1861
park Rd
Ilkeston
Derbys
William baker head 38 Frame Work knitter
sarah wife 33 Housekeeper
John son 12 Iron Stone Miner
Francis son 10
Mary daughter 7
Edward son 5
moses son 2
William son 3mths
all b. Ilkeston
RG9 2437 48 40
This looks like the same family as 1871
I'm not sure waht you mean by "I don't think this is him"-do you mean the Moses you found in the 1881 is not him -if so is it because they were Coal miners
Frame Work Knitting and Coal mining were 2 of the main industries in Ilkeston at that time

Possibly his birth reg
Moses baker
Sept qtr 1858
basford

This moses seems to disappear after 1881
There are a couple of other Moses bakers b. Ilkeston but they are quite a bit younger than this Moses.
What information do you have on him??

hi Suz, thanks for all your work,
i was trying to determine if that moses on free bmd is the same moses on 1861,71 and 81 that you have looked up
do you think this moses on freebmd is the same moses as on the 3 censuses? there is a year difference, that is what i am trying to dertermine, is Basford near Ikleston (sorry i spelt in wrong on the original post) please?
that is what i am trying to determine before i order the cert. to see who his parent are?
we were thinking basford moses may have gone out of country but he didnt if he is the same person on freebmd and the 3 censuses , sorry this is so confusing...

Basford is a registration district which covers part of nottinghamshire and part of Derbyshire Ilkeston is one of the places which come under Basford district.
it is quite confusing being on the border -and there is also a town called Basford -which is in Nottinghamshire.
Remember when looking at BMD's it gives the registration district -which is not (necessarily) the town/village where they were born, but the registration DISTRICT -which can cover a wide area
Sorry about putting 1859 -it should be 1858-I will edit it
I cannot see any other birth reg which would fit.
Ages on census can sometimes be a little misleading - as the enumerator would only enter the age he was told -and depending on what part of the year the person was born can make a difference -
e.g. Moses was age 2 on 1861 census
His birth was registered (we think) July -Sept 1858
so July -sept 1859 he would be 1
and July-Sept 1860 he would be 2
mar/April at the time of the 1861 census he would still be 2
I live quite close to Ilkeston
Moses may well have left the country-as there is no sign of him on 1891/1901 census

I don't know if you ever got an answer to your questions. I just happened to come across this page while Googling my great, great grandfather Moses Baker. He lived at 5 Slade Street. My mom says they moved to the US around 1890--which would explain why he is no longer in the census. I am giving my mom a link to this page--I'm sure she'll be happy to share any other information that she has!

Thank you for responding, since 2007, I think we have discovered that our Moses was from Sussex, wishing you all the best with your family history
