a very popular name in Cornwall and have tried searching about there...Any help would be great.

There used to be a One-Name Study on the Uren surname, run by someone who is sadly now deceased. The name is no longer registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies, so I don't know what happened to all his research material, but the Society of Genealogists has some material in its library that may turn out to be useful to you.
The name originated in Cornwall, but spread out mainly to mining areas; as the Cornish tin mines were declining, the coal mines were expanding elsewhere, so skilled Cornish miners were in demand. The spelling of the surname varied over time, often as a result of regional accents.

Chappie,
Remember you thought he was born in Newcastle from info from his medal card etc. I have just received a medal card but it does not reveal any birthplace !

Sorry Micheal,
Looking at his medal card when I was writing the text to you. It was from the web site Military Genealogy where his details of enlistment are. It mentions Newcastle as his place of birth and his place of enlistment but the New Mills comes from a document a relative has, his army records, where it mentions New Mills as a place of birth, Northumberland! Sorry about that, I've seen his medal card and there isn't much on it. He never got a pension so he's not listed there either. There are no parents names mentioned on any documents so we're at a loss...I'll keep searching it's bound to come to light some time!
Cheers
