Title: Oldest and Youngest Rootschatters
Post by: daval57 on Wednesday 09 January 08 02:30 GMT (UK)
This has probably been covered before but it just crossed my mind.
What is the age group on the site?
From the folk I've dealt with, I guess the average is about 55 (no offence to anyone older or younger - I'm talking average).

However, who is the youngest and oldest researcher on RC?

Mods, what is the average?

I got interested when I was in my early 20's but never did much serious research.  It wasn't until a few years ago, when I got my first PC, that I started recording it.

Hi Dave

Pam had a thread going for a good while with a poll. I think the peak number was in the 30/40 age group. it was on ToT board so it's probably gone now.

Maybe you could put a poll up on this thread with broad age groupings.

Yes, Gadget, and as you proved before, unlike some of us slightly younger Rootschatters you can actually do 'simple' mathematics!

Welcome Ayashi, at 19 you've got to be pretty close to being the youngest.  Glad you're keeping up the family tree.  I'm trying to get younger members of my family interested but to no avail yet.
They're interested, but not enough to assist or take up the research.
Well done.

I'm 21 and have been interested in family history for quite a few years.

An average age of 55 for this forum is very different from most forums I'm a member of, where I would say the average age is around 18-25.

I've had my bus pass for a couple(?!) of years plus senior rail card, great for travelling to record offices  ::)  ;)

My daughter started researching when she was 16, ten years later she's just as keen!

There's always something else to find out  :D

Putting flesh on the bones; going sideways (this led us to the truth in a family story, we thought it was one of our Grandfather's fairy tales!).

In the 80-85 age range we have six Rootschatters but I'm at a loss to understand this obsession with ages.  By the way, just in case anyone's interested, I was born at 10.15am on 12 June 1927  ;D
Can anyone remember how to work out which day of the week one was born ?
I'm desperate to know whose child I am   ;D ;D

Hi Isles.  I started the thread.  It came up in a conversation I was having with someone about when I started researching the family.  It just made me interested in what the average age of other researchers might be.

I started when I was 20 (so recently...!  ;)) when my Dad died and I suddenly realised I knew nothing about his family.

So maybe not so much about age, but simply as our older family diminshes? and therefore we tend to start at middle age?

I started my research when i was 20, for emigration reasons. I enjoyed it very much so i kept up with it. It cost me a fortune back then without a computer and the help of all my RC friends. I am now 58 and still done know everything about searching as i have only had a computer for a few years.

Hi Hume

Nah - you're elderly!  ;D

Ryan started on Rootschat when he was about 14 (18 now) I believe.

Another Rootschatter is only just 11, although she joined cos her grandma was a member (RIP Nessie  :'( )

some of the birthdays reflect much more senior members

I am also bonny and blithe etc

I started when it looked like I wouldn't be able to have any descendants of my own, so I thought I'd research my ancestors.

I was wrong about the "no descendants" - my son is 12 now!  :)

I was 28 when I started researching 14 years ago.

Hello,

I'm Tuesday's child. :D My mum and I used to use this account together but now I'm the only one that really utilises RootsChat. I turned 16 last year on Christmas Eve btw. Mum and Gramps managed to put the family history bug in me when I was eight (still haven't managed to wriggle it out ;)). I wrote a story in Yr 3 about my great-great grandparents, I don't know how historically accurate it was but it was something about a treasure map hehe.. Oh.. I'm not 180 years old, that age has some meaning to me though!
