Hello Dee and friends,
You may remember the long rigmarole with Rose Dobson earlier this year! Well I now have a totally unexpected member of my Mother's family who emigrated to Australia in 1841. We have just received the copy of a letter written by him on the 26 Dec 1841. This is so exciting to see an actual letter written by a Great Great Uncle. It is very hard to read but states they arrived in Port Adelaide on the 12 September 1841.
Mentioned in the letter are a Mr Dashwood (believed to have become Police Commissioner found on Australian Biog Web site) and a Mr Lovejoy and there is talk of cattle and of a bull that they brought from home " is safe and well". John talks of a house being built and ready in a week but Dashwood and Lovejoy are at "Captans Fields" writing very difficult.
We would be grateful for any help,
Abiam

Hi Abiam,
Unfortunately there is no mention of your John WISE in BISA ....The Biographical Index of South Australians. If there had been, it would have made the search for information so much easier.
However, there is this possibility of his arrival......
from http://www.familyhistorysa.info/
WEST / (WISE?) John arrived 1841-11-20 on Orissa from London 1841-06-26
Sources given as the .....
Manifests of Vessels Arriving from Overseas 1838-42, SA Archives, GRG 41/8 (formerly A 743)
Newspaper passenger lists
There is also this marriage of a John WISE.....
John WISE aged 33 and single married Ann WILSON aged 24 and single on 3rd May 1850 at Holy Trinity Church Adelaide.
Fathers were not recorded
Ref: Ade V 4/83
If you think this could be your John Wise, there are the births of a couple of children. What do you think?

......just checked the Deaths index and information is basic.......
John WISE aged 35 status not known died 11 June 1854

But it does look like the John Wise who married Ann Wilson.

I'll post the births of both children of John Wise and Ann Wilson. as they were both born before the death of John Wise. (How annoying that the father's name wasn't given at the marriage!)
William WISE born 19 Feb 1851 at Nr the Meadows
Ref = Ade 3/171
Arthur WISE borm 28 Aug 1853 at Parkhurst

If you think this is probably your John Wise, Abiam, (and I think it probably is), then I'll see what else I can find about the children.

The son Arthur is listed in BISA.
Got to go do the Christmas food shop now, but will post the information when I get back.

Hello Dee,
We are convinced you have the right man! Firstly I made an error in the first post it was the 23 November 1841 that he arrived in Adelaide. We have be doing a lot of Googling and reckon he possibly went out as a servant? general factotem? to Mr Dashwood and his family.
We think he started off at or near Eyers Flats and Captons Fields which were near to Adelaide. He talks of 500 head of Oxen - I wonder if you can tell us of a website thay gives a good history of the area in the 1840's in relation to new arrivals and cattle farming.
We are very grateful for the information you have found and would like you to find more if it is possible.
I did look on the BISA for John but no luck. Look forward to hearing from you,
Abiam

Hi Abiam
The following link is a good source for historic place names in South Australia - but I cannot see the names you have mentioned listed. I wonder if they were property [farm] names. You may like to have a browse.

Cheers & Seasons Greetings

Edit
Found a reference to Ayres Flats - states is may be mispelt and should be Eyres Flats about 6 miles from Clarendon. Clarendon is a pretty spot in the Adelaide Hills.
You can zoom out from the following link to see its position from the City of Adelaide.

About to go cook my evening meal now, Abiam....will post whatever else I can find afterwards. I already have Arthur's marriage.

I looked at Emily Wise' death and thought 'hm' 1952 thats not that long ago! I forget that I'm now living in 2007 soon to be 8! Anyone know that feeling?
Well Dee you've given me enough to keep me occupied all day. I am delighted you have found so much - we may even come across a living relative!

Thanks Abiam. :D :D
If you go to
http://www.pictureaustralia.org/
and put the names of some of the places such as Yankalilla into the search engine, or Dashwood etc, you may find pictures from the 1800s and early 1900s that are in the South Australian Australiana Collection. Each little picture is a link.
It might give you an idea of where John Wise lived. And there is a picture of George Frederick Dashwood.

Just started looking at your link and there is Captain Field's house. Now we know it was a building not a field!

:D Abiam!
John Wise's death was listed in the Government Gazette in 1854.
He also appears in the Cemetery Index of the South Australian Genealogy Society. I've made a note of it on my list of things to check next time I get to visit the library.....could be a while though.

There's a death listed in the newspaper notices for an Annie Kennedy nee Wise for 1987. I've added that to the list to try to check as well. With luck it could have some children's names on it.

Hello Heather,
Firstly may I wish you a very Happy Christmas, although of course you have already had Christmas Day!
Thank you very much for this information but I think there are discrepancies with 'my John Wise'.
I have been given the date of death for John as 11 June 1854 you have 28 January 1952. This would mean that his son Arthur who was born 28 August 1853 was born about 19 months after John's death. Of course there could have been an affair! But on the BISA the father of Arthur is given as John.
I have traced Emily Roebuck Fenton back to the 1871 census to parents Henry R Fenton b. Yorkshire and Emily Fenton B. Sussex with three daughters all born in Surrey and Emily is there aged one.
Also you have John Wise as son of Henry I have him as son of George Wise of Braywoodside Berkshire.
I am very much a novice at all this but I think you have followed Emily Roebuck Fenton as Emily Roebuck. Do let me know what you think of 'my' facts and thank you again for all your work,
Very best wishes,
Abiam

Dee, Cando and everyone,
Some great success!
Maddie my 3rd cousin, discovered through Rootschat, has done a lot of searching on the web and found some wonderful information! We now have photo's of the Parkhurst Stables, interior and exterior, where John Wise stayed when he arrived in 1841.
The area which eventually became part of Kungarilla, even Eyre's Flat is mentioned, of which I could find very little. The area at one time was known as Dashwood Gully after G F Dashwood who we believe our Great,Great, Grand Uncle travelled with.
BUT, this is the best bit!!!
John Wise died in 1854 and Maddie has found where he was buried. All we had before this was the date of death. Below is the plaque commemorating those buried at the Tabernacle at Tabernacle Road, Victor Harbour. And there eighth from the top on the left is JOHN WISE 1854. There are photo's of the monolith erected when the little church building disappeared in memory of the Rev Newland and even a sketch of the tiny church erected in 1846
I don't know whether this will be clear enough I hope so. This makes up for having letters which are so faint that we are struggling to read them.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank those Roots chatters who offered or tried to do something with them. Unfortuntely we don't have access to the originals.
Finally a BIG thank you to Maddie for her patient searching,
Abiam

Abiam
What wonderful information - you must be thrilled. :D
Cheers
Cando

Abiam, that's excellent news for you.
I've just been looking at my Street Directory of Victor Harbor to locate Tabernacle Road. It is actually in the area called Encounter Bay. (And the Harbor part of Victor Harbor is actually spelt without the "u". ::) )
I am wondering if there may be more information in either of the local libraries here.....there is one in Victor Harbor and one in Goolwa, which has an excellent family history room. Next time I am visiting one of them, I shall try to remember to check. :D

Dee,
It would be great if you could look in the libraries. The thing to find out now is why and how he died so young only 40 with a young wife and two babes. Must have been very hard for her,
Wishing you all a very Happy New Year,
Abiam
-
Hello everyone,
Just to let you know the latest on our saga!
Having sent emails to anyone I could think of and with much help from RC - it has paid off! I was left with wanting to know why he died at 40 and now I know....
John Wise owned land and cattle. He was thrown from his galloping horse whilst mustering cattle near Tonkalilla Beach and severely injured. ( there are so many spellings of this name). A companion ( a Mr Tonkin) got him to the whaling station at Encounter Bay where he died. I assume that must have been by horse and cart which can't have helped.
I now have a photo of John's second son Arthur and his widow Anne's 2nd husband and more about her life.
About 2 weeks ago we didn't even know he went to Australia!
Thanks to everyone once again for your help,
Abiam
-
That's terrific, Abiam! The spelling is now Tunkalilla. The hillsides around there can be very steep......
So glad you have had so much success....
