Title: Public (rail) footbridge - Holderness Road, Hull
Post by: normandiebelle on Monday 24 December 07 20:26 GMT (UK)
Hello,
Does anyone know if there was a public overhead (rail) footbridge on Holderness Road, Hull in the 1960's?. If there was would anyone have any idea where I could find a photograph?
Many thanks in advance.

:D Many thanks for the response. More pictures that I can shake a stick at  :) I have found a photo there of a church, St Marys in Hull which is now demolished. One of my ancestors was married there and I only ever had a church name - now have a photo to go with it. Again, thanks for your time.
Regards.

Hi,
I used to cycle from west Hull to Thomas Street and also East Park on Holderness Road in the 1950's but I don't recall a footbridge.

Maybe the people who run this website could help?

Good luck,

:)Another big thank you for the website and I found something there which indicates that I am on the right track...just perhaps I had not explained  it correctly, for example and I quote...
The site of Southcoates station looking north in October 2005. In the shot looking north, the railway trackbed ran approximately through the traffic lights (the site of the level crossing on Holderness Road)
Its the 'site of the level crossing on Holderness Road' that I am looking for a photo of.
Again, many thanks for all your time  :)

I surfed for your railway footpath and didn't find a photo.  But the map on the link that I gave shows there were 2 places where railway lines crossed over Holderness Road.  One was a level crossing and the other was a rail bridge over the road. It's a pity the map didn't name any minor roads which could have been an added aid when googling.

Anyway, thanks for the question which led me to the sub station site because I found a photo of Botanic Station on Spring Bank in west Hull.   I have many happy childhood memories of being part of the throng taking a day trip to either Withernsea or Hornsea.

Good luck,
Rena

Hi,
As far as I can remember (but I'll check with the oracle when he wakes up) the rail bridge that crossed Holderness Road is near to Craven Street and carries the line to the docks, the level crossing is a short distance west and crossed Holderness Road close to where Mount Pleasant is nowadays.

Thanks firstly to Rena, hepburn and Bee,

From the websites sent I have located  a clear map of the area on Holderness Road where the crossing was (ish) Courtney Street / Waller Street area. I had a further browse to see if there was a photo of any description but nothing so far. But I am hopeful - again thanks for your input it is appreciated.  :)
Regards.

Hi!
l live near Holderness Road, the only over road rail track l know of ever being there is near cleveland street, the line is only used to transport coal from the docks now. lf you know of the exact location of any other tracks that may have been there l can take a look and see what info l can get.

There was a rail track many years back running through Marfleet avenue/lane side of hull. The walkway is still there where the track used to be and there is a bridge which goes over the old track.  This track would have at some point crossed holderness road but l have never taken the time to follow it and see exactly where it leads.

l know it went as far as withernsea in the other direction.

Dont know if this helps.

Lace.

Hi

I used to live in Hull and was only discussing the crossing with my mum and dad before Christmas. From what we remember the track crossed Holderness Road near East Hull Baths. It was towards the Craven Street side and was where there is a hotel now. The track bed was where the new road from Hedon Road to Chamberlain Road? was put in. That would put it next to Brazil Street I think, also "Vine Street" crossing rings a bell with me.

I do remember my sister buying a car from a 2nd hand car lot that was next to the crossing gates , circa 1979. It was on the left as you went into town.

Hope that helps,

Ian

Hi,

The footbridge in question was next to what is now the vacant cornmill hotel which is next to where the church where one of your relations was married was on Brazil st which was demolished at a guess some 20 years ago.

The footbridge was the Hull to Witherensea line [not 100% sure] i believe and must have been taken down some 35 years ago it is now a road called Mount Pleasant which links Hedon road to Stoneferry and runs the original rout of the railway line.

The site where Waller st was is now one of these modern shopping fandangoe's with a asda jjb sport matalan etc.
Courtney st is across Holderness rd from the shopping centre.

Further along the line and running parallel there was once a stadium before and up to 1922 where Hull Kingston Rovers Rugby club played was later to be-com the Hollis bros timber co when the rugby club from it's Craven st ground to one further down Holderness rd.

i can remember this bridge well, as a child i would run up the stairs if a train was coming and wait as it passed underneath for the steam  i thought it was like being up in the clouds . We would catch the train to Withernsea  at the station. The man who operated the switches only had one arm ,he was the g/dad of one of my schoolfriends .The yard on the same side of the road was a feed and hay suppliers. this was opposite the bridge .

Yes part of the site was the east Hull bus depot for Hull city transport.
It was built of ferros brick and a grade two listed building.
Funny how it got accidently demolished without checking first for listed status.
The car park for Morrisons was Hull Kingston Rovers car park. Where the store is now was where the pitch and the stands where and where Morrisons elivery road and staff parking is where the bus depot was.

Hi everyone,

I've just found this forum and thread whilst researching the Withernsea to Hull Railway line. I recently came across some footage of the whole line, filmed from the cab of a train travelling the line in 1957, which I've uploaded to Youtube. The link to this footage is here...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFfy5ZVi-XA

Southcoates Station and Holderness Road crossing (including footbridge!) appear from approximately 2 minutes and 55 seconds in to the film.

Thought I'd post the link here as I thought it would be of interest to some of you.

Cheers

Tim

Excellent footage. I was sat there watching it with a smile on my face when it got into Hull as i remember some of the landmarks and many of the bridges are still there.
I too use to run onto the top of that bridge when a train was coming just like those people stud on it in the film.

Thanks for that. :)

I was born in Hull in 1950 but was taken away in 1956 and never saw it again until a few years ago. I'm now trying to piece together memories of my childhood. I saw timnuttall2000's video of the Withernsea to Hull line and was fascinated to see images of a ride which my mother used to take me on. I'm particularly interested in the buildings seen from the train. Is there a higher resolution version of the film? Presumably one at normal speed would be?

Thanks for posting the link for the footage of the Withernsea - Hull train...brilliant...a journey I made frequently as a child  :D

As there are a few people with interests in or a connection to the railways I would like to mention a forthcoming Railway Exhibition at the Carnegie Heritage Centre scheduled for Saturday February 25th.

We would be particularly interested to see any Railway Memorabilia and related items of interest:

http://www.carnegiehull.co.uk/carnegie-heritage-centre.php

I will post a flyer of the event here a bit nearer the time.
