Post by: july on Friday 30 November 07 21:40 GMT (UK)
Does anyone know if the pub in dacre opposite st andrews church was called the Joiners arms and that there was cottages named Joiners row.
I have been to look and that seems to be the only pub there and the landlord there dident know.
Kind Regards

If you find Dacre at www.old-maps.co.uk , the 1867 map shows only one pub, the Horse and Farrier, quite near to the church.

The 1897 Kellys Directory for Cumberland has a Joiners Arms at Newbiggin, licensee John HORNSBY ... the only pub at Dacre appears to have been the Horse and Farrier.

You can search for yourself at www.historicaldirectories.org

What's the name of the person you've got (or the page reference).

The Horse and Farrier has Dinah NOBLE, RG11/5143/96/22

Then there's Edward ATKINSON 22 in the Kings Arms in Stainton/Dacre  RG11/5143/88/6

Well, although he was an AgLab in 1881, he was living in Newbiggin - the place where the Joiners Arms was. :)

The Joiners Arms was eight households before the NICHOL family in the 1881 census.
Head of household was
Ann BELL (wid) 46 Innkeeper, Penrith

OK, I've now found your man in 1891, next door to Joiners Arms.

At the top of the page it says

Civil Parish: Dacre ................... Village of Newbiggin ........etc. so that's where he was. :)
