This has probably been covered before but it just crossed my mind.
What is the age group on the site?
From the folk I've dealt with, I guess the average is about 55 (no offence to anyone older or younger - I'm talking average).
However, who is the youngest and oldest researcher on RC?
Mods, what is the average?
I got interested when I was in my early 20's but never did much serious research. It wasn't until a few years ago, when I got my first PC, that I started recording it.
-
As of 2 weeks ago I am 34 ;D
-
Hi Dave
Pam had a thread going for a good while with a poll. I think the peak number was in the 30/40 age group. it was on ToT board so it's probably gone now.
Maybe you could put a poll up on this thread with broad age groupings.
Gadget :)

I was 29 yesterday. Been doing family research for 18 months or so. Lynette
-
I admit to being 80 but a mere stripling compared to Gadget (See her profile). But then she has a gent called Methuselah in her family tree ;D ;D
-
and next month, I'll be even older ;D
-
Yes, Gadget, and as you proved before, unlike some of us slightly younger Rootschatters you can actually do 'simple' mathematics!
-
we only had bits of stick and little clay beads in those days ;D
-
And now she's the proud possessor of a slide rule - none of those modern calculators for our Gadget ;D ;D
-
28 :D
-
336
-
oops - meant 36 (honest)
-
You were nearly the undesputed eldest then, Sueky!
I'm 19 :)
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Welcome to Rootschat Ayashi
(i'll admit to occasionally looking 336 - after a few late nights!)
-
Welcome Ayashi, at 19 you've got to be pretty close to being the youngest. Glad you're keeping up the family tree. I'm trying to get younger members of my family interested but to no avail yet.
They're interested, but not enough to assist or take up the research.
Well done.
Dave

I'm 21 and have been interested in family history for quite a few years.
An average age of 55 for this forum is very different from most forums I'm a member of, where I would say the average age is around 18-25.
-
Welcome Ayashi ... hope you find RootsChat fun, informative and useful !
(You can see my age on my profile ... and if you believe that, you'd believe anything !)
-
I've had my bus pass for a couple(?!) of years plus senior rail card, great for travelling to record offices ::) ;)
My daughter started researching when she was 16, ten years later she's just as keen!

Is there anything else to find out ?

Is there anything else to find out ?
There's always something else to find out :D
Putting flesh on the bones; going sideways (this led us to the truth in a family story, we thought it was one of our Grandfather's fairy tales!).

I'm 19 :)
Welcome Ayashi
I'm not sure about that - click on my profile ;D ;D ;D

Don't you believe it, Atashi and Sueky !
It was less than a year ago she got her bus pass !
Now me, I don't have a bus pass !!
-
I got a Metro pass now ;D
-
We don't have a metro in wild and woolly Wales ...
-
2006 :o
I don't believe it for a second, Gadget
Surely those '00' are a typo? ;D
-
sueky - you sussed me ;D
I'm really 26 8)
Added:

Why do you think I left ;D ;D ;D

If you believe that ...

I think Kesannah beats you all hands down, she is a great great grandmother.... but won't reveal her true age.
She has sons older than you Gadget!
jc

-
I'm really 26 8)
And so knowledgeable for one so young

In the 80-85 age range we have six Rootschatters but I'm at a loss to understand this obsession with ages. By the way, just in case anyone's interested, I was born at 10.15am on 12 June 1927 ;D
Can anyone remember how to work out which day of the week one was born ?
I'm desperate to know whose child I am ;D ;D
-
June 12th,1927 was a Sunday, according to http://www.searchforancestors.com/utility/dayofweek.html

And the child that is born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.
(but I think gay had the old-fashioned meaning when that was written !)
-
What was mondays child? Thats what i am. Lynette
-
Mondays child is fair of face,
Tuesdays child is full of grace,
Wednesdays child is full of woe,
Thursdays child has far to go,
Fridays child is loving and giving,
Saturdays child works hard for his living,
And the child that is born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.
I'm a Friday ...
-
Thanks Lydart. Lynette : :)
-
Hi all! Now I know why I have several brick walls in my family tree! I'm a Wednesday's child and full of woe..... :'( Pat
-
Thanks for that Stephen. "Loving and giving" Lydart ? You're giving me a hard time but I suspect that you love me ;D
-
I'm 20 - 21 in July.
I was 18 when I started in family history.
-
but I'm at a loss to understand this obsession with ages.
Hi Isles. I started the thread. It came up in a conversation I was having with someone about when I started researching the family. It just made me interested in what the average age of other researchers might be.
Dave
-
Isles ... you say the nicest things !
:-*
-
I'm a Sunday's child. Bonny, blithe, good and gay. Take that as you will. ;D

Hi Dave. Please forgive me. I was only being ironic. I'm really obsessed by age each time I look in the mirror ;D
And Lydart, I suspect you're being ironic. If so, you certainly know how to make a happy man old !
-
I'm only 17. I feel so young. :P

Nothing to forgive. ;D Just thought I'd clarify why I started the thread.
Hume24 - Well done. By the time your my age you should have sorted out the entire UK. ::)
-
I started when I was 20 (so recently...! ;)) when my Dad died and I suddenly realised I knew nothing about his family.
So maybe not so much about age, but simply as our older family diminshes? and therefore we tend to start at middle age?

and :P to you too Hume! More respect to us oldies! ;)

I started my research when i was 20, for emigration reasons. I enjoyed it very much so i kept up with it. It cost me a fortune back then without a computer and the help of all my RC friends. I am now 58 and still done know everything about searching as i have only had a computer for a few years.

I was born at 3:25pm on Tuesday 26th July 1988 ;D
P.S and definitely not 'full of grace'... I reckon I was born a day early, lol
-
I was born on a Wednesday (at 3.00pm, February 12th, 1986) but I'm not full of woe. ;D

We ladies aim to please !

I reckon I qualify for both titles....oldest and youngest!
Today I feel about 90 (I'm not!).
The rest of the household (ladies) say I've the mentality of a five year old.
So There!

Hi Hume
Nah - you're elderly! ;D
Ryan started on Rootschat when he was about 14 (18 now) I believe.
Another Rootschatter is only just 11, although she joined cos her grandma was a member (RIP Nessie :'( )
some of the birthdays reflect much more senior members
I am also bonny and blithe etc
:D :D
-
I did start doing FH when I was 8 but Rootschat wasn't around then ::)
I am a Friday's Child and a Pisces 8) 8) 8)
Gadget
-
I started when it looked like I wouldn't be able to have any descendants of my own, so I thought I'd research my ancestors.
I was wrong about the "no descendants" - my son is 12 now! :)
I was 28 when I started researching 14 years ago.
-
Gadget,
When are you going to vote?
Lots of comments but no vote in the 90+ bracket yet!
;D
Fight fight fight

I'm just a babe in the woods :) :).............young ;D

Hello,
I'm Tuesday's child. :D My mum and I used to use this account together but now I'm the only one that really utilises RootsChat. I turned 16 last year on Christmas Eve btw. Mum and Gramps managed to put the family history bug in me when I was eight (still haven't managed to wriggle it out ;)). I wrote a story in Yr 3 about my great-great grandparents, I don't know how historically accurate it was but it was something about a treasure map hehe.. Oh.. I'm not 180 years old, that age has some meaning to me though!
