Thanks Ecneps, that was quick, I've found it, No4 North St. Anyone know where the pub's name came from or its history?

Welcome to Roots chat Bilkent
In 1838 in White's Directory its address is Cage Lane does anyone know if Cage lane adjoins North Street?

I can't see a Cage Lane in Strood - perhaps it was just renamed North Street.

I did wonder if it was on a corner has anyone seen it on a map of Strood? Strange name Google doesn't seem to mention who the three gardeners were

I think I saw the pub list you were looking at Trees, it may be wrong, there was a "Cage Lane" listed there but that was in Chatham.

I found it at this link listed toward the bottom of the page under Victualers
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mrawson/dir2.html
which was a directory for Strood
It is quite puzzling

Congratulations, brilliant piece of detective work "Trees" and you did it without taking any DNA tests!! There are 12 other premises in Cage Lane on the same list so it must have been a busy place back in 1838.

Thanks for the info' Deb I do have a photo of the pub from way back, there's was a road to the right of the pub then, that may have been Cage Lane, now called Friary Place, Google maps show the road now as a car park.
I can't find Henry Harrison on my family tree, must be a different family, thanks anyway.
Bill.

The pub is now closed and boarded up probably prior to demolition or sale

for a number of years it did not have a very good name

I pass it nearly every day on the way to work

I used to work opposite in the old Safeways store and walked past the pub many many times,
yes it was a little run down, used to have its regular customers thou..

Now moved across the road to Morrisons and don't have much call to go to the hight street anymore,
but hopefully the new Netto/Wilkinson will put paid to that soon...

Hello Bill,
I saw your post and then stumbled upon this. It may have been created by yourself, but if not and you have not seen it before, it will be a gem. :)

Hi gillsgb, thanks for the memory, I sent the top two photographs to this website some years ago, Bill Harrison and his wife Evelyn were my uncle and aunt, sad to see the old pub derelict although it did have a bit of a reputation back in it's heyday. ;)

It's just very sad to pass the building now. Strood has so few old buildings left, especially since the council destroyed the Aveling and Porter building  :(
