Can anyone decipher what the highlighted line says? Fish XXXX Assistant
Many thanks in advance
-
hmmmm - well, not sure - but you can ignore 'FISH' - thats been added during the analysis of the returns.
Note that Father John Barrow (above) is a Poulterer, also strangely lumped in the FISH category ---- could the word in question be an even more scrawled version of Poulterer ? Would make sense to be Dad's assistant ?

Hi wine scribbler
Welcome to Rootschat.
His father appears to be a Poulterer with Fish being added later. Could it be Poulterer's Assistant again with Fish being added later.

That does seem to be it - Poulterers assistant does make sense.
I didn't know about the analysis additions so that was very useful too.
Many thanks.

Hi wine scribbler,
The Theobald name in the census extract caught my eye. I'm sure William Theobald is not an ancestor but I would like to know name of the place where the census was taken and the year please. If there are any children with that family I wouldn't mind their details.
Thanks & regards.

it is from the 1891 census for west bergholt, essex. llisted are the head and wife as you can see plus three children - 2 daughters and a son (william 4). let us know if there is a connection.

I can't say for sure whether there is a connection or not, I haven't been able to spend too much time with the siblings of ancestors. I live in Australia and when I am able to get to the ERO in Chelmsford I usually have a list as long as your arm of possible ancestors or possible leads, so it doesn't leave much time for their siblings, other than finding their baptisms. The name William has been used in all generations of my line except the last two but then of course it's a pretty common name, so not too much emphasis can be placed on it.
After many years of fruitless search for my ancestor William Tibbel (Theobald) I finally found him in Chelmsford plus the marriage of his parents John Tibbles and Elizabeth French in 1774 at Chelmsford. As an aid to finding a John Tibbles/Theobald circa 1749 I'm noting any Theobald families in the hope that the children's names might suggest a link to my line and then hopefully give a lead to John. The info I have on some Theobald ancestor's siblings suggests that they were prone to ranging far and wide in Essex, so I'm keeping my options well open on the birthplace of John.
If you have the names etc of the two daughter and handy I would be grateful for them.
Thanks and regards.

I would agree that it is clearly Poulter, and thereby assistant to father.
-
one daughter is Edith M but the other I cant really read it might be Maryette or something.
-
Thanks for the names, when next I'm in the UK I'll have a look at Maryette? and see if I can decipher it. I'll also check the family out in the 1901 Census.
