Post by: Penninah on Monday 03 January 05 17:18 GMT (UK)
Hi all,

Could someone please help me with a 51 census lookup pleeeeease??
Im looking for 'Henry James Bartlett' born March qtr 1851 (i am aware that he may just have missed the census but just incase he didn't)

His place of birth on the 81 census is down at Kingston, Berks (i also have Witney written down, perhaps this is the district?)

Thanks 4 reading!  ;)

Why not try the parish church register and see, if he was baptized, whether the father's name is recorded there?  I don't know whether parishes were still potentially responsible for financing illegitimate children (they certainly were in the late 18th century); if so, parish officers would have had an interest in finding out whether fathers were prepared to contribute or not, in administering disciplinary measures, etc (any penances in the parish register?).
