Title: do you believe in ghosts
Post by: elaine447 on Friday 11 January 08 02:10 GMT (UK)
does anyone believe in ghosts
my son was playing in dad's house one day when he asked me who the lady on the stairs was
thinking he was talking about the neighbours across the street I told him who they were
his reply was no not them stairs and pointing inside the house said those ones
I never thought anymore about it until a few years later my dad brought out some of the old
pictures and as we were going through them my son suddenly went quiet and then out of the blue
said that was the lady on the stairs
it was a picture of my mum who had died six months before he was born
a few years later my daughter moved into her first flat I took my son down to stay the night with her
but he just said I cannot stay in this house and walked out
cousin who used to live in the same close told me a little boy had fallen down the stairs in that close and died
vivid imagination or spooky

Your son has a very open mind Elaine....he's one of the lucky ones inasmuch as he has a mother who will listen to him and not ridicule him.......there are certainly things we will never understand out there.

And Yes, I believe in 'ghosts'

I don't know whether I believe in ghosts or not, I thought I was sceptical until an experience I had a couple of months ago.

It was a dull, dark October afternoon and I was in a local graveyard hunting for one of my family.  I had also gone there to photograph a gravestone which has a Jonthan Harmer Terracotta on it.  I walked round and round and couldn't find one Funnell buried there and was getting a bit frustrated.  Found the terracotta and took some photographs.  I was bent over the gravestone and as I stood up I glanced over to a large Yew Tree in the corner of the Graveyard.

There was someone standing under the tree that I saw briefly.  Looked again and they were gone.  I noticed some graves I had not seen before under the tree and began walking over.  There was noone to be seen, I was totally alone but yes when arrived at the six graves under the tree, there they were my Funnell family!

Now I am sure it was a trick of the light or something but I swear it was a person I saw standing there.  A friend asked me if I was spooked and strangely I wasn't in the slightest, in fact anything but.

Well that's my story, make of it what you will.

Well my son very calmly informed me he had been talking to his grandad and gave details of the conversation which led me to believe he probably had been talking to my dad - who died before I got married as had my husband's dad.  I think children are probably more sensitive and have more time to listen.  By the way my ggrandfather was a spiritualist healer with 2 'contacts' who apparently 'appeared' to my mother and sibling on a regular basis so maybe there is a degree of genetic susceptibility too.   I have never to my knowledge met a ghost but there are many things we don't understand yet so who knows?

I have chills. I definitely believe in something, but I haven't really experienced anything like this. I wish I would for a few branches, but I think my brickwalls want to stay hidden.  :-\

I don't like admitting a belief in ghosts, but some circumstances can spook the heck out of you.

I work part-time in the kitchen of an old peoples' home, and have done for the last 5 years. Needless to say, there have been quite a few deaths in that time as we have large capacity. There have been some spooky encounters in my time there. There is one particular wing which is said to be really haunted. The 'ghost' up there tends to target new members of staff for some strange reason.
There are only two occassions where I personally have been affected. A few years ago I was visiting with a youth group (in my holy days) singing. As I was standing, I kept feeling something poking my side. I was at the edge, no one was beside me. This went on for the entire night.
More recently, the cook and me were standing preparing food. From the corner of my eye I saw something fleeting across the other side of the kitchen. I thought it was my work mate but when I looked up, there was nobody there. I asked the Cook if she had seen something at the other side of the kitchen (which is basically behind a small work station) and she said she had also. Both of us were so puzzled that we checked behind the work station to make sure it wasn;t my workmate mucking about, but there was no one there. So that was spooky...

Elaine, your post gave me the shivers.

We recently visited Hever Castle in Kent.
When we entered the main hall, my young son immediately said did some die in here. My husband and I were a little startled, looked at each other in surprise and said probably, lacking any information.
I don't recall talking about anyone dying at the castle. It could be that he put two and two together and decided castles were where people died at some time. I'll keep an open mind.

I did wake up in bed one night to smell cigarette smoke. The windows were shut and no-one smokes in our house. My Dad died aged 50, when I was 16 and he was a smoker. I like to think he was just checking up on me!

I have always believed in the spirit side of death but my oh had always thought I was making up things as he was a non believer, that was until I had our third child, all was well with the pregnancy and birth so we had no reason to suspect anything wrong with our daughter but when she was 4 days old my mum ( who died when I was a child) came to both myself and my oh in a dream during the night, she told us both that she had to take our daughter with her. I woke up startled to find my oh diving out of bed to check on the baby, she had some how managed to be lying face down and as he grabbed her up we both heard a loud gasp. The doctor who came out to check her over ( she had stopped breathing for a few seconds) said that if oh hadn't picked her up in the way he did she would most probably be another cot death case. From that day on he has become a firm believer and has often thanked my mum for her warning dream, I also caught him having a quiet word the other night to her asking her to watch over me and our 5th child which is due in 2 weeks time.

Thanks everyone
the first time my son had this experience he was only about two and a half
the second he was about ten
but the reason I posted this last night was
I was sitting here myself because of meniere's I was unable to sleep everyone else had gone to bed
I thought I had dozed off and dreamt this
I was reading on of the posts on here but the laptop screen started rolling I tried to switch it off
but it wouldn't go off it just flick pages but the weird thing was it ended up on my pictures
and it was the picture of my mum I had restored on here
It didn't scare me it just made me feel as though my mum was there watching me because I wasn't
feeling very well and it was her way of telling me she was there
I am glad you baby was ok 4kni and I am sure your mum will watch over your new baby too

When I was younger we lived in an old vicarage, my dad was a builder not a vicar  though. My bedroom was on the third floor.

When I was fourteen, my friend was staying one night, and we were both sitting up in bed reading magazines.  She was sitting on the left of me, and I felt a tap on my right shoulder.  I looked up and said "What?" thinking she was messing about.  She looked at me as though I was stupid.  When I said somebody had tapped me, and she said it wasn't her, neither of us got much sleep that night :o :o

I used to see shadows up there as well in corners.  If I was coming down the stairs, I often saw a shadow halfway down the stairs, and there was nothing there when I got to it.

I would like to think that people do come back to watch over us

I am sure that there is only a thin line between this world and the next.

Some people are much more sensitive than others. One of my great aunts could have been described as a medium( for want of a better description) From a small child she used to embarrass her family by blurting out facts about neighbors. As she got older , she used her gift but as a  controlled fortune telling.

As a child I can still remember wanting to "go Home" and this world was Not where I should be.

My daughters have often experienced the presence of my Mother, often when they have problems or decisions to make.

Ghosts are ,I believe can be disturbed spirits, but more often our loved ones ,concerned about our welfare.

I can't explain it, but there is something out there.

I have on a number of occasions sensed the presence of my parents by my bedside after I have gone to bed.  Haven't seen them - just a warm presence in a glow of light, and I know they are watching over me.

The most vivid experience was a few years ago, after the father of one of my school friends died.  He was a Presbyterian minister, and a lovely, lovely man.  One evening I was out watering the garden - not thinking about him at all! - and suddenly he appeared in front of me.  He was looking at me and smiling his warm smile, and he said, "I'm keeping an eye out for you too, pet!"  Then he faded away.  These were exactly the kind of words he used, and I knew that he was watching over both his daughter and me.

hmmm I share a house with one, so yep I guess i do

OH thought I was off my tiny one until he started taking the brunt of its jokes!

so far someone has poured water on the bed, only on OH side ( and yes the kids have been threatened with death it was one of them)
cd's have gone missing only to turn up in very strange places
the worst was an old sewing needle turned up stuck in OH arm after I left the room! When he went to show me it, it had moved to the other side of the room.

Now I just yell at it to quit, things go quiet for a few months, then he tries again.
the Last threat was he will pay rent if he doesnt pack the pranks in.

We had a ghost in our house for years.

I'd see her out of the corner of my eye but as I turned she'd disappear.

My son would hear someone walking up the stairs and expect to see me appear at his bedroom door, but there was never anyone there.

I never saw the ghost clearly yet I have no doubt it was a short lady.

There has only ever been one previous owner of the house - she was a first World War widow and lived here for 50 years, with her children.

I haven't seen her for years now - I like to think she was happy with the way we were looking after her home and felt she could move on.

I don't usually tell people about this because some would think I'd lost the plot, but I swear it's true.

I believe in ghosts and have lived in many houses where I felt the presence or saw something out of the corner of my eye.  In fact if I sit at the d/room table typing on the laptop - like now - I often see something in the large mirror on the wall facing me, but only late at night. This house was only built in 1979 and no-one has died here, so I don't know where this "spirit" is coming from.

I did live in a house about 20 odd years ago where the "ghost" was decidedly unpleasant and like Mrs Tease, I used to yell at it.  When I eventually got so mad I shouted that I didn't care if he (I always assumed it was a he) didn't like me living in the house, it was too bad.  It was my house and he'd better go away.  I never had any problems after that.  Again that was  a modern house and no-one had died in it, however, every family who had lived in it moved out quite quickly, so I think there was something very spooky going on there.

I am very cynical.  I live in a house that was built in 1853 and I haven't seen a ghost.

However, a couple of years ago I was alone preparing a buffet and a female voice   right next to my ear said....

'this is nice'

It's not very profound but it wasn't a whisper, the voice was as clear as day.

I do mostly due to strange occurences. From time to time in my life usually if there is a situation regarding a close family member I will smell pipe smoke. My Grandad used to smoke a pipe. This has happened a couple of times when there has been a family death. On one occasion I attempted to phone my mum, only to find that she was trying to contact me to tell me the same thing.I find it reassuring that Grandad is still about.

A couple of years ago we lived in a really old house which was a listed building built in 1834. The day before we moved in I went up to do some cleaning. I must admit I was a little worried in case it was haunted. I took my dogs with me and let them have a good run round inside before I relaxed. Iam a coward!!  They say animals pick up on these things      Lincsbabe ;D

What about this for spooky?

I went to my mam's today, and we were sitting having a cuppa.  My mam said "oh there's something on the side for you there"  I had already seen an envelope with my name on it when I came in and thought nothing of it.  But when she said that, it suddenly reminded me of a dream I had last night.  My husband had picked up a card and opened it, he asked me what the writing was on the inside of it.  When I looked, it was a list that my mam had written with addresses and little things that she could remember, that she wanted to give me.

Anyway I said to my mam - that's broke my dream - and described it to her.  She was gobsmacked.  Inside the envelope was three pages of notes that she had written at six o'clock yesterday morning when she had woken up early.  She has told me some of it before, but there were lovely little memories and descriptions of her parents.  It must have upset her writing it, and at the end she suddenly realised that it was her dad's birthday yesterday.

Neither of us could believe that I had dreamt about her writing the notes, and she had actually done it, all on my grandfather's birthday.

I think he's reaching out and letting us know he's thinking of us.

That is another one from work.

You think that your hear someone speaking to you when you walk up the corridors, but when you turn round no one is there.

It could be anything though.

I was lying in bed one night, just dozing off, when I felt something jump up onto the bed. In a cold sweat, I looked around to see a black cat walking across the bottom of the bed.
I jumped up and banged the light on, but there was nothing there, except for small imprints where it had walked.
Even though it was nearly ten years ago, it still creeps me out thinking about it.

For as long as I can remember I have had what I call 'visitors' I don't see anything but I feel that there is a 'presence' which wakes me up. Now as this happens at night it could just be nightmares, but its always the same thing, I can feel that there is someone or something in the room. I've tried shouting at them to go away because to be quite honest it scares the bejeezus out of me when it happens, but then a few days or a few weeks later it happens again.
I'm still not convinced that its not just me having nightmares but I found out recently that my mum used to have the same thing happen to her (she didn't know until then about me as I have never spoken about it). She said that one night she was so fed up with it that she screamed at the top of her voice for them to go away (although she wasn't so polite if you know what I mean) and since then she has not had the 'visits' Unfortunately it has not worked for me!

However a few months ago I am definately convinced that my gran was with me. One of my last memories of her before she died was her giggling about something (she had a very distinctive girly giggle). I was alone in the house and heard that giggle out of nowhere. That was a nice visit.

Our house is not a really old one ... it was built about 1933ish.  But there is an older man who wears braces who wanders around at night.  He tends to spend time watching as you sleep... my eldest daughter has often woken up to see him beside her bed.

Whether he lived here or is linked to someone who did... or currently does... we don't know.  Have never seen him in a photo, so not sure how he fits in.

He's just making sure everything is okay I think.... never had a problem with him and he's really quiet and kindly.

Unlike the old lady who I used to "share" a bedroom with before I married.  I was in a share house with several others, and whenever my future husband used to come and stay the night, my bedroom door would open and then slam shut over and over again.  Turns out that the house used to belong to the Catholic Church and was a home to some Nuns many years ago.  Hmmmmmm.

When watching the TV show 'Most Haunted', I've often thought it would be a good idea to get someone with a link to past occupants to go in and 'upset' the spirits.
If the most haunted crew came to my hometown of Fraserburgh, I would insist that they take me to Fraserburgh Lighthouse to question the Hon. Henrietta Fraser. She was a snob, and would love to wind her up about her illegitimate grandchildren. That ought to provoke a response...

Dear All
I have had so many encounters - I have tried very positively to blot them  out and ignore them.  I know if I did not - it could become a lifestyle. My mother put me off - big time- she said if you looked for old Nic - he would come looking for you. So that was enough for me. I have been taught that encounters with the other side are manifestations - sounds cranky I know and my grandad always said - the dead can't hurt you but the living will. I believe humans are sensitive creatures and when they go into an area/place where someone has suffered they pick up on the chemical reaction left behind. Perhaps it happens more when one of those who suffered are a rellie with same/similar genes.

Encounters so far - just a few - and very deliberatly not looking for them!
The ones I can remember.
Age 15 - woke in midddle of night to see a woman with grey hair - very prim in a grey 1940s suit - standing by the side of my bed- looking down at me very sternly.
Buried head under blankets -she disappeared. But I can still see her now.

I work as an Estate Agent - tried to measure an empty house with a sonic beam - many empty rooms- but beam would not work - i joked with the owner who was with me - that his 'ghost' was standing in the way of the beam. The owner was not impressed.  Found out three years later from the owners partner that the house was very haunted.

Again- as an estate agent - have actually taken a photograph  of a ghost - a little old lady - who is sitting in an armchair and has vapours that melt down to the floor.  Some can see her on the photo as clear as day. Others can not see her at all.

The worst off all was witnessing a road traffic accident about 10 years ago - actually seeing at least one child casualty and another seriously injured - saw this with about 10 other people-thought now to be a mass hallucination -  little boy - curled around the wheel - and next day - nothing - no accident - no casualties - no news - no information - very wierd.  Wrote to several people about this - but all thought I was nuts. Thought to be a throw back in time that we witnessed again.

Belive you me - I absolutely try to avoid all of this. I avoid mediums. Gypsy's run straight for me when they see me. But I still believe it is all on the other side and should be left alone.

The needle story - I have heard before. A friend had a house in Devon and she kept finding needles in the woodwork ( door architraves, etc) - she filled a small toffee tin of needles in just a few weeks. Her bed frame kept moving so she sprinkled talcum powder on the floor to catch the culprit out, but the bed still moved, without footprints on the floor. A strange man came calling into her garden to talk to her little children -but she never saw him. The house was on Lock's Hill in Torquay - she always said it meant 'Warlock's Hill'

Sorry to spook you all -

Part 2 of Tales from the Crypt.

My'gorra - there are so many - and I am trying to avoid them!
There are so many I have blotted out half of them.

Rooms -  have either male or female characteristics - someone mentioned this earlier - if there is a haunting you will feel what sex it is. It may be due to a ghost - or it may be due to the persona that spent most time in the room and left his/her chemical traces behind. But don't be frightened - just ignore them - do not let them worry you- I think I am saying give them their privacy and retain your own.

Places - How about Spring Lane at Riddings, also called Nottingham Lane -this takes the prize for me as the spookiest lane I have ever seen - I am sure they practiced witchcraft there. It just knocked me in the eye.

Another Place - nearby - Junction at the bottom of Crescent Road, Selston which meets Barrows Hill, Westwood - yes it must be a burial ground - but I strongly felt that it was a gallows corner.  I said to my hubby when I moved up here - I don't like this crossroads - they used to hang people here.  Someone told me last week that they did hang people but not exactly there, but further up at the top of the hill near Church Lane.  I was amazed that this really did go on in the vicinity but I firmly belive it all happened at the bottom of the hill - not the top.

Never had any real strong feelings about any other places that I can recollect apart from these two- but I was knocked in the eye with them both.

cheshiremog you're stories are fascinating!

Particularly the one with the traffic accident.  When did that happen?
When I wa young we lived on a Scottish Island (i recently saw an old map and it said burial ground where our house was later built).  The woods behind our house were terrifying, the air was very thick if you see what I mean.  Our neighbours who already lived there had put a wooden stake in the ground as they said it stopped the negative layline which ran through the area.

One evening we were playing just up from the house, there was about 5 of us and our dog, and it was pitch black as it was the country.  All of a sudden the dog took off down to the house, we shouted and she kept going , she was a very good dog.  Turned round and two red eyes (?) glowing behind us. Much screamong and running down to the house, met with shouting (my parents at each other)  my dad comes charging out the house jumps in the car and screeches off.

My dad told us it was probably a deer, but we knew it wasn't, anyway deer would not have come right up to us like that.  Another time ther was a road past our house we called the 'scary road'  ::) there was a very old graveyard at the top of a little hill, walking past one day saw a little ball of misty cloud.  Dad said it was fog. hmm....  also we heard someone call my name when thee was noone there.

I don't supose you could explain the red eyes for me?

I work in a forensic mental hospital which was built on the grounds of an old asylum.
There are many tales from this place but all are regarding the same area of the building and alot of the tales are from some of the more sensible people in the place!!!

there is a back corridor leading on to one of the other wards, which links into the canteen as well, this is a place that really makes you feel uncomfortable on a night. A few people have felt something touch their shoulders and you always feel as though something is watching you when you go to the coke machine.

Even when its well lit ( believe me, i dont go down there unless its like blackpool illuminations)there is a strange atmosphere.

Turns out that part of the corridor is built on the actually part of the old mortuary!   :o

There is a very old ( by Australian standards that is ) cemetery a block or three from my place.

They are doing some roadworks there to build a new busway and have disturbed quite a few old unmarked graves on the edge of the cemetery,  unintentionally they say.

Walking past there is now impossible for me, and for several others that I have spoken to, as the screams and yells are just awful.  Not everyone hears them of course, but those of us who do are quite upset by it.  I don't think that they are impressed with being disturbed at all.  So sad.

Have seen things twice, and heard things once...

Most recently in 2004, staying in a 17th century house in Bermondsey, London for a few months while studying, I came in one night, opened the front door and out between me and the door dashed a very distinct, and distinctive, black cat with orange stripes!  It had very pricked up, pointy ears and its fur was all on end  :o  I quickly looked outside to see where it went but it was nowhere...needless to say the house didn't own any cats.

About 15 years ago, first trip to England for a working holiday, staying in 18th century terrace in Earl's Court (of course!), we would frequently wake in the night to the sound of quick footsteps on the landing outside the bedrooms doors.  My friend and I slept in the lounge room, and the steps always came up to the doorway of the lounge, but no-one ever came in, and no-one ever went back the other way.  There were 10 people in the flat all up, and they all heard the footsteps.

I've seen the figure of a man in the conservation lab at the National Archives here in Canberra, although what he was doing there I've no idea, as the building is only 30 years old.  We theorised that he was something to do with our first Parliament, because a large composite photograph of the members of that Parliament was in the lab at the time, being checked and treated.

Was there another building of any sort on the site where the National Archives are now?

I wasnt really a beleiver as such till i was on holiday in Ireland last year doing family research
My brother and I were in Glasnevin cemetery in Dublin and he showed me the grave of Michael Collins
(famous Irish patriot).
I took a quick photo but It wasnt till I got home to Glasgow and took my memory card to copy some of the photos, that I noticed a figure to the right of the grave it looks to me like a redheaded woman it spooked me when I saw it as Im 100%sure there was no one there when I took it plus the inscription on the grave is about 3ft high so i think I would have noticed a very small redheaded woman lol .
Anyway have a wee look and make your own mind up I promise I havent doctored the photo at all (im not clever enough lol)

I don't think I've ever seen a ghost.

My mother was a no-nonsense kind of person who believed in God but was not very religious or spiritual.

She told me about a few times in her life when someone she loved came to her room while she was sleeping and just sat near her bed.  It was always in the wee hours of the morning while she was asleep.  She said it was like a dream but different:  vivid, calm and loving.  Whenever it happened, she learned later the same day that the person had died.  It even happened when my father died and they had been divorced for many years.  It also happened once when my brother was in a diabetic coma but he survived; I guess it wasn't his time to go.

The day before my mother died, I was talking to the home care person about all of the people who would be visiting that day.  My mother, who was on serious pain medication, piped up, "_____ is coming".  She had said my father's name so I asked (very freaked out), who is _____?  And she replied with a little laugh, "My ex-husband".

Elaine:  Sorry to hear your Meniere's was acting up.  I get benign positional vertigo quite a bit and it is more than aggravating and disconcerting, sometimes it is downright dangerous and scary.  It's no fun!

Regards,
Josephine

Rosemary

This is a great story.
I'm not a non-believer.  However, I'm very cynical.  Don't you agree Rosemary that there has been some point that you've been discussing family with your maw and your dream reflected that.
It's also likely that your dream wasn't the previous night, getting the envelope from your maw possibly just resurrected an older dream.

I've enjoyed reading this thread - I love ghost stories.  Apart from seeing shadows in the dark, I can't say I've experienced anything really supernatural.  Whether that is lucky or not............

PS If you like a good scare - watch this....  Warning - Not for the faint hearted!

I'm not sure exactly what to believe, but I think there is so much evidence out there that ghosts must exist, whatever they are.

I can definitely sense things at times, have quite often seen things out of the corner of my eye, although it's hard to know if it was just a trick of the brain.  But feeling a chill in the room or sensing something that sends a chill down your spine - that's real...

I'm sure they are out there watching us...

I would agree with you Dave, but I know the dream was definitely the night before, and I described the card with the list to her before she gave me the envelope.  She's always cutting me things out of newspapers and magazines etc, so it could easily have been one of them.
The list was more or less as I had dreamt it, just notes jotted down.

It just seemed strange that all this happened on my grandfather's birthday, and that was what my mam was writing about.  We are close to a breakthrough, he has been a mystery, and it feels like this is a sign that I'm going to find something after 17 years of looking.

I think you had to be there really ;D

By the way Dave, my daughters have just watched the video clip behind my back, and said they had seen it four years ago, and they weren't impressed :)

But they're both teenagers, probably wasn't gory enough - sorry :)
