Title: WILLIAM WOOD
Post by: Hindhaugh on Wednesday 02 January 08 16:36 GMT (UK)
My Great Grandfather William Wood was born in Sunderland, England in 1826.  He married Harriet Wearmouth in 1849. They had six children. His wife died in 1864.  According to family tales William left England after she died and emigrated to Canada or America possibly with two of his sons.  One of the sons may have been George Beldon Wood born 1855 at Aycliff, Co Durham, England.  I would be grateful if anyone can help.

Their children were:
Dororthy Jane born 1851 at Woodham, Co Durham she married Richard Latham
William  born 1853 at Kirknell, Co Durham married Isabella Lunam
George Beldon born 1855 at Kirknell - I can't find anything on him
James Wearmouth born 1859 at Seamer, Yorkshire
Harriet born 1862 at Sunderland
John born 1864 at Sunderland.

I have found William and John on the 1881 British census but I can't find anything on either George Beldon or James Wearmouth so I am assuming that they emigrated with their father.

Did you ever locate them on the 1861 Census? (I can't seem to find them)   :P

I found what might be your Dorothy.

http://www.familysearch.org/

Go to: International Genealogical Index
Batch #(type in) I029563
(you can see the entire family if you don't put any names in)

There is no mention of any of the other children of William & Harriet. This posting does not mention Dorothy's mother.

A Dorothy Jane Wood married Richard Phipson Latham in Bishopwearmouth, Durham, England

I can't see them on the 1881 Canadian Census, or the 1880 U.S.

Many thanks for taking the trouble to look for me.  I have Dorothy's marriage and a list of her children.

I have the Wood family on the 1861 census living at 20 Dock Street, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland.  They took some finding as William Wood (father) is only listed as Wood
and other names are missing.

They are listed as follows

Wood Age 34 Farmer
H (wife) age 32 ( this is Harriet)
D.J Daughter age 9 ( this is Dorothy Jane)
William Wood Son Age 8
B Son age 6
J son age 4
James son age 1

Harriet my Grandmother was not born until 1862

What happened to William might always remain a mystery but I would love to find out what happened to him.  If only the dead could talk.

My thanks once again

Regards

Judith

William's Parents were Ralph Wood and Dorothy Beldon.  Ralph was born around 1791 at Heddon on the Wall, Northumberland and Dorothy was born at  Lee Saint John Northumberland. They married in 1822 at Gateshead.

On the 1871 census some of William and Harriets children were living with them i.e Dorothy Jane, George Beldon, James W  (so they did not got with their  father but I can't find them on the 1881 census) and William.  They are all listed as Grandchildren.

Is this you?  :o

I found it by searching the names of Williams's parents.

If it is, you should add the link to your profile.

If not, this could be very promising...

Your family can be found in Mississippi & Oklahoma. There are photos and BMD's as well as census details. Very informative. You can also contact the person who started the site.

You might want to check out this marriage....as it might have been a mistranscription of his name...

Interesting! Here is a wrench in the works... :D
The IGI has an extracted file for christening... a James Wearmouth Wood
November 13th, 1859   Seamer By Stokesley, Yorks
Father Mark and mother Ann???
Hmmmm...Coincidence... or an adoption by a brother, perhaps...or a mistake in the register file, as wearmouth is the mother's name, isn't it ?   J.J.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is also a birth  freeBMD  June Q. 1889  for a
George Beldon Wood   Sunderland  v.10a  p.614
with a death for same the following year...
Might be a brother's or his own...
Hello
I am not sure how to reply to individuals so I will reply to all.
To Janice M - Thank you for the passenger list sites.  I will have a look at them.
I have already been in touch with George Graham the owner of the web site you mentioned.  It is a very good site which I have contributed to it with my family etc.  His connection is with my missing William Wood's brother.
The George Beldon Wood who's birth and death listed on BMD is the son of William Wood (son of William and Harriet)
The birth for James Wearmouth Wood is on the IGI - parents William Wood and Harriet.  The other birth with parents Mark and Ann may have a connection but I have not come across anything so far.
I have an old photograph of a smartly dressed male - no one knows who it is but on the back of the photograph is the name and address of the photographer which is Sheppard & Daguere - 117 King Street East, Toronto.
I would like to think that he is or connected to William Wood - but who knows?
Hi Hindhaugh. Can't help with your enquiry directly but I too have a William Wood in Canada (unfortunately not yours). Mine was in Nova Scotia but I noticed lots of Wood families in that area. You may find some trace of him by searching the Canadian census. Mine were in River Herbert, Cumberland, NS. Good luck!
