Hello
I've come on to this site having heard it recommended on a BBC Radio 4 program.
I started researching my family tree last year while recovering from illness.
I'm drawing a blank after my maternal grandmother on that side of my family. She was adopted and it is unlikely that her mother was married when she was born.
This is what I have been able to establish:
My grandmother was born 24 November 1922 and named Joan Powell; her birth certificate states that she was born at 1 Golden Street, Deal, Kent
Her mother's name is given as Beatrice Alice Powell
My grandmother's recollection was that her mother worked as a waitress and was very young.
I've discovered that the Deal census returns have been destroyed and so have not been able to take this line back beyond 1922.
I'd be grateful for any assistance anyone can give - including just advice on where I can start looking next.
Many thanks
Alison Graham-Wells

Hi
I have had a look for a birth for Beatrice Alice Powell on freebmd but there are too many possible entries - and that's only on the partially transcribed websites. There may be more on the full GRO index
Births September quarter 1897
Powell Beatrice Alice Fulham 1a 220a
Powell Beatrice Alice Forden 11b 190
Births September quarter 1898
POWELL Beatrice Alice Marylebone 1a 605
Births Dec quarter 1904
POWELL Beatrice Alice Brentford 3a 73
Births Dec quarter 1905
Powell Beatrice Alice Stourbridge 6c 191
Beatrice may have only been in Kent to have her baby
To be honest - with only her name to go on it could be very difficult to link to the correct one
Do you know if she married after having Joan?

Hello Alison, welcome to Rootschat :)
I've one line from Deal, & it's a real pain! Luckily I had a marriage cert from 1912 so was able to jump back to the 1881 Census, but coming forward is hopeless, as the 1901 Census is missing, & my lot don't even appear on the 1891!
I can only agree with Carole, without more to go on, it's going to be very difficult for you.

Hi Alison
I've just looked at the only records I have for Deal, for Hamilton Rd Cemetery, which at least confirms there were POWELLs in Deal, a few living in the area of Golden St.
Perhaps, as a unmarried women, she came to Deal to stay with a relative to give birth, but whether we can discover where she came from & who this possible relative was, remains to be seen!

Are there any directories for 1922 for Deal which could perhaps tell us who was living at that address

We need Bill749 for this. He will know what's available in Deal library.

Thank you Carol and Betty.
Carol - I had found various "Beatrice Alice Powell" in the BMD indices through Ancestry.co.uk last year but as you have noted there are quite a few of them - and and as my grandmother was put up for adoption and ended up with a family in the Walthamstow area I had been quite hopeful about the London Beatrices, thus far nothing.
Betty - knowing that there were Powells in Deal especially in the Golden Street area is very helpful (it makes me feel better for some reason - I think I had visions of a waif of a girl alone having this baby).
Thanks

There are some local street directories at Deal library covering this time period see: http://www.familia.org.uk/services/england/kent_dover.html
See http://kent.gov.uk/LibrariespublicUI/ for up-to-date addresses/contact details etc..
