I appreciate that I don't have much information to go on. My grandfather's sister was Edith Emma Marsh, born in Kent, England in 1886. She married Frederick Styles also born in Kent. She was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Winnipeg. She died on 15th January 1926.
I would like to know when they arrived in Canada, what family they had.
Can anyone help please. Maggie.

Was she married when she came to Canada?
You can check for those names on www.findmypast.com for people leaving U.K. (search which shows possibilites is free but there is a fee to view details).
She's not on Immigration Records 1925-1935 on Canadian National Archives site so probably came to Canada before 1925.
Have you tried looking on 1911 and 1901 census? www.automatedgenealogy.com
-
Names are correct? I can see a Walter Frederick C. Styles m. possibly Ellen Maud Marsh in 1907, Eastry district, and two children in Eastry district - Thomas 1913, Norman 1920. (Maybe other siblings?)
http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php - at the moment, the MB death index doesn't seem to be working (sometimes it does this - check by putting in 'Smith' as surname and if you get no hits then you know there's a problem with it), but when it's up again you might be able to find other relatives.
http://www.elmwoodfriends.ca/contact.htm - or contact the cemetery to see if they can tell you who is buried with her.

Thank you for both replies. Have found Edith and Fred Styles sailing from Liverpool to Halifax 1912. Seems a positive find.
Have also tried Manitoba Stats site but no results shown, will try again.
Ellen Maud Marsh was Edith Emma's sister and they married two brothers, Walter and Frederick George E Styles. I've found Ellen's marriage but not Edith's. I'm pretty sure that Norman was Ellen's son, don't know about Thomas.
I do know that there was probably a daughter called Doris, could have been born in Canada, as I haven't found her so far on Freebmd site. I do have someone who could tell me about the family, a nephew of Edith's but he is very frail and is unable to help.
Will also contact Friends of Elmwood cemetery.
Thanks again, Maggie.

http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=1027391 - interesting mention of a Fred and Doris Styles who lived in Winnipeg at some point!
Also in same book:
http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=1027249 - mentions an Edith Styles.
http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=1027256 - another mention of 'Mrs Edith Styles'
This makes it sound like she returned to England at some point after her friend's marriage, and possibly the 1912 entry you found is not the first time they went to Canada, but the return journey.
http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=2879877
- in a different book, mention of a Fred Styles and daughter Doris, from Winnipeg.
On findmypast interestingly there is a Fred Styles (55) and Doris (25), going Glasgow-Montreal in 1938. This may be them returning home after a visit to family?
-
Thanks for your message. I would like to think that the Styles mentioned in the books are the ones from my family.
The age of Fred in 1938 certainly fits in, he was born 1883. Of course Edith had been dead some years. I do know that over the years members of the Styles family came over regularly.
Will keep looking! Maggie.

Contacted "Friends of Elmwood Cemetery", they confirmed plot for Edith Emma's grave. Also 2 burials, Frederick Styles 1959, Frederick Styles 1982.

In 1925, Henderson directory... Frederick G. Styles was yard foreman at Thos. Jackson & Son... h. 930 Wall
In the Manitoba Free Press... Jan. 18th 1926 page 15 all I found was a death notice:
On Jan. 15 at the family residence
Edith Emma aged 40 years, beloved with of F.G. Styles
930 Wall St. Funeral will take place at 3:30 from the Clark-
Leatherdale Funeral Home to Elmwood Cemetery...
I also tried many issues befor & after wards but had no luck...
The Tribune had almost identical entry except fully named Frederick George Styles...sorry that there weren't children listed or if I missed something...as it is pretty tough in those days when obits ran just wherever on any page...
Also have been noting that some women didn't always get a full obit ....Perhaps if we can find a full date of death for Frederick...I can try then
J.J.

Thanks J.J for finding that information for me. I assumed from the dates from Elmwood Cemetery that the earlier one was probably Edith Emma's husband, the later one a son.
I regret now that I took little notice when I was told about visits of the family to the UK. I think that a Doris Styles was probably still alive about 3 years ago, but whether she was a daughter or daughter in law of Emma I don't know
Thank you again, regards Finnisfinder.
-
Yes, of course, from jorose's answer above. I should have looked for them under directories...can do next time! From the info she found for you, sounds as though she was daughter in law.
-
Is this a shot in the dark? J.J. do you have an interest in a family from Kent whose surname begins with a G?
-
Gosh I don't think so ...but I was helping a lady find some rellies from Kent many years back... But then my memory is ?? Why, did you run into another J.J. ?? ;D
-
Thought it would have been too much of a coincidence!
Regards Finnisfinder.

Have just come across this post whilst looking for Styles relations. The Marsh sisters married Frederick and Walter Styles who were younger brothers of my Great Grandfather Henry William James Styles. Frederick was born in 1882 and Walter (who was known as Um!) in 1883. Frederick and his wife went to live in Canada. My mother, who died a few months ago, talked about them and gave me a lot of the Styles family history. She said that Walter (Um) had 2 sons, Norman and Walter, that she knew of. She also said that Frederick married a Marsh sister and went to Canada with a set of tools and £10 and gradually worked his way up to be managing director of a coal/lumber business. She thought his wife died young in Winnipeg. They had a daughter called Dorothy and a son who had 2 children. I have a photo of Frederick and his son and daughter and on the back Mum has written that Frederick and Dolly came to England to visit family in 1938. There is another photo with Fred and Mum's grandfather during that visit. Also have a photo of Walter and his wife.
If you would like to get in touch I can send copies.

What a surprise! I didn't know that Walter and Frederick had another brother. I believe that Walter stayed in Sandwich, Kent area. He died in 1953 in the Thanet Reg area.
Edith, Fred's wife was only 40 when she died. I know that one of the cousins, a nephew of Edith and Ellen has kept in touch with Dolly.I do remember him telling me that she had visited, but don't know when that was.
It would be great to have a copy of the photos. I can't leave an e mail address on here, got to work out how to post a message so I can give it to you. It's a long time since I've done one.
Did your gt grandfather live in the Sandwich area?
Maggie.
