Title: Hospital Blues?
Post by: joboy on Sunday 09 December 07 00:47 GMT (UK)
I had a cousin in WW2 who was wounded and returned to UK.
He visited my family and was dressed in
'Hospital Blues' which was a really bright blue uniform (looked like flanell) with a crisp white shirt and a bright red tie.
When was this type of uniform instituted and is it still in use?
An image would be appreciated.

Hello joboy,

I found this thread on the Great War Forum and according to Sue Light "they were being worn during the Boer War period and were usual dress in all military hospitals, both large and small, by 1903."

I wore same uniform (isofar as I can remember) when allowed out of Rinteln Military Hospital (Germany BAOR) during a stay there in 1960

Well...I can tell you that they are no longer used, as most members of the forces are now treated in civvy hospitals.

I have never seen them in use whatsoever, and I have been around since the late 80s (with the Army Medical Services)

I would presume they disappeared in the early 1970s when the IRA threat ensured that walking out in uniform was stopped...

I have some pics which I thought were already on the computer, I'll scan some laters
