Title: Dicksons Row Dublin
Post by: mnbarrett on Wednesday 05 December 07 14:42 GMT (UK)
Hi all

I hope someone can help point me in the right direction. Thanks to the online census i was finally able to find where my grandfather lived in Dublin in 1911. (i think i have checked almost every street in and around that area looking for a Behan family).

The question is now, does anyone have a link for a good map from around that time.
The address was Disksons Row, in Ushers quay.

I am familiar with Dublin, but its not showing up on Maps, so i'm guessing its long gone...

The new census thing is really great, I have been over 2 years back and forth to libraries and archives trying to find him, and it took all of 2 mins on the site. Yay finally a lead!

Any ideas about a map would be appreciated

Thanks

Yeah I used to work across the street from it.

I am guessing that it was probably knocked some time ago. Its just nice to see exactly where places used to be!

ah well. I can check the thoms at some point to see when it went.

Thanks though

Thanks for finding my website!  :)

My GGG Grandmother Mary Peel (nee Grey) died at 3 Dickson's Row (also spelt Dixon's) in 1873.  Other members of the family also lived there at Number 1.

I got a lot of the information from various Thom's Street Directories. I'm going through the 1911 Census at the moment (mainly the Ennumerator's Abstract and the Outbuildings Returns to see just what these cottages were like.  Having the census online is fantastic.

Unfortunately, I haven't got a map with it on.  I do have a picture of Dickson's Lane which I thought was interchangeable with Dickson's Row but the 1911 Census shows that these were two seperate streets, Dickson's Row off Robert Street and Dickson's Lane off Marrowbone Lane.  You live and learn!

hi Lorna, Michelle and Ev,,
I'm very interested in this topic and have been trying
to find a map for you Michelle but no luck so far.
I wonder does the national library have an old map of the area.
where is trish?(dublin1850) when you need her  :)(trish also has a great website)
I'm also glad of the chance to thank Lorna personally for her terrific
website which I have visited many times since I first found it a few years back.
on the site lorna you mention some of your family lived at number 93 cork street?
well right next door in number 92 was where my parents spent the first few months
of their marriage in 1940 .my mam who passed away in june 2006 told many
stories about the area and had a very funny story about her time  living in cork street.
by the 1940s number 92 was divided into seperate rooms and rented out.the census
online has many surnames I am familiar with through my mam's stories
sorry Michelle for hijacking your topic and will keep trying for that map.
                                                                           regards,anne

Hi Anne

Thanks for your message and I'm delighted that you find my website of use to you.

My Peel ancestors lived at 93 Cork Street between about 1894 and 1902.  My GG GrandfatherHenry Peel, ran a horse drawn cab business from there so I must see what the 1911 Census says about the outbuildings.  I only have one photo of the place from about ten years ago and it was in a very sorry state.  One thing I did notice, though, was that there was a gap in the pavement wide enough to allow a cab through so I'm wondering if there was an archway there allowing access to the rear of the buildings from off Cork Street?

Regarding Dickson's Row, I did buy a set of maps from the National Library a few years ago but unfortunately none of them are detailed enough to show all the Lanes, Rows and Courts.  I'd love to see one that does.

Best wishes

Lorna

Sorry, I was away in a very wet and windy Paris.

Here is the relevant part from a 1876 map.
It doesn't actually name Dickson's Row/lane but you can work out which ones they were from Robert Street and Marrowbone lane.

Dickson's Row ran from Robert Street to Bowe's lane (off Marrowbone lane). I think that makes it the one that on the map is directly opposite Newport Street

hi Trish, thanks for answering the call.
there was a little bonus for me too because poole street
is on your map too and I had just found my Kavanagh family
living there on the 1911 census and was'nt sure where it was.
I hope your Paris trip went well despite the rain.

Thanks for all the info guys.

My mam was really delighted that i found her dads family. (thanks to it being online). She had always thougth prices row or marrowbone lane was where they came from. So close for so long trying to find them, and they were just around the corner.

Just another quick question, Anne, when you mentioned that your family was involved in a carriage business, did they ever put on the census returns "car owner"? As a ggm of mine put car owner on her census return for 1901? And i was wondering if it was one and the same.

cheers for all the help

Just to jump in on this thread to say that my gr gr grandparents lived at 64 Cork Street from 1883-1905.  This was on the south side of street at end adjoining the Coombe and all this side disappeared with road widening some years ago so sadly the place would be unrecognisable today save for some buildings on the north side.

Trish, could you post section of map for west end of Cork street?

Thanks,  Anne

No, cabs and cars were different.  A cab was a two/four wheeled carriage which could accommodate luggage as well as passengers.  There were no two wheeled Hansom cabs in Dublin as far as I know.  A car was a vehicle with no roof and two seats where the passengers sat back to back facing outwards - like tourist jaunting cars - but there was little or no room for luggage.  Must have been fun going around corners! My ancestors had both cabs and cars.

Trish, could you post section of map for west end of Cork street?

If you'd like a higher quality image covering a slightly larger area, PM me your email - it's about 1.2MB of a file.
I've resized and cropped this to post here.

Hi Lorna

I remembered coming across your refereces to the Bond Street/Robert Street /prices row area of Dublin, where my ancestors lived too, some time ago so thought of you today when I  found (on irishgenealogy.ie) a record of a Martha Peel marrying a Mr Seberry, one of them with an address in Bond Street. The Seberrys remained friendly with my ancestors for generations so the Bond Street address  back in the 19th century perhaps explains the origin of the friendship.  This Mrs Martha Seberry ended up living with her single daughters as neighbours of my grandparents on the South Circular Road in Dublin  (the Seberrys lived in what is now Number 600 South Circular Road) until her death in approx the 1950s  I'm not sure if any of the Seberrys had children - perhaps the line died out.  One of Mrs Seberry's sons was a cooper in Arthur Guinness and sons and I suspect  Mr Seberry Snr was too

So another link for your tree
