Hi Sylvia

If you search for his name here - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp?j=1 - putting "WO97" in the series box, you will discover if his records are on microfilm at Kew. If so you can order copies from them.

If he does not appear the only remaining records are the Muster and Pay Books (in WO12), but I am unsure if they go back that far. See also - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/step4.htm

If his regiment was in the Napoleonic War, or at Waterloo, you could post his name requesting a lookup in the medal rolls. But to get a medal for the Napoleonic Wars - which included Canada and the Caribbean as well as the Peninsular - he would have had to be alive in the late 1840s and submit a claim.
