Hi Ann,
what else does it say on the birth certificate.
"c/o Der Postmeister" doesn't really help. It's the equivalent of saying c/o The Post Office", a "post restante" address i.e. not living here, but in the area for a while, so you collect your post here now and then.

Bob

Hi Ann,
If I understood you correctly, Wilhelmina Becker was born in 1865/66, probably somewhere in Lower Saxonia or Bremen. Syke is a town in Lower Saxonia, County Diepholz.
There are no civil records from before 1870/71 in this area, so you have to stick with church records.
To find the church record stating her birth, you need to know the religious confession. Also, you should be able to determine her place of birth as close as possible.

Hi Ann,
without any more details, I am afraid there is not a lot you can do.
BECKER is a common name in Germany, along with variations Bäcker, Baecker, Bekker, Baekker, etc, and Fritz (or more likely Friedrich) and Wilhelmina are also common names.
There is no equivalent website to the freeBMD or GRO birth indexes in Germany.

Bob

If she was born 1864/1865, her father would probably have been in his 70s or 80s by 1920. Berlin-Bob, how much luck would she have if she wrote to Syke to ask for a death certificate for Fritz Becker, without an exact date?

thank you its worth a try ,something that i hadn't thought of doing.i'm sure at that age he wasn't moving house that often.its worth a try as i do have an address for him in 1920 maybe that would help with a search for a death.
i am really determined to try to find them.i really enjoy doing my research into my ancestors
i would go to the end of the earth to get a positive result
thank you

Hi,
yes it's worth a try, but it's very thin. :(
At the moment we don't know when or where he died; All we have is a Post Restante address, which implies that although he was in or near Syke in 1920, he wasn't a permanent resident.
Good luck,
Bob

could you tell me how much info the german death cert has . is it much the same as our english death cert
i'm not sure how this will help me tracing fritz
ann

Hello Ann,
as Fritz (Friedrich a name who was used mostly in Prussia) gives a Post Restante address it's possible that he was on his way to England. He might just have stayed in Syke to wait for a passage.
Do you know this site? http://biggislist.genealogy.net/ , it's also in English. You can search some Ortsbücher on-line (on-line heritage books).
Good luck, mz
