Title: Any ideas when this might have been taken?
Post by: janan on Friday 14 December 07 12:56 GMT (UK)
Hi
Just been sent another photo. This one is of Hannah Carver nee Saunders wife of the gentleman on the left. She was born in 1862. Any guesses as to when it was taken?
Thank you in anticipation
Jan ;)

Hello Jan,

I would say , the photo was taken in the late 1880's early 1890's , but do wait for the experts for a better date.

Thanks for your thoughts Jim.

I was thinking she was probably in her 20's. She married in 1893 but I'm thinking this was before then, not sure though. It's puzzling me what she was doing in London - Hannah lived in Luton and as far as I can gather the family never had much money so wouldn't have been taking trips to London. And the dress looks as if it would have cost a bit - very strange ???

The name of the photogrpaher helps a bit: T G Fisher 174 Edgeware Road, Hyde Park.

I found Thomas George Fisher, photographer, 174 Edgeware Road, Paddington. He had those studios 1900 - 1906, and died 1922. He was succeeded by his brother, Thompson Fisher.

Dear Jan,

Judging from pictures of my own family --- I would say 1905.  The collar and hairstyle are 'clinchers' for me.

Wonderful  :) :)
Thank you jc and jim

I can't take any credit for the scan the picture was emailed to me by my mum's cousin - Hannah is their Grandma.

Something about the hair makes it look around the time you suggest jc but that would make her 43-46. She looks younger than that to me ??? :-\

Jan ;)

Thanks Percy and Les  :)  Looks like she wore well then despite a hard life and a penchant for the bottle!

I think if it had been earlier, the jacket bodice would have been a tighter fit, which helped vere me  towards the later date.
I think she looks possibly late 30's- early 40s,  her eyelids/brow are sagging not as taut as a younger lady. Perhaps she looked after herself well and liked the cold cream!

Could it possibly be a daughter or younger sister?

The hairstyle that she has is known as a pompadour style and has the front, side and back hair taken up over pads to get a "roll" effect as seen here, the hair is then fixed/styled into a bun on the crown. This style was in fashion from about 1895/7 until 1910 when the looser pompadour style came about. JC's guess at this study having been taken around 1905-08 would be about right as the photographer Thomas George Fisher (b1868 Greenwich-d1922 Greenwich) took over the business of photographer at 174 Edgeware Road in 1899/1900 from Thompson Fisher (b 1863 Carlisle-d1904 Hackney). T.G. Fisher stayed at 174 Edgeware Road trading as a photographer until about 1907 or just after, as far as I can make out.

Old Rowley
Thanks for the info on the hairstyle and photographer which seems to fix the date at around 1900-1907.

Thanks for more lovely restores :)

The photo is definitely of Hannah- my Gran had a copy of it on her mantlepiece but when she died my Granddad burnt it!
