Hi,
I would like to find some census details of Daniel Sexton. He was born in Cork about 1860-1870. His wife was Hannah Daly.
I have an Ellis Island record which gives
Hannah Sexton aged 31
Julia Sexton aged 5
Timothy Sexton aged 10m
Arrived in New York Oct 2 1912
It notes her husband to be Daniel Sexton 218 Monroe St NYC and Us citizenship Superior Court NY Oct 24 1894
I am sure that this passenger record is correct as the sister of Hannah was named Julia (my grandmother) and her father was named Timothy. Presumably Hannah went home for the birth of Timothy.
I would like to know when Daniel emigrated from Timoleague Cork and to find out any family details from the census records.
I have a ref in an old letter that Daniel died in about 1918.
Any help would be much appreciated.
A very happy new year to all
Regards
Geoff :) :) :)

Hi Tazzie,
That is really very helpful. I did not know that there were 6 children. Widow at
39 years, life was really tough. Sorry to ask for more but can you see Hannah on 1930 Census. In the letter I referred to she was living at Woodhaven NY in 1931.
Later I will try searching for the children. Maybe I have new cousins!!
Have a great evening. Best wishes

Just had another look and they are not popping out at me.
Will play with the names.

If you check the death index at italiangen.org, there are two Daniel Sextons who died in Manhattan between 1910 & 1920. One died 16 Jan 1912 at age 49, and the other died 17 Oct 1918 at age 47. Perhaps one is yours.
-
Hi Shelley.....
Cannot tie them down in 1930 though.
Interesting.... Julia Daly arrived 13 Oct 1920
age 35 b @ 1885
port of departure Queenstown
port of arrival Philidelphia Penn
last residence Ireland
born Ballinascarthy Co Cork
mother Mrs Mary Daly Carrig Ballinascarthy
name of friend MRS HANNAH SEXTON.

Thanks Tazzie and Shelley,
I think that the Daniel Sexton who died aged 47 is mine.
Tazzie the maiden name of Hannah was Daly, so there is obviously a connection with the Julia Daly who arrived on 13 Oct 1920.
Strange that thet have disappeared in 1930 as in 1931 Hannah Sexton was definitely living at 133-31 83rd Street Wodhaven NY
I have been led to believe that Hannah had 5 children, so I wonder if one died at a young age.
Hope that you both had a good New Year's Eve and a very happy New Year.

I have just discovered a marriage
DANIEL SEXTON with HANNAH DALY 18 Feb 1906 Manhattan
I suppose that this means that Nellie and Margaret as found by Tazzie on the 1920 Census were either born out of wedlock or from a previous marriage.

I am still finding bits but would love to have info on Daniel Sexton and Hannah Daly( Sexton) on the 1900 and 1930 Census. Probably a tough request as so far Tazzie could not find in 1930.
There is an immigration record of Julia Daly May 15 1902 on Ellis Island, sister of Hannah Daly. Place of birth Clonakilty which is where my Sexton lot came from (Clonakilty or Timoleague). Help.

If you sign up at http://labs.familysearch.org/, you can search most of the 1900 Census, including New York.

Thanks Shelley, I did not know that site. Searching US records is quite new for me.

A big thanks Shelley, I found Daniel Sexton on the 1900 Census living with wife Nora and children Margaret and Nellie. As I suspected he must have remarried.
They were living at Madison St the same as the 1910 Census result posted by Tazzie.

Hi Geoff
I have found your Hannah in 1930. You said that she lived in Woodhaven in 1931, so I searched for Hannah living in Queens and found her mistranscribed as "Serton". She and her family are living at 133-31 83rd Street.
Head, Hannah Sexton, age 47, owns home value 5,300, has a radio, first married at age 24, born Southern Ireland, parents born Southern Ireland, immigration year 1899, occupation none
Also in the household is, Nellie age 31, Timothy age 19, Daniel age 16, John age 13 plus
Richard Glennon age 27 and Jewly Glennon (Julia?) age 23. Julia is shown as being first married at age 19
IGI has a marriage..
Sexton, Julia December 28 1926, certificate number 1426, Manhattan
Glennon, Richard E "Dec 28'26 1927" 1426, Manhattan (which shows that the marriage was registered in 1927)
Best wishes

Hi Agnes,
Thank you so much. I now have all the family details. Thank you also for the marriage record. My next job will be to try and trace what happened to all the children.
Best regards

Well done guys....
I think I started looking too hard. As I do not know the places it was hard to pin them down ...should have worked out the addresses :)
Have fun Geoff
Tazzie

Thanks Tazzie
Agnes could you tell me where you found the marriage of Julia Sexton and Richard Glennon. I can't find it but probably not looking in the right place. Thanks
regards
Geoff
Please ignore that last question. I have just found it.

Tazzie, Margaret Sexton b June 1898 was on 1900 Census and again on 1920 Census. She was not on the 1910 Census which you kindly gave me.
Any chance of finding her in 1910. Many thanks

Think I may have a Stray Margaret here but it raises a question....
Sexton Margaret pupil f w 9 s mother b New York
father b New York
not able to read or write
has attended school in last year.
At an institute for the improved instruction of deaf mutes
Brooklyn ward 24 Kings New York
Roll T 624_975 page 1B dist 652 image 569.
However cannot see a disabliity on other sheets.
On of few Sexton's not with parents.

Thanks for looking, but parents were born in Ireland. She should be about 12 if other census results correct and as you said there is no disability marked on other census results. I was hoping that she might be with other Sexton family as Daniel had 2 brothers Pat and Con. both in New York around this period. So far I have have not tracked them down.

Hi Geoff,
What years are Patrick & Conner born and I'll have a look ......also if married wifes names please.
Tazzie
-
Hi Tazzie,
That is very kind . Daniel Sexton had 2 brothers Pat and Con and a sister Katherine. Katherine married and her married name was Callahan. She was living at 245 Clinton St NYC in 1931. I do not know any of the dates of birth but as Daniel was born in 1872 and my grandmother Julia who stayed in Ireland in 1865, it must have been around that period. I have been trying to locate with the help I received but have to admit that I have difficulty finding my way around US records. I think that the 3 mentioned above stayed in the New York area but not sure.
Regards
Geoff
-
Sorry, I think that Katherine referred to as Aunt Kate in a letter had 2 children but I do not know the names.

Just another bit of info. I found on FindmyPast an immigration record for
30 Sept 1904 Queenstown to Boston The Cymric
Con Sexton to New York Adult
Danl Sexton Aged 21
Margaret Sexton Adult
Patrick Sexton Adult.
I am not sure if this is my familty as there is not much detail.
I also know that Con and Patrick were dead in 1931.

Geoff

Well the ones above were off to Cambridge Mass.
Darl Patrick & Con state to Brother John at 2 different addresses in East Cambridge. Margeret is returning to her home in Cambridge another address and states wife.
So maybe co-incidence.
Not having much luck for 1910 though!
Tazzie
-
Certainly looks like a coincidence as there was no brother John.
I have just ordered my first certificate from New York which is a new experience.

Daniel Sexton was my grandfather. My father was John Patrick Sexton, son of Hannah Daly Sexton, who was born February 9, 1917 and died September 25, 1994.

Hi Hannah S. I never received notification of your posting and have just seen it today. I would be very interested to have contact so hope that you will reply. You need to make 3 postings before we can exchange PM's. Very interested to have any info on your family. Regards
