Title: Grange Farm, Sunderland
Post by: el_torro on Thursday 20 December 07 11:45 GMT (UK)
In 1944, Dennis George Tilt married a Mavis Povah in `The Parish Church of Grangetown` (which is this?). Both were in the forces, Dennis `Gunner R.A.` and Mavis `A.T.S.`. Both give their address as `Grange Farm`, which I believe was, or is, in the Grangetown area and may now be a garden nursery.

Does anyone know if Grange Farm was being used to house military personnel during this time or would this have been the home of one of them. The occupation of Dennis`s father, George Tilt, is either `Maulster` (to do with beer making), or `Moulder`, the writing being indistinct and Mavis`s father, William Povah, is a `Corn Merchant`

What is interesting, to me that is, is the fact that a year later, in 1945, a William Robert Tilt married Elsie Stephenson in Sunderland and William`s occupation has previously been stated as a `Brewer` (Maulster?) for the now defunct, Vaux Brewery.

William R and Elsie resided at 3, Salem Hill South, Hendon, where I was born, and I have yet to establish the connection between Dennis and William.

Any help/info re the above would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Jim

See http://www.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice/dro.nsf/vwebplaces?OpenView&Startkey=A

According to this, the Parish Church of Grangetown is St Aidan's.

As an extra bit of info, my wife's ancestors farmed at Grange Farm, also Ryhope Grange Farm, throughout the 19th century - and into the 20th.  The Ryhope Grange buildings is apparently, as others have said, still there on the roadside with the garden centre behind.  It would be interesting if any kind soul could provide any photos of the current buildings (or indeed of any the old times).

My wife's family is Lee - who intermarried a number of times with another Durham farming family, the Mallams.

Thank`s to everyone for their response, and oldspook, you can get a limited view of what`s left of the farm using the Google Map:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?near=SR2+9SU&q=grange+farm+nursery%2C+ryhope&f=p&btnG=Search+Maps&rl=1

The present day nursery appears to be encircled by private housing.

Anyone know of any websites re the A.T.S. in Sunderland around 1944?

Cheers,

Jim

Hello oldspook

Welcome to rootschat: I hope that you will enjoy it and find it helpful.

You say
"As an extra bit of info, my wife's ancestors farmed at Grange Farm, also Ryhope Grange Farm, throughout the 19th century - and into the 20th. "
This implies that Grange Farm was separate from Ryhope Grange Farm - if that is correct please can you tell us where Grange Farm was?

All the best

Whellan's 'History, Topography, and Directory of the County of Durham, 1894.' lists the following:

Ryhope
Farmers
Laws, Mansfield G, Ryhope grange
Lee, Miss Eleanor, Grange
Lee, George
Lee, Joseph, Ryhope grange
Mallam, Thomas, Ryhope grange

Burdon
Farmers
Mallam, George

Re photos, I may be going along that way during the next few days and if I do I will try and take photos of Ryhope Grange.

Thanks for prompt replies.  It is a bit unclear exactly where the various farmhouses were - but Ryhope Grange is the northern lot - which is I think still surviving, and just down the road on the east side was the Grange - now under housing and playing fields.

Durham County Council's GIS on http://www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/usp.nsf/pws/gis+-+online+mapping
is marvellous for the early mapping up to the present day. I have used it a lot to find the old farms in the 1850s. Look at the circa 1894-1899 map to see clearly the two Granges.

Go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and do a coordinate search to centre the map on 440930, 554190 which is the farm.

Hi

There was a heavy AA gun site on what is now the Grangetown Industrial Estate.  The site was at map reference

NZ405540

It is shown as Q on the sketch map of heavy AA gun sites on

http://www.bpears.org.uk/NE-Diary/Bck/BSeq_01.html

The guns would have been fired by Royal Artillery personnel but quite possibly aimed by ATS personnel using radar.

Good luck

All the best to Rootschat users.

I too have a distant relative John Spedding Sutherst who gives his address on his Short Service Attestation as Grange Farm Ryhope. Was there an answer to the Question was this a military camp in the 1914-1919 war?
Many thanks

Hello MKGHNurse

Welcome to RootsChat and I hope that you will find us friendly and helpful.

This thread is about Ryhope Grange farm in the 2nd World War, ~1939 to 1945.  It looks as if it was used to billet the crew of an anti-aircraft gun in that war.

I think if John Spedding Sutherst gives Grange Farm Ryhope as his address on his attestation form then that would be where he was living before he joined the army.  You might be able to find him by looking at the 1911 census.

All the best

In the 1911 census a John Sutherst, born 1863 (Head) and a John Sutherst born 1894 (Son) are living at Ryhope Grange

Hi again

I have had a quick look at his service record and it is evident that Grange Farm, Ryhope was his family's address: his father was still living there in 1921 (when his medals were posted). Sadly John Spedding Sutherst died from wounds in 1917.

All the best
