I wonder if any kind person can find me Robert Brearley Oddie born about 1850 in Rochdale on the 1871 census. I know that he moved to Darlington as he married there in 1877 but i believe that he was still living in Lancashire before then. Details of parents and siblings would be great and where he was living at the time.
many thanks

Hi Julie
According to a family tree on ancestry Matthew Oddie married Rebecca Brearley on the 30 April 1840.
plus it says Matthew Oddie's born 5 Feb 1812, that his parent's were Matthew Oddie born 5 July 1774 and Margaret Isherwood born 3 Feb 1778.
But you would have to double check that its right before putting it in your family tree

I think this is the marriage ref although they have spelt Rebecca's surname wrong
ODDIE Matthew to BRIERLEY Rebecca at Prestwich, St.Mary Bury CE18/3/399

Many many thanks again.

Not 5 minutes ago, I just finished watching the English TV series, "Who do you Think You Are?" (new on Australian TV), and the guest for this episode was Bill Oddie, tracing his family who were cotton weavers in the 1800's. I remember Bill saying he was born in Rochdale in the 1940's. Unfortunately, the names of his ancestors escape me (yes, I know it was only 5 minutes ago).
Anyway, I thought it was such a co-incidence.

Hello Julia,
my name is Lara Oddie and Robert Brearley Oddie was one of my ancestors. My grandfather, John A. Oddie did a lot of research on my family tree before he died and passed all this information on to my dad, Hugh Oddie. If you could contact me, please do.

There is some talk of Grindleton here where Roger Brierley was minister supported by the Oddies between about 1615 and 1621.

At the time of the Restoration, the opening of a locked chest in a remote hovel in Westmorland by a young woman reveals the unexpected life story of her recently-deceased father, a man she has barely known thanks to his self-imposed silence…
‘A Certain Measure of Perfection’ is constructed around genuine historical characters, including the minister himself, Roger Brierley – a man forgotten by history but one whose abilities went far beyond his rather unexceptional education. Working from an obscure Northern backwater and aided only by candle and condenser, miles from the centres of ecclesiastical power and learning, he completed one of the most extraordinary translations of the century, bringing the dreaded ‘Teutonic theology’ to life in the English language and sending a ‘movement of the Spirit’ not only across the hills of the North but subsequently also through the tightly cramped, jettied-building streets of the City of London.
