The Gentleman's Magazine, which was read throughout the English speaking world, was founded in London by Edward Cave in January, 1731. Publication of the magazine ceased in September 1907. I spotted an online edition of the July 1842 Gentleman's Magazine (http://books.google.com/books?id=g_QIAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA426&lpg=PA426&dq=massey+estate+co+clare&source=web&ots=30mHlqiQLu&sig=bBzbMKmVpKYyPhsZHQ_XyS48YaA) ... on page 426 there are obituaries for Sir Hugh D. Massey, Bart; Francis Newcombe, Post Captain RN.,CB.; Admiral Wolseley and Captain E. C. Astley, Knt., RN.

I've known of the existence of this magazine for awhile. I would love to know how I could browse copies of this magazine, at least for the late 18th/early 19th centuries, but suspect that, living in Oz, it won't be possible! :( :(

I haven't tried this site but it seems that they have a great many editions of the Gentleman's Magazine available for online search and pay-per-view or purchase http://www.midlandshistoricaldata.org/SHPLoader.aspx?x=books_gm.html

thanks for this thread. I have reference that several of my "Gentlemen" have orbits in both these magazines but haven't seen the full script yet.
I shall take a browse through the links - I'll probably lose myself in them reading the other articles too ;D

Thanks very much for the links, folks! :D
I've had a bit of a look, and it seems that it would be a huge job searching if you don't know what year you are looking for! I'll do a bit of browsing around, though.

Hi Marie,
There's a search facility on the right hand side of the page in the link. I searched for Obituary and received several results.

You can also put in your search engine...
Google books..http://books.google.com/
and a name that might be in the Gentlemans mag..and search..
up come lots of historical books to look in.
-
You can also search Ancestry define Newspaper and Magazine database, and it will give you the year and page but not the article details.

There are also a lot of collected editions on the Internet archive
http://www.archive.org
These seem to be not original edtions though there is a lot of material there
This is searchable (when you have located an edition), but not searchable as a whole

Hello. I'm anxious to read the obituary of Dr William BENTON of Barton-Upon-Humber, which was published in the Gentleman's Magazine of 2nd January 1800. Can anyone help me to access a copy? Many thanks.

A search for [ "william benton" + humber ] in Google Book Search comes up with an obituary of farmer William Benton of Barton-Upon-Humber from a Gentleman's Magazine of 1807 - any help?

Many thanks. The farmer was son of the surgeon. I've discovered a full run of the magazine in one of the local libraries so hope to be able to obtain copies of the obits for father and son. Thanks again.
