Hi Donna,
I've got a few from the Ayr area, if you wouldn't mind checking:
Thomas Jamieson (born c1790, Ayr) married to Ann Baird (born c1790, Ayr)
children were:
Barbara Jamieson (born 1811, Craigie, Ayr)
Robert Jamieson (born 1813, Craigie, Ayr)
Christian Jamieson (born 1818, Symington, Ayr)
James Jamieson (born 1822, Symington, Ayr)
Mathew Begg (born c1790, Ayr) married to Janet Craig (born c1790, Ayr) children were:
Adam Begg (born 1812, Ochiltree, Ayr)
Helen Begg (born 1815, Ochiltree, Ayr)
Robert Jamieson and Helen Begg married in Auchinleck, Ayr in 1835. They are on the 1851 census, still living in Auchinleck.
Thanks

Hi Donna
I'm wondering if you've got anything for Cecilia Mair, widow of John Miller. She's recorded under her maiden name in Ayr in the 1841 census, living with her son John. She was born in Galston & lived in Maybole after her marriage.
The other one I'm looking for is a Julia Downie, recorded as aged 70 in Ayr in 1841. I don't know if Downie is a maiden or married name.
Blanched
-
hi blanched
i cant find a cecilia but there is a mrs miller, died 31 oct 1842,wife of john miller, baker, age 45,cause of death fever
and the only downie i have is ann ,died 27 sep 1842,isle lane, age 65,cause of death fever
donna
-
Thanks Donna, I think "Mrs Miller" (did our lang deids do this just to be awkward?!) may have been the granddaughter-in-law of Cecilia - there was a grandson John Miller born 1805 so a 45-year old wife in 1842 would be quite possible, particularly with the baker connection.
I think Julia may be one of those who never gets traced - she pops up in the 1841 census living in the same household as Cecilia & her family. She has the same surname as Cecilia's daughter-in-law. There's no sign of a birth under Downie & I don't have any confirmed birth information for Jane Downie (d-i-l of Cecilia) either so don't know if she had brothers or aunts by marriage. Anyway worth knowing that there's not much chance of tracing either death.
Thanks again, Blanched
-
Hi Donna
;D Thanks a bunch!

Hi Donna

It seems that the spelling of McFadyen depended on the scribe as most folks were illiterate when it came to Census and Parish records. I've seen McFadzean, McFadyin , and McFadzen used all within the same family
Does'nt make it easy Thanks any way Donna Dof

Hi Donna,
If it's not too much trouble could you see if you have a death for Alexander Wyllie,
unfortunately I have no birth date. ::) All I know is that his father John Wyllie was living in Gallowberry Ayrshire and remarried in 1713, so it may be too early for your records ???
Thanks Crystal :D

there is a few wylies one alexander think it may be a bit late for yours but i will put it up any way
alexander wylie,died 15 oct 1853,over mill,age 7, scarlet fever

Hi Donna
could you see if there are any Given/Givens there
I would also be interested in some of the Wylie names you have
found I am not sure but I think gggggrandmother Agnes Wylie lived in ayrshire
before coming to Port Glasgow
thanks
Elaine
-
:D Thank You so much for looking Donna,
This particular Alexander had a son so I think that rules him out, but it may fit in somewhere else.
I have just realised that I did not ask about his son James, but he was living in Forfar ??? and his sons were James, Thomas, John and William, who I know went to Barbados and I have details for.
:-\ The Wyllies seem to have had quite a large family in Ayrshire, descending from the Laird of Gallowberry, Stewarton Parish - William Wyllie or Wylie born 1560.
I have a few Agnes Wyllies, Elaine what year are we looking for ??? One of them was buried in Stewarton cemetery 28-10-1890 aged 8, her mother was Elizabeth who was also buried there19-2-1918 aged 75 with two of her sons as well.
Thanks again Crystal :D
-
Hi Crystal
gggggrandmother was Agnes Wylie born 1826 in Ireland
I am not sure of the rest of the family apart from Alexander being her brother
I think his birthdate is 1823 dont know anything else about him
I have traced some of gggggranfathers (Given ) family to Ayrshire
wondered if this is where the Wylies and the Given's met
Elaine

:o :o :o :o
Wow Donna that's some list, thank you so much for all that effort 8) 8)
I will see if I can match any up now, a couple look likely.
Reading the causes of death, don't things change ??? I can see where the phrase about being mortified comes from now.
Elaine, I have had a quick look through all my notes and as yet can not find a link to Givens but that's not to say it's not there :-\
The Wyllies seem to have scattered far and wide around the world in the later part of 1800's, America, Barbados, Burma, India, South Africa, Australia, Italy and Cuba to name a few, some becoming very prominent people of their time.
Kind regards Crystal :D

glad to be of help ,hope you have luck with some of them

Hi Donna,
This is a nice service that you are offering!
Could you check this person out for me?
James Balvaird LATIMER
[Not in the civil registers after 1855.
Known to be alive in 1813.
Sisters Margaret, Mary, Jane died in Edinburgh in 1840s.
Sister Catherine married James BALVAIRD.
JBL might have been connected with the horse racing in Ayr.]
Ta,
Capt Jock
-
hi capt jock
j.b latimer,died 8 june 1834,custom house clerk,age 47,suddenly !
there is only one other latimer listed so i will put it up for you
sarah latimer,died 20 april 1847,townhaed,age 1 yr 3 mths,whooping cough
hope this is of use to you
donna
-
Donna,
Many thanks for the rapid reply - greatly appreciated.
Can I take it that that is literally what it says in the register?!
[i.e. "suddenly", and e.g. no home address given.]
Good to get birth year as 1786/1787.
--------
The occupation certainly fits in well.
His father, Christopher LATIMER, was "onetime Collector of Excise for the Paddington District". His brother-in-law, James BALVAIRD (d.1815) , was "General Examiner of Excise".
----
It is interesting to speculate why he died at Ayr in 1834?
There is a family connection with the area, but it is later.
His cousin (once removed), Latimer WHITTLE, married Anne Steen KELLY in Coylton near Ayr on 20-SEP-1847.
[This too happened "suddenly", with the Banns only posted 2 days earlier!]
Hmm, maybe that young Elizabeth that you found, who died earlier that year, was a natural child of theirs?
[There seems to have been quite a nest of KELLYs in Coylton. They may well have been horse traders or trainers.]
LW was based at Oldstone near Antrim/Muckamore in Co Antrim in Ireland, where large horse fairs were held regularly, with buyers from England and Scotland attending.
[LW apparently lost a lot of money/property on the horses over the years, retiring to Jamaica even there struggling to retain the plantations that his grandfather Richard LATIMER had built up.]
Perhaps JBL was meeting up with LW (then just turned 21) at Ayr for a celebratory day at the races, and just got too overcome by the sight of so much non-taxable cash floating around!
Capt Jock
-
hi jock,
sorry no other info in the parish record, some of them put the home address, others their job, some have even less info, i did wonder about the word suddenly,as a lot have unknown written,so if they didnt know you would think they would put that, anyway im not going to start speculating i have enough trouble with the facts without adding my imagination to the mix :D
donna
-
Donna,
Sounds like 'tis a (typed) transcript that you have there.
[I'll have to check the original source to be sure.
Like all the good genealogists do ...!]
Thanks once again, greatly appreciated.

Hi Donna,
I was wondering if there was a death for a "AGNES GILLESPIE" (Gilespie, Glaspy, Glespie).
She was on the 1851 census as Head, a widower, age 62 with her surname written down as Glaspy.
Agnes was also born in Ireland and her last known address was Old Street, Girvan, Ayr.
If it isn't too much to ask and if you find any other Gillespies could you make a note of them for me? Most of my Gillespies were born in Ballantrae, Dailly, Girvan and Wigtown.
Thanks so much

Thanks so much for looking, Donna. As you said, none of the ages match to be my Hugh Parker, but at least I can cross this particular record source off my list of records to try. I notice that most of the deaths are of chilldren. I wonder if that reflects the true proportion of child to adult deaths in those days, or that a child's death was more likely to be noted in the parish records than an adult's death.

Dear Donna
Could you check your book and see if you have an entry for Agnes Fisher, who died between 1851 and 1854, we think in St. Quivox or Wallacetown.
Her maiden name was Wren or Rann, so it may be under that. her husband was John Fisher.
Thanks

Dear Donna
I have noticed that there has been no message from you on this thread since June.
It may be that you are replying to people through personal messages, or maybe you are unwell or overwhelmed by the volume of queries you have been receiving.
I hope you are alright. Can you let me know whether I should try elsewhere?
Thanks a lot

I've dipped in here sometimes but am a little confused. Do you mean deaths for the town of Ayr or is it Ayrshire? I ask as some people are enquiring about many other towns and I do have some missing people I would like to ask about but they are almost all Kilmarnock or Kilmaurs.

Hi McCann..I have just joined RootsChat because I saw that you were interested in the Mc Jannets and Muirs..this is part of my late Mother's family though my knowledge is quite sketchy. Gefling
-
Hi Gefling.
That is wonderful! What information do you have that shows there may be a connection?
I will give you as much as I have and maybe we can fill in some blanks.
Talk to you soon.
McCann

Hi McCann...I'm rather new to this and not very computer literate so please bear with me! My Mother was Maria Mackay;her father was John Mackay who was born in Ayr in1871;his parents were Alexander Mackay who was born in1833 and died on Nov.11th,1911 in Govan,Glasgow and Ann Muir McJanet who was born on South Corton Farm,Ayr on July,17th,1834 and, herself too, died in Govan onApril29th,1914. They were married on Jan.18th,1858.
Ann or Annie was the daughter of William McJanet,1790-1866,and Euphemia Muir,1792-1874.Ann was born on her maternal grandfather's farm which, incidently, was adjacent to Mt.Oliphant of Robert Burns fame!
This grandfather was Gabriel Muir,1768-1832,and his wife was Euphemia Baird who died in 1846.
Ann's father,William, was, also,a farmer who died in Maybole. His father was, also,William and his Mother was Margaret Bryan.
The Alexander whom Ann married was born in Armadale in 1833. His parents were Alexander,1790-1855 and Mary Tunnock,1793-1857. Both died in Wallacetown.
I'm sure you will have most of this information already but what excited me was that you appeared to be researching my Mother's family!
My Mother was one of six-Alexander[1912-1914];Maria[1915-2007];John[1917-1965];William[1920-1992];Robert[1924-1993] and Annie[1928-2002].
Look forward to hearing from you and thankyou so much for taking time to reply....Gefling.
-
Well Gefling. It looks as though we are third cousins (or something like that). Your mother, Maria, and my grandmother, Mary, were first cousins. Mary's father is Robert Steele MacKay who happens to be John G. MacKay's brother!
I did have most of the information you provided, except that I did not know William McJanet's (married to Margaret Bryan) father was William. And I did not have some of the place information you provided.
I have some dates and information that you didn't have as well. I have Alexander MacKay's parents and Mary Tunnock's parents. Also, I have a copy of Mary Tunnock's settlement (Will). In fact, I have copies of most of the birth, marriage, or death entries. I can send you everything I have if you would like. I also got in touch with someone who was distantly related to Gabriel Muir. His brother, Andrew came to the U.S. and wrote Gabriel a letter. That letter is now in a museum in Minnesota (or some place like that). She provided me with a transcript of the letter. It was great to have some evidence of the history.
Anyway, my email address is (*). If you would like to email me, I will send you everything I have.
I look forward to hearing from you, cousin Gefling.
Sincerely, McCann.

Hi Cousin McCann...this is all so interesting! I would be very interested in the information you have. The Web Site has removed your e-mail address and suggest I use PM.However,I can't use that just yet as I am too new a member...catch 22! I will work on it,though.
My Mother,Maria, used to say that Alexander Mackay[Robert's Father]was a Sherrif in Ayr but I think that rather unlikely! Maria's brother Bob was called after your Robert which suggests that John Graham Mackay was very fond of his wee brother.
Thank-you again for all your time...it is much appreciated.
Best wishes,Gefling.
-
I agree. This is all very interesting. We'll get in direct touch eventually. Do you have any pictures of your grandfather, John, and his family? My grandmother followed my mom to the States in the 60's; so she left most of her personal stuff in Glasgow. I have a few black and whites of her and her husband, but other than that, all I really have are contemporary pictures.
The information I have has Alexander as a wood labourer, cutter, merchantile clerk, and by the time of his death...a law clerk. His father Alexander was an Inspector of the Poor and Merchant.
As you seem to be aware, mostly farmers on the other side (McJanet/Muir side).
I'll go back through and see what other interesting information I have.
Talk to you soon.

Hi McCann...I have some photographs, too. I have a really grainy one of Susan Mackay who was the youngest girl. I,also, have a small[what looks like a passport photo]photo of Robert Mackay's son John. I am sure I have a photo of Ann McJannet as an old lady and some of my grandfather,John, but, again, as an older man. I'm going to have to get some help from the younger family members in how I get them to you!
Alexander Mackay's father was a William Mackay who married Susanna Finlayson in 1789. According to the notes left by my mother, they were married in Haddington in East Lothian.William was born in 1768 whilst Susanna was born in 1770. Again, they were farmers. Her notes then include a Susanna with no surname who married a Richard Watkins in 1770 and then,a Susanna Craig who married an Alexander Cockburne in 1743. My Mother's notes don't explain these people though could this be the starting point for the ubiquitious name Alexander?!
Alexander Mackay[1833]had a bit of a drouth..he drank too much. As a result,Ann McJanet struggled to bring up her family. She seems to have been a feisty wee lady much loved by her children.
I would love to know what happened to your Robert. All of the family seem to have left Ayrshire no doubt looking for work in Glasgow. My John became a shipwright in the Glasgow yards. My Mother, always, said the Mackays were a clever family! I'm sure she was right!
Best wishes,Gefling.

Hi Gefling. I sent you a personal message on Friday. I suppose you didn't get it. When I sent it, though, there was no error message so I was hoping for the best. I'll try again.
Anyway, I am excited to hear that you do have some pictures and would love to see copies when you can get some assitance (and when we can finally manage to communicate directly). As promised, I will send you all that I have as well. I do have a copy of the marriage entry for William and Susanna - January 17, 1768, Parish of Humbie, East Lothian. I didn't have William's birth year or Susanna's birth year (thank you). I will see if I can find more information on them with that information. Although I do have that Susanna was from Ormiston, Haddington. It is wonderful to hear personal stories of the family. It has all been names and dates on paper until now.
Robert moved to Govan (lived at 49 Copland Road), married Mary Bain Cook in 1901 (at the Stanley House, South Avenue, Govan) and worked as an engine fitter. He died in 1920 (at 44) at the Gartlich Asylum, Eastern District of Cadder. I'll check with my mom to see if she has any personal stories to share. Their children were Mary (my grandmother) Robert, John and Aleck.
Are you and your family in Glasgow?
I will try to send you another personal message now.
All the best!

Could you please look and see whether there is a Wilhelmina Taylor married name Whyte/White born Kippen abt 1792. She was alive in Ayr in 1851 married to a william Wyte/white but deceased by 1861 as William white is a widower living with his daughter in 1861. I don't know when she died between those dates but I can find no record in the statutory death records after 1855 so I think she must have died before then. many thanks

Hi Donna,
I am wondering if James NIVEN and/or his wife Elizabeth NIVEN (ms BOYD) appear in your listing. James was born abt 1805 and Elizabeth was born about 1810 both in St. Quivox. I am unable to find their deaths on ScotlandsPeople, so I have a hunch that they died sometime between 1845 (son Robert was born) and 1855.
Thanks
Alison :-)

Maybe they all spoke spunny!! in them days
Do you know of anyone on the list who takes photos of headstones at the various Graveyards around Ayrshire.
I have three in mind. The latest being the one that you just sent and two more in the old Graveyard Riccarton
Be willing to pay.I am sure it would be a lot cheaper than me flying from Chicago.
Thanks Again

Hi Tam,
Sorry I don,t know anybody on the list who might take photos as i live in the West Midlands, England. I think the best thing for you to do is send a New Message in your own name with the names of the Graveyards, I know there are lots of nice people on chats who have been of a great help to me when i have asked for information. Do you have any other names you would like checking in MI books i have for St Quivox, Newton-on-Ayr and Ayr . I have about 8 books from several graveyards.

Hi folks
Donna doesn't seem to have been around for a while.
I have PMed her but meanwhile it might be a good idea to start a new thread, rather than add to this one - at least you are likely to get more readers that way.
Apologies in advance to Donna if she's just taking a break!
Kind regards, Arranroots
Edit: Donna has been in touch to say that she's unable to take on look-ups just now. Thanks for all your help so far Donna!
