Can anyone please help me with my SIMMONS family dead end?
My ancestor William SIMMONS was born in June 1853, in the registration district of Croydon. At the time, his parents were living in Aspreys Yard, Upper Mitcham. They were Stephen SIMMONS, a labourer, and Hannah Simmons, formerly WATERER.
Unfortunately, this is all I know. I have been unable to locate the marriage of Stephen and Hannah, or any siblings of William's. I think he might already have been living away from home by 1871, as there are a couple of possibilities for him in other areas in the census of that year.
Can anyone locate the Simmons family in the 1861 Surrey census, when William would have been aged seven?
Or what about the 1851 census, two years prior to William's birth? Were Stephen Simmons and Hannah Waterer already married and living at Aspreys Yard, Upper Mitcham, by then?
Of course, any sign of Stephen's family, or Hannah's, prior to their marriage would be wonderful!
This is my first look-up request, but these boards are a terrific idea!
Thanks in advance, and Happy New Year to you all.

Stephen,
I too posted my 1st post and thought I'd check out who else is looking for Simmons.
Whilst I am not related I did take details of the 1851 census of Croydon for Simmons.
Sorry I had poor notes back then but here goes...
In Croydon I have
Abode - 'Post Office Yo"
Name (Simmons) Age Mar. Rel Occu Where Born
Stephen 33 M H Lab Rodmils, Sussex
Hannah 25 M W Ashted,Surrey
Ellen 2 D Croydon, Surrey
Alfred 3mths S Croydon, Surrey
I only have written next to the address the number 163 - I assume this is the page number of the district. Further in my notes I have the notation "Did up enumeration district 49" So I beleive this is probably somewhere in the 40's.
Also those Simmons born in from what appears to be Rodmils are:
Abode - '37 Church St, Gum Public House"
Name (Simmons) Age Mar. Rel Occu Where Born
Jane 20 se Servant Roomile, Sussex
This has page no. 101 next to it and is in an earlier district.
Abode - 'Myrtle St West"
Name (Simmons) Age Mar. Rel Occu Where Born
Charles 34 M H see below Rodmile, Sussex
Joanna 39 M W see below left blank
Anne 2 D Croydon, Surrey
Charles listed as a Wood Crokets (Lab). Joanna as a School Mistress.
The page number (161) appears just before my note of "Did up to enumeration district 49".
Will check a couple of my databases and will revert shortly.

Wow, that's an absolute treasure trove of Simmons's! Thanks a lot for your trouble, Keen.
Stephen and Hannah certainly look like my ancestor's parents. And if the Stephen Simmonds in Piddinghoe is the same one, that seems to give me four siblings to work on.
A great breakthrough for me - thank you.
All the best,
Steve

i have been tracing the name SIMMONS/SIMMONDS for some years now in sussex and i think you are both VERY, VERY distantly related to me.
give me a couple of days and I will try and help you both.
I can trace the Simmons - or however you wish to spell it to the marriage of Richard Symond and Elizabeth Paul in Glynde, ssx 1732
