Hi Gillian

Was looking at the Egremont Cemetery Records & came across the names you were looking for some months ago.
Not sure if these will fit but here they are.

John Ellwood buried 3/3/1931 Age 67 years & Sarah Jane 14/12/1940 Age 75 years. The address given was 6 Tower View. Castle Croft. Egremont.

Best Wishes.
Sandra

Hi Gillian.

John & Sarah are buried together in Section L Consecrated  Grave 71.

Bearing in mind the address was Castle Croft - does this one belong to you as well, it was also Castle Croft.

Reginald Ellwood - Age 25 - Bachelor - buried 5/11/1928 Section L Con  Grave 42

Willing to look at any others for you.

Best Wishes.
Sandra

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for that. I didn't have Reginald the youngest son. I hadn't got round to checking them out in 1911!! It all certanily fits as my John & Sarah Jane Ellwood family.

John the father was definately a teacher.

Regards,

Gillian

Hi Gillian.

So pleased things might me dropping into place for you.  The description given for John says retired school master.

On the 1901 census which shows John & Sarah - one of the children is John Ellwood age 11 years.
The Egremont Cemetery records show a John Ellwood buried 31/8/1941 who died at Carlisle Infirmary, age 49 years & who lived at 7 Fearon Street in a grave purchased by a Dorothy Darby of that household.   John was listed as a widower at that time.

Referring back to the death of Reginald Ellwood, the grave was purchased by a William Hodgson of 12 Penzance Street. Moor Row. (Collier)

The 1901 census for John & Sarah Ellwood shows a Mary Ann Ellwood born at Little Clifton in 1891. In June 1915 a Mary Ellwood married a William Hodgson at Whitehaven (10b 1456)

Interestingly, another burial which sticks out is for a George Hodgson 17/4/1920 of 12 Penzance Street. Moor Row. In a grave purchased by William Hodgson. The reference for this is:- Section L  Con  Grave 42.
This address would appear to be compatible with the burials 24/4/1907 of Wilfred Ellwood & 7/8/1907 of Jane Ellwood. Must be the same family.

Best Wishes.
Sandra

Sandra

Does your record include deaths from 1850 or does it only have a certain time frame?

Kind Regards,

Tammy

Hello Tammy,

I have no definite answer to that question but presume they used the burial grounds around the Churches at that time.  I have never heard of any other burial ground in the Egremont area.  Apart from Church grounds, the next largest Cemetery would have been in Whitehavem.   Sorry could'nt be more helpful.

Are you looking for someone in particular that we could help with. ?

Regards
Sandra  ;)

I'm looking for William Charles Warwick and his Wife Sarah Elizabeth Harding. I have William born in Egremont in 1784 and Sarah born in Carlisle in 1790 and a Marriage between the two of them in Egremont in 1810. I have both of their deaths happening in 1850. I have no idea where they died because I don't have a place of birth.

I am very unsure of how accurate this is as I got the information of someone else and it has William and Sarah's Son John born 1802 in Staffordshire and their Daughter Sarah Jane born in Egremont in 1813. It all seems pretty mixed up to me. I'm basically trying to find proof that the two were in fact married and had a son named John who was sent to Australia as a Convict. I'm also trying to find proof that William was born in Egremont.

I don't live in England so I have no idea how far Egremont is from Staffordshire. It also makes it harder knowing where or how to find information.

Kind Regards,

Tammy

Hello Tammy,

I see your problem - many anc.try trees with no sources and bare information. You are talking of a distance of 275 kilometres or 171 miles.

The nearest records office where Parish records for Egremont would be kept is the Whitehaven Records Office

E-Mail -  whitehaven.records.office@cumbriacc.gov.uk

Hi Gillian, was looking for the ancient Reginald and came across this -- where does this family fit it?

Hi Steve,

I have two Ellwood branches in my family:

1) The Dufton Ellwoods - our common ancestors

2) Ellwoods originating from Caldbeck Cumberlend.

I have found no link between these two families. The Reginald in this thread is from the Caldbeck Ellwoods.

Regards,

Gillian
