Would someone please be able to tell me how, if at all, I might find out my great grandfather's service record?
In 1861 he was at the Cavalry Barracks, Aston, Birmingham aged 18, a private. So would I be able to find out when he joined?
In 1871 he was at the Cavalry Barracks, Hulme, Manchester aged 28, married, a corporal.
By 1881 he was a police constable living in Sarratt, Hertfordshire with his wife and son. He died in Hoddesdon in 1887.
Any help greatly appreciated.

The records should be at the NA in Kew - you need to look for his discharge records, presumably between 1871 and 1881 (although you may be able to narrow this down if you have any family certificates from this period).

Hello Jorose
:)
Thank you for the link. I have contacted them to see if they do, in fact, hold records for his regiment and I should hear back from them within 10 to 20 working days. I know that he left Manchester in 1872 but am not sure if that was when he actually left the service.
Thank you again.
