Can you anyone read this occupation ?
The place is Ilkeston Derbyshire
On the 1861 he is a chimney sweep
Looks like Ramonear ? Rainwear ??? :-\
I think I may have found him on the 1841 but then he is a higler (haggler/dealer)
Any help appreciated

Could it say Romany-er? (phonetically)
I think some of the travellers were higlers and dealers.

Person wasn't of Norwegian or Swedish descent were they? I did all sorts of searches and came up with Romanor at http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Norwegian_and_Swedish_Travellers which ties in slight with Elizabeths account.

Could it be;
Ramoneur - chimney sweep
Les
(no doubt now, as I just saw his occupation in the 1861 Census - "a chimney sweep")

Ramoneur, Chimney Sweep, from the French ramoner to sweep.

Dear All
Thanks for your replies
I think the ramoneur for chimney sweep looks likely, particularly as his occupation was that in 1851. If so, it takes me back into his area of origin.

Yes he chimneys swept - French Ramoneur is for chimney sweep - was he an ancestor of yours?
