Title: Manchester Burials online
Post by: kooky on Monday 31 December 07 13:11 GMT (UK)
Does any one know when the entries for Manchester General and Blackley will be available on this site?
The message says that they will be available to search soon.
When is soon? :-\
This message has been there for 18 months at least!!!!

Kooky,

Congratulations!

You seem to have found the one subject that rootschatters can't answer!

Which site is "this site" by the way?
Title: Re: Manchester Burials online
Post by: kooky on Monday 21 January 08 13:40 GMT (UK)
site is           www.burialrecords.manchester.gov.uk
It is part of Manchester City Council's website.
If you know dates of death it is very good.
It can be pricey if you are not careful.
There is another thread about this, but I cant do that clever link thing :-[

I also cant seem to make the www bits turn blue!

I e-mailed AGAIN [!] and had a reply stating that Blackley and Manchester General would be added after Easter.
The site is now down for additions :)

Hopefully I will soon be able to clear up some missing deaths and burials!

This work was down to be at the end of Feb08.

I have a contact who has kicked up holy stink at the contents of the website and by the sound of it a real thorn in the necks of the burial service  ;D , this is what he told me

Hi Just to advice.
M/C Council IT, are now doing a new design layout for grave records, expected date 27 / 2 / 08
Then IT gives it to Blackley
The records are going off line for a few days,  whilst Blackley, employ a programmer to put on the records for Blackley & M/C General
Switched on again, now with Blackley & M/C General,  told  "hopefully in next 2 / 3 weeks".

Bad news, told not to expect too much for M/C General, as many files missing, poor record keeping, etc, & where in doubt, records missed.
However, the best we are going to get.

Regards
Ken

That will be the end of April then? Something to look forward to.. Shame about Manchester General records though, I had hopes of finding early family there.

Sorry to see you are in a bad mood Ken, hope to see your Victor Meldrew avatar out and about again soon  :D

Hi Barbara

Thats not Victor Meldrew it's my good friend Migky  ;D ;D  ;D ;D ;D

From what I understand from my contact the manchester burial website was in such a mess they had no choice but to upgrade the whole system. Many thousands of records were missing.

All I ask is a bit of honesty and they tell us what is missing, also a little bit more detail would also help before parting with my cash.

I knew it was one of you guys!  :D :D

Manchester service is expensive isn't it.  I got details by email of a burial in Allerdale (near Carlisle) and it was free as long as you had enough info for them to do a quick search - and you got to contact a real person.   If they can't find your relly quickly they tell you it will be £10 for time spent, but at least you are warned before you part with your cash.

Fortunately, I have the details (and photograph) of my maternal grandparents grave in Blackley, so don't have to pay the extortionate fee.

However, to find my paternal grandfather I had to contact Aberdeen.  I only knew his date of death and possible graveyard.  They replied within a couple of days, giving me the details and then sent, by post, maps of the graveyard (it is so large) to show me exactly how to find the grave.  Cost - NIL.

I was in the Manchester Record Office a few days ago, looking up deaths in Blackley and Harpurhey !!

I found the ones I wanted on the reel reader (name of the machine escapes me ... senior moment) ... and I could have searched for more if only I'd known.

Maybe we ought to have a page on RootsChat for requests for people going to various record offices who can do look ups on site ?

Sadly, I won't be in Manchester again for many months ...  :(

The Manchester Burials online page has changed.

It is now headed BACAS NG Genealogical Search.

There is no result when something is entered!

Anyone know what is happening? ::)

At a rough guess ... in the last 2-3 weeks of being offline, a new search page had been designed.

Now all they have to do is make it work!  ;D

Wonder how long that will take?

I went on the new site the day they relaunched it. I think they made a big boo-boo with the records. Not that they were wrong but that on there free search you could get all this info for free. The name of the person.
The exact date they were buried.
There age at death.
What cemetery they were in.
If new grave / reopened/ public
what section they were buried in. ie RC/C-of-E/ Conformist/none conformist/consecrated or none consecrated ground.
And this which i could not believe they gave for free  EVEN THE PLOT NUMBER

The only thing i could see you paying money for after that would be to find there last address and maybe who paid for the burial?
So this is why i think they reshut the site back down as they realized that they had given out to much info on the free search and would not get many people paying for what little info there was left to sell? That will be some wiz kid on a PC there . And you know councils like to waste as much of our hard earned money as possible ;D Remember this on Thursday when you vote  ::)
Life is like a box of chocolates, you don't know what ya going to get with Manchester's council.

Yahoo

I now have a list of all my Carey family and all other Carey's buried in Philips Park.

Cut and paste from website into an excel database and filter on grave numbers - did'nt cost a penny.

Keep up the good work Manchester Council - but the question is how long will it last  :(

Must get the rest of the families just in case

When I went on the site, all the ages showed up as 0.  Also, even though I know where my gran is buried her name doesn't show up on the site, not even if I just put in her surname.  Maybe her grave is not in a Manchester Council site.

I did find a few of her relatives, including a couple of her children who died as babies, but not the one who died aged 26.  When I clicked on "Link" by the side of one of the names I was asked to log in.  I tried and was told I wasn't registered.  So I decided to register using my email address as user name, only to be told that the user name was already in use!  So I put in my email address and clicked for reminder of password, and got a message stating that my email address could not be found.  What is going on?  I've sent an e-mail to Manchester Council asking for an explanation - will I ever get a reply.  I am registered on the Manchester Library site, but I can't believe I have to quote the password etc which I used to access that site.

Interestingly when I clicked on the name of a couple of the ancestors, the grave listed up to 10 people all with different names none of whom I've  ever heard of.

I'm just about to try again - the council have given me a pop up window to do a survey on what I think of their services!  :D :D :D :D :D :D

Aha! got there!  but only by typing surname only - it didn't work on first name and surname. and like Lizzie found, everyone is age 0  ::)

But - no charge - so that's an improvement!  :D
Do you think it will stay free once the local elections have finished?  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Barbara - It did work for me if I put in Christian names as well as surnames.  However, I have had a reply to my e-mail regarding log on difficulties from the Customer Services Manager, Bereavement Services, Blackley Cemetery and Crematorium (my e-mail went to a general office at Manchester Council) saying:

I do apologise for the problems you have encountered whilst trying to access our on-line burial records. We have recently updated the database and are experiencing some technical difficulties.

We are presently working on these issues and hope to have them resolved shortly.

Once again I do apologise for the frustration caused - it really is not my intention.

Thank you for your patience.

I'm not too sure what extra information we would receive if we bought credits - address of deceased perhaps or next of kin?  It would help where I have a few ancestors with the same name and am not sure when they died.  The ones I found yesterday, I generally knew the year of death if not the actual date.

Title: Re: Manchester Burials online
Post by: Barbara.H on Thursday 01 May 08 12:53 BST (UK)
I've tried it again and it worked this time  :D
I presume that if you bought the credits you would get an online image of the burial register, that's what you used to get for your £3. So then you got age and address, once  I got a vicar's name also. And you also got everyone else's details that were on the same page, so can do swops on rootschat later  ;D ;D

Oh dear, can't you hear the weariness in that poor Blackley person's email - bet they were glad to get home last night!

Barbara - He sent the email this morning!  He must have had dozens of complaints when he arrived at work - not a good start to a Friday. ::)

Thanks for the info re the credits.  It might be worth spending a few pounds to check up on some I'm not sure about.

Title: Re: Manchester Burials online

The site is working fine type in a surname and a list comes up withe names and date of burial.

Click on grave number and all names in the grave come up.

If there are lots of different names it is a public grave and not a family grave.

With this information you can go to Manchester Central Library and find full records on micro film.

The  thing that is missing on the grave number is the letter before the grave number and wether it is noncomformist, C of E, RC or Jewish making it difficult to find the actual grave.

I went along to southern cemy with just a grave no. to go on.  Planned to spend a couple of hours checking each plot until I found what I was I looking for. Found the grave in the second plot I looked in within 15 minutes !  Well chuffed.  First time I have done it.  Just lucky I suppose.

There seemed to be a few more folk doing the same thing.

Hi gledhill

It is murder trying to locate graves in PP.

Lots of headstones have been removed over the years, some were even removed after the great flood.

If you are looking in the CofE paupers section (parts of) D,K,L,M. Lots of headstones are buried upto 6" below the grass, just take a spade and uncover it.

The main problem with them sections is the plot number sequence is out in a few places.

But hey-ho it's fun hunting

Ken
