I am trying to get more information on my ancestor George Fielding b1857 Barton Regis Bristol
All i know is that he went to Colston School and was a wine trader in Bristol presumably did quite well as he lived in Clifton
How can i find out more about him , more about his business and where and when he died
Family rumour has it he was involved with Harveys of Bristol and owned part of the company but i doubt this

Do you require the census for him?
1881 occupation Commercial trveller (Wine trade)
1891 married with children occ Wine merchant
1901 as 1891
I can give you full census if you require them

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat :)
Have you found him on censuses? I can also help with that if you haven't and don't have access yourself but some have been transcribed here
http://www.freecen.org.uk/
What about looking in directories? Try
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/
If you are looking for a marriage or death try looking on
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
If his death was later than about 1910 it is a question of trawling through the complete BMD images you can do this free at (just need to register not subscribe)
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/default.aspx?
Hope that helps a bit

Thanks all helpful
I have the census info but thats about all , i'll try the directories , i'd like to know what his business was called , where it was based etc.
His name appears in newspapers suggesting he was a pillar of the community and involed in charitable orginisations etc but its all very sketchy.

I started by looking at the 1881 census. He was already living in Clifton then as his parents had a lodging house there. His father Henry was from Warminster in Wiltshire, whereas his mother Eliza was shown as a local lass, being born in Clifton herself. The family had two domestic servants and George had a younger brother Arthur.
He was shown as a Commercial Traveller in the Wine Industry, so it's possible that he worked his way up from that.
If I were you, I would try to find him in the full run of Censuses returns from 1861 onwards to get a feeling for the family's fortunes. You could also look to see when his father died and see if there was a will, which would be another way of getting a feeling for the family's social situation.
Kind regards
Philip Candy

His mother was Matilda Neighbour from Slough , his father Henry and Matilda met when both in service , Matilda died and Henry remarried Eliza Braun
Henry was a butler for a bristol trader , quite how he went from being in service to a lodging house keeper in a very desirable area of Clifton we dont quite know.
George went to Colston School and remarkably was in the same class as my wifes g g g grandfather amazing co-incidence

Do you have henry Fielding in 1861?
Matilda is running the lodging house and has sons herbert and george -but henry is not at home
matilda had no lodgers at the time -next door was another lodging house anfd further down the road was a hotel

I have the date of Henry's death as 1883 so he was still alive and married in 1861 no idea where he was i dont think i could find a census entry for him either
