Your information is very informative and a great guide! As I am not sure if my ggg grandmother was actually born in Scotland, is there a website that would show her as being listed without my having to purchase credits? Then if her name is listed I would be able to purchase credits to view the info? My ggg grandmother was listed in all the censuses except one as being born in Marylebone. In one census, it says Scotland as her place of birth. We have searched extensively in the Marylebone parish records and there is no trace of her birth (in abt 1805) or anyone who may be related to her. I'm afraid of having to pay the fee for the website then typing in her name and having it come up empty.
Any ideas would be most appreciated.
Thank you!

The initial search on Scotland's People is free; you only pay to view the actual record. Obviously there is likely to be more than one person with the same name, so the more information you can put in to the search, the better. If you can narrow down the years you are searching that will help a lot, then you won't waste so many credits. It might be worth searching the free sites first (LDS, FreeCen etc) to see if there are any likely candidates, or to help narrow down the search.

Hi Caliope,
I've split your post out from the research tips thread as it wouldn't get the best attention there.
What detail do you have about your ggg grandmother? Name, approx birth?
All the best,
Pam
