I am looking for the parents of my grandfather on my fathers side. I have always had problems with this side of the family as they moved all over the country.
My grandfather was Frederick Tanner b 07.04.03 and died in the 1970,s and he married Emma Turton 29.09.?? as you can see the information on the Tanner side has always been absent. Emmas mothers maiden name was Thackeray.
Frederick had brothers, Charlie, Harold who married Rita from Shirecliffe, Sidney and maybe a Walter. My uncle was born in 1926 in Balm Green Sheffield. But nothing is known any further back. Except that my great grandfather used to be a fireman in Sheffield.

Do you have Frederick and Emma's marriage cert. showing their fathers?
Possible marriage for Emma's parents?
George Henry Turton Sept 1898 Sheffield Vol 9c Page 829
Brides - Elizabeth Thackery or Sarah Emma Hill

Theres also a birth registration in Sheffield Dec 1904 Vol 9c Page 521 for an Emma Turton, which could be correct, as she was born 29/09/?, so would most probably have been registered in the Oct/Nov/Dec quarter.

I dont have the cert as it was lost in a trunk whilst relatives moved abroad, but Elizabeth does seem to be a possable. Fred was born in 1903 so that birth looks quite likely :)
Thank you CatOne you are pointing me in the right direction :)

Do you have an approximate date for Frederick and Emma's marriage? Then you could look through the records to get hold of that again. (It might mean that you'd have to go through several quarters, but if you can narrow it down it might not be too bad). Can you make a guess based on your father's birthday, or the birthdays of his siblings?
Also, do you know where your grandfather was in the order of children? Looking in the FreeBMD births I found the following Tanners in Eccleshall Bierlow, which is in the vicinity of Sheffield :-
Charles 4th Quarter 1895 Vol 9c page 401
Walter 1st Quarter 1900 Vol 9c page 441
Frederick 2nd Quarter 1903 Vol 9c page 481
Harold 2nd Quarter 1906 Vol 9c page 436
There were others as well, but they were not names that you'd listed.
On the offchance that this is your family, Charles and Harold were with their parents Frederick and Emily in the 1901 census. Frederick was listed as 29 year turncock (waterworks) from Birmingham (not a fireman unfortunately), and Emily was 28 from Middlesborough.

Just some thoughts! Good luck

:D Great I had a feeling that they came from Birmingham but couldnt prove it. Unfortunately I know nothing about this side of the family.
I did find on a scrap of paper that Walter worked at the waterworks so it looks like we are on the right tracks. It also said that one of the Turtons had a pub on or near London Rd Sheffield. It also said Walter lived with G-Grandma near Ecclesall rd area until she died and then he moved to Scotland.
As for Fred & Emmas marriage my uncle is the oldest ,Eric, being born in 1926.
I have been to the fire museum and couldn't see his name on any of the listings.
Thank you both for all this info ;)

Hi again Hugh

Going back to the picture above

The listings for Rockingham st have William Frost as chief officer (at the front of the photo looking proud stripes on his arm.)Frederick William Hadwick/Tom Breaks as Superintendant (looks like the bloke at the back also with stripes.) Might be possable then.
