After hours surfing the net I'm asking for some help looking for a reported obituary in The Oban Times Jan or Fen 1920 for my GGrandmothers Uncle Hugh Cowan, family also known as MacCowan, can anyone point me in the right direction, cheers Merideth

Hi Merideth
The Oban Times according to this website has a searchable archive. http://www.obantimes.co.uk/
Also you may want to try the library there who will most likely have the old papers on fiche

Hi Ann, I had no luck with the Oban Times website but I have had a message from someone who has a copy of the content of his obituary and hopefully a copy of his will, thank you for the hint anyway, cheers Merideth

[Hi I know nothing about him my only interest is the picture of his daughter and there is a plaque to him as Lord Provost in Oban Council offices. Our interest is in the artist but we like to know about his subjects as back ground to the paintings I have attached a copy of the painting. We are told it was painted for her 21st birthday, commissioned by her father Hugh MacCowan thanks for getting back to me rgds Sue

Do you have any other info on Hugh Cowan (or McCowan) of Kimberley House, Oban? Is the Hugh MacCowan trophy for Gaelic in his memory (or perhaps financed by him)? I remember receiving a photograph of his gravestone years ago.

Hi Merideth,
Since you have extensive Cowan research maybe you can help me.
My grandfather Alexander (Alistar) Cowan was born in Oban abt 1886. His mother was Kate McDonald and his father was Alexander Cowan who died about 1891. There was also a brother who died as a baby. I haven't been able to find any more information. Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I just found this thread. My sister-in-law sent me a picture of Hugh McCowan, Provost of Oban and we are trying to determine his relationship to J. Alexander McCowan who married Florence McCorquodale in Argyllshire in 1771. Their son Hugh and daughter Ann migrated to Ontario, Canada in the 1820s and 30s. If any of this shows up in your trees, I would appreciate any information you have.
Thank you,
Larry
