Is Shakespeare Street Ardwick still there - does anybody know please ??
Annie :)

Good morning Annie,
Shakespeare and Ardwick rang some bells. Shakespeare St produced no hits, but somewhere at the back of my mind I remember attending a meeting so I tried Shakespeare Community Centre and found this
http://www.mancat.ac.uk/community/shakespeare.htm
It is located on Shakespeare Walk M13 which could just about be Ardwick. That area was pretty well knocked about in the 60\70's so perhaps there is an echo of an earlier street name there but I have no idea really ???
The link to streetmap.co.uk works so you can see it's proximity to Ardwick

And i've just found it on 1915 Godfrey map

It was in the location of the Shakespeare centre, so there is an echo of the name. It ran between Stockport Rd and Plymouth Grove. Do you want a scan of the map?
Have a great day
Cheers

Hi guys.
Tony has the right place for Shakespeare St. It was there up to 1970 or so, then replace by grim estate centred on Lauderdale Crescent. There was a huge pub called the Plymouth Grove Hotel on the corner of Plymouth Grove end of Shakespeare St that survived a few years longer; http://www.images.manchester.gov.uk pic no. m19588

The only thing I remember about Shakespeare street was the old Victorian School Clinic!. Many the school kid has come back through those dark doors with a head full of Gentian violet!! Oh! happy days!!

And thank you for the photo references Barbara ! ..... but is it still there .... or has it all been torn down ??
Gentian violet cathaldus ! ................ I'd forgotton about that stuff !! :-\ :-\ :-\

And Annie a scan by my tomorrow if that's OK :)

I'm pretty sure its all gone Annie :( Further south on Plymouth Grove is Elizabeth Gaskell's house which is preserved and has a blue plaque, but this bit was all redeveloped in the 70s- and is now being redeveloped again. I think this area is now the 'Plymouth Grove Village' referred to here: http://www.grovevillage.co.uk/regeneration.htm.
School clinics aargh! Mine was in Levenshulme Town Hall as was, later antique market.. I was given the most unflattering NHS glasses in the world, not even the John Lennon sort - nasty white plastic frames :P And as for the verruca treatment (involved a large scalpel/scraping implement) I'm still wincing! Never got nits though, maybe the glasses scared 'em off ;D

My Mum used to live on Shakespear Street, I think in the 1940s.
I don't have any photos but if you would like me to ask my Mum if she recalls anything just let me know.
Best wishes

Hi Liverpool Annie, only just seen your topic re Shakespeare Street Ardwick C-0n-M Manchester so hoping the topic is still active. I spent my childhood during the 1950's living at 15 Shakespeare Street. We owned a large 3 floored end terrace house within a block of 3. Most of the properties were lodging houses. I'm enclosing a link to a Facebook site that will be of help to you if you still have queries. There's lots of members and lots of pic of Ardwick on the site and everyone is really helpful. Shakespeare Street and most of the area was demolished in the 1960 but some of it does remain e.g The Plymouth Grove Hotel. Here's the link for you for Hulme, c.on.m, all saint.ardwick people . https://www.facebook.com/groups/104526155529/10153475789300530/?comment_id=10153475814810530¬if_t=group_comment. Regards Jackie.

Hi Jackie - sadly Liverpool Annie has passed away - if you look underneath her name on the left hand side you will see a note to that effect ..
RIP Annie :(
